The Role of FGF23 and Asymmetric Dimethylarginine (ADMA) in Chronic Kidney Disease

Metabolic DiseasesChronic Kidney Disease

In chronic kidney disease calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) metabolism disorders are very common and also they are one of the leading causes of morbidity in these population. FGF23 is a novel factor that contributes Ca-P disorders. It has been hypothesized that FGF 23 increase is mediated by asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA). The aim of the study is to evaluate this hypothesis.

A Research Proposal to Set up an Integrated National Data Bank and Monitoring System and to Establish...

Chronic Kidney Disease

This project expects the integrated database of terminally renal ill patients combines clinical and files of Health Insurance and renal medical society database. It will provide valuable actual evidence data to quality monitoring of dialysis treatment and related academic research. Besides, using the cohort study of chronic renal disease --「epidemiologic research of chronic renal disease」, we can trace the patient continually and analysis different risk factors of chronic renal disease in Taiwan. Taken together, the results of this project --1.1「Integrate the current database of renal disease and establishment of national monitor system」and 1.2「Epidemiologic study in chronic renal disease」-- will provide the basic rules of prevention and treatment, basic research and clinic application in chronic renal disease.

ProtocoL for GFR Measurement Using Iohexol (SCOPE-PLUS) - A Substudy of the SCOPE Study

Chronic Kidney Diseases

SCOPE-PLUS is an optional substudy of the observational SCOPE Study (Screening for Chronic Kidney Disease among Older People across Europe, NCT02691546). The objective of the SCOPE-PLUS study is to derive new equations based on innovative and novel biomarkers of CKD function and compare its accuracy to measure GFR in the population older than 75 years.

Prediction of Expected Length of Hospital Stay Using Machine Learning

InfectionHeart Failure7 more

This is a retrospective observational study drawing on data from the Brigham and Women's Home Hospital database. Sociodemographic and clinic data from a training cohort were used to train a machine learning algorithm to predict length of stay throughout a patient's admission. This algorithm was then validated in a validation cohort.

A Study of Wrist Worn Accelerometers in End-Stage Renal Disease

Chronic Kidney DiseasesEnd Stage Renal Disease on Dialysis1 more

The kidneys are important at getting rid of toxins and excess water from the body. If they fail, then toxins and excess water builds up within the body. Kidney failure is treated by either giving patients a new kidney (a transplant) or by removing the toxins and fluid from the body by the process of dialysis. The investigators' aim is to personalise the care given to patients with kidney failure, and as such, they have started measuring the fitness of patients with kidney failure, who either already require dialysis or may need dialysis in the near future. This is currently done in a number of ways including measuring how strong their grip is, assessing their walking speed and asking questions about how difficult they find certain activities. In the future, the investigators think that this will allow targeted treatments to help improve their fitness and potentially identify any problems earlier. Current approaches to measuring activity and fitness have limitations and in particular may over- or underestimate the level of the physical activity. To over come these limitations, participants will be asked to wear an activity tracker (called an accelerometer) on for a week. Readings from the accelerometer will be compared against the other markers of fitness and activity to see if they are comparable. It will also be noted whether patients are prepared to wear the device for 7 days (compliance).

Metabolic Changes in Patients With Chronic Cardiopulmonary Disease

Heart FailureChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease2 more

This study aims to evaluate prevalence of sarcopenia and cachexia in patients with chronic cardiopulmonary disease. The investigators will also investigate metabolic disorders like glucose metabolism, presence of metabolic syndrome, body composition and histological changes in skeletal muscle and body fat. Finally, patients will be followed for clinical endpoints.

Duration of Protection From Pneumonia After Pneumococcal Vaccination in Hemodialysis Patients

CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) Stage 5DPneumonia

The investigators compare two strata of vaccinated patients: those recently vaccinated and those vaccinated more than two years ago. The primary objective is to compare pneumonia rates between the groups. As exploratory objectives, the investigators will describe the anti-pneumococcal antibody titers in hemodialysis patients as a function of time since vaccination, and determine factors influencing antibody kinetics. Further exploratory objectives investigate the relationship between antibody titers and the incidence of pneumonia in hemodialysis patients and extrapolate a possible cut-off for protection from pneumonia.

Creation and Validation of a Questionnaire to Measure the Feelings of a Chronic Renal Insufficiency...

Chronic Renal Insufficiency

Chronic Hemodialysis is a treatment for kidney failure. It involves the construction of three treatment sessions per week extrarenal lasting 4 hours each. This treatment is necessary but it has an impact on the quality of life of patients. The investigators believe that to improve the overall quality of life in hemodialysis patients, the quality of each hemodialysis session must be improved. The quality criterion is not only medical, it must also take into account the patient's perception about the course of its meeting : that's what we call quality of experience of the dialysis session. Our daily healthcare practice shows that each hemodialysis session is experienced differently by the patient according to different factors : physical, psychological, relational, technical, temporal. The quality of the experience of a hemodialysis session could be positively influenced by the use of supplements occupational assets or liabilities, for improving patient satisfaction or by enhancing its relationship with the staff. Indeed, a preliminary study ( in the nephrology unit of our establishment in January 2012) of 8 patients undergoing active occupational educational activity during hemodialysis, showed that the experience of the hemodialysis session was potentially improvable (experienced patients improved, reduced cramps ... ). However, to assess the impact of such measures on the lives of the dialysis session and the quality of life in general, the investigators need to measure the quality of living of a dialysis session. There is not, at present, specific tool to measure the quality of the experience of a hemodialysis session. This tool would measure the impact of a caregiver support occupational during dialysis sessions. The main objective of this study is to create and validate an instrument to measure the quality of living of a hemodialysis of chronic renal insufficiency subject.

Parathyroid Hyperplasia in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic Kidney Diseases

Secondary hyperparathyroidism is an important complication in patient with chronic kidney disease . It is associated with bone complication and an increase in cardiovascular mortality The parathyroid hormone rises in these patients as consequence of low concentration of vitamin D3 ,reduction in quantities of serum calcium, phosphorus retention and reduction of vitamin D receptors sensitive to calcium.
