Healthy Adults

(1) Maximum respiratory pressure (MRP)1) Maximum inspiratory pressure (maximum intake pressure) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) Digital spirometer (Pony FX, COSMED Inc., Italy) are used to measure the micro-paste in a seated position. MIP is based on the pressure maintained for at least 1 second, inhaling or exhaling with maximum effort in the maximum exhalation state (=residual volume) and the maximum exhalation state (=total lung capacity). The maximum positive pressure value of the MEP and the minimum sound pressure value of the MIP are selected among the three or more attempts. 2) Using the MVV (maximum volitional ventilation) Digital spirometer (Pony FX, COSMED Inc., Italy) machine, repeat breathing deeply and quickly for 12 seconds while wearing a nose plug, and multiply it by 5 to obtain the L/min value. (2) Measure the values of the Pneumatic ventilation. · FVC (forced vital capacity): Total expiratory volume of one of the maximum effort gases · FEV1 (forced expiratory volume 1, effort expiratory volume): Ejected expiratory volume of the first second of the maximum effort expiratory volume (FEV1/FVC): FVC ratio, percentage of FVCs, and extraction of the FVC (excessive flow). Central sleep apnea (CSA) is a common condition and its treatment remains elusive. The focus of this proposal is to identify the role of the physiologic path involving cortical arousals in CSA by decreasing arousal frequency using the pharmacological agent zolpidem. The goal is to identify the acute effects of administering zolpidem on sleep and respiratory outcomes, and subsequently, its effect on the severity of CSA and propensity to develop CSA. This study will shed light on the mechanisms underlying CSA that involve cortical arousals and will guide future therapeutic interventions for CSA.

Among aesthetic or cosmetic surgeries, breast augmentation was the most frequently performed and the endoscopic transaxillary approach has become the preferred incision for Asian women. As breast augmentation must be performed under general anesthesia accompanied by its effects and potential complications, types of general anesthesia may affect the quality of recovery. Currently, the two most common techniques of general anesthesia are inhalation anesthesia (IH) and total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). The effects of these types of general anesthesia on the quality of recovery have been investigated for numerous surgical procedures. However, no prior studies have analyzed different types of anesthesia used for performing transaxillary endoscopic breast augmentation. This prospective, parallel, randomized controlled study will evaluate the effects of inhalation anesthesia vs. total intravenous anesthesia on the quality of recovery in patients undergoing transaxillary endoscopic breast augmentation.
