Inspiratory muscle weakness, limited functional exercise capacity and worse quality of life have been shown in patients with exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Recommendations from clinical practice guideline state that promoting pulmonary rehabilitation after exacerbation can improve the conditions above. Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) has been proven to enhance inspiratory muscle strength and endurance in patient with stable COPD. However, there is less research on whether IMT in addition to pulmonary rehabilitation after exacerbation can benefit inspiratory muscle function, functional exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with COPD. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of IMT in addition to pulmonary rehabilitation on respiratory muscle function, functional exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Interactive Effects of Mindfulness and Slow-paced Breathing

The purpose of this study is to better understand specific stress-management practices on mood, sleep, and physiology. Participants will be assigned to one of three interventions (they all active interventions - none are a "wait-list"). Each intervention asks participants to engage in a daily practice of 20 minutes per day for 8 weeks. Questionnaires and measures of heart rate and blood pressure will be collected at the start and end of the 8 weeks, including a virtual laboratory visit.

Aim and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of breathing exercises and virtual reality applications during pregnancy and labor on labor pain, duration, and birth satisfaction. Background: Conducted studies show that practices such as virtual reality have positive effects on labor. However, there is no study that compares the effects of breathing exercises with virtual reality applications on labor. Design: A randomized controlled experiment was conducted by the CONSORT guidelines. Methods: The study included 114 pregnant women (Breathing Exercise Group:39, Virtual Reality Group:37, Control Group:38). The research was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, for the experimental groups at the 36th-39th weeks of pregnancy, a 10-minute breathing exercise was performed 3 times a week using virtual reality glasses and a breathing exercise device. In the second stage of the study (when the cervical dilatation was 4 cm), the breathing exercise group was made breathing exercises again. The virtual reality group watched a 10-minute video with virtual reality glasses. Once the virtual reality glasses were removed from experimental groups Visual Analogue Scale was applied. Birth satisfaction was evaluated with the Birth Satisfaction Scale within the first 4 hours after the delivery was completed.

Athletes using asthma medications called β2-agonists win a disproportionately high number of medals at Olympic Games. Due to a large variety in the genes that affect how individuals respond to β2-agonists, the investigators will look at variations in the genetic response to these medications by dividing athletes into high-responders and low-responders. The investigators will then compare athletic performance after the inhalation of β2-agonists to placebo. Furthermore, the investigators will analyze the effect of β2-agonists on breathing mechanics. Due to differences in their anatomy females may decrease the energy needed for breathing during high-intensity exercise to a greater extent compared to male athletes after the inhalation of β2-agonists.

Our preliminary data show for in cognitively-normal elderly, that Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is associated with the increase of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) phosphorylated-Tau (P-Tau) and total-Tau (T-Tau), decreases in medial temporal lobe glucose uptake (FDG-PET) and volume (MRI) and progressive memory decline, all of which have been shown to be useful in predicting future dementia in older adults. These findings raise the question as to whether Alzheimer's disease (AD) tissue damage causes SDB in the elderly, or alternatively, if SDB acts as a risk factor for AD neurodegeneration. In the proposed study, we will investigate these mechanistic hypotheses in cognitively normal elderly by examining the longitudinal associations between SDB and cognitive decline, novel MR neuroimaging and CSF biomarkers for neurodegeneration; while our secondary goal is to launch a pilot treatment study to aid in interpreting the mechanistic hypotheses and to examine the effects of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on cognitive decline and neurodegeneration.
