Effects of Non-invasive Neuromodulation on Food Desire, Chewing Pattern, Executive Functions and...

CravingMastication Disorder5 more

From the change in self-regulation, memory is inhibited, allowing individuals to suppress or ignore unwanted or outdated associations and thus help to filter information relevant to dietary goals from irrelevant information. Provoking changes in neuroplasticity and cortical excitability contribute to the regulation of neural activity. Both could be modified by applying direct electrical current to the sensorimotor cortex, with polarity/current-dependent results, and their effect would last for hours after the end of stimulation. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), translated into Portuguese as Estimulação Transcraniana por Corrente Contínua (ETCC) is a neuromodulating tool in which a low-intensity electrical current is applied to the scalp to modulate neuronal activity.

Scalp Application of LED Therapy to Improve Thinking and Memory in Veterans With Gulf War Illness...

Gulf War Veterans IllnessNeurobehavioral Manifestations1 more

The purpose of this study is to learn if an experimental treatment can help thinking ability, and memory in Veterans with Gulf War Veterans Illnesses (GWVI). The experimental treatment uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs), that are applied outside the skull, to the head using a helmet that is lined with near-infrared diodes. LEDs are also placed in the nostrils (one red diode; and one near-infrared diode), near-infrared photons to the olfactory bulbs located on the orbito-frontal cortex. There are connections between the olfactory bulbs and the hippocampus. A treatment takes about 30 minutes. The participants receive a series of LED treatments which take place as outpatient visits at the VA Boston Healthcare System, Jamaica Plain Campus. The FDA considers the helmet LED device used here, to be a non-significant risk device. The diodes in the device placed in the nose are low-risk devices, within the FDA Category of General Wellness. In addition, a single, 90 mW near-infrared (NIR) LED was placed on each ear. The LEDs do not produce heat.

AIT-082 Phase 1B Study

Memory Disorders

AIT-082 is a novel small molecule that crosses the blood-brain barrier to enhance nerve function by increasing levels of neurotrophic growth factors and encouraging nerve sprouting in the brain. Preclinical studies in animals have shown that AIT-082 improves memory in aged animals and in animals with neurological deficits. This study was a double-blind placebo-controlled safety study that was designed to study whether AIT-082 may delay age-related mental decline. Eight healthy older volunteers at two clinical sites were given single, weekly, rising doses of AIT-082 or placebo for 5 weeks; were tested for side effects and absorption; and underwent a battery of neuropsychological memory tests, including word and number recall tests.

Sevoflurane General Anesthetic and Spatial Memory in Humans

Spatial Memory Disorder

The goal of this observational study is to learn about the effect of general anesthetic on spatial memory in adults who will undergo to an elective surgery. The main question it aims to answer is: • A surgical event under general anesthesia with sevoflurane transiently impairs spatial memory in humans and induces an increase in inflammatory cytokines. Participants will perform a virtual maze test and plasma samples will be taken before and after surgery.

Cognitive Training for Memory Deficits Associated With Electroconvulsive Therapy

Memory DeficitsElectroconvulsive Therapy

Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the most effective treatment for people with severe depression, patients may experience a significant degree of persistent and/or permanent memory problems following ECT. Many patients report the memory problems are the most disturbing and serious side effect of ECT, and that such effects impact their quality of life following treatment and their willingness to consent to further ECT needed to complete a treatment course or to maintain remission. New developments in the field of cognitive remediation have demonstrated the benefits of cognitive training to improve memory performance in various conditions, such as epilepsy. However, these strategies have never been applied to help patients regain memory after ECT. The investigators have designed and piloted a novel cognitive program specifically targeted to the cognitive effects of ECT, based upon a program tailored to people with seizure disorders, a group with memory problems very similar to people who undergo ECT. This Memory Training for ECT (Mem-ECT) is designed to help cognitive functions that may be compromised following ECT remain relatively preserved. In addition, the intervention attempts to help ECT patients quickly regain their general memory skills immediately following ECT. Recent results from our preliminary group of patients who underwent ECT and memory training at New York Presbyterian shows no overall decline in memory function following ECT. On the basis of these promising findings, the investigators propose a more rigorous and larger study to confirm whether this novel memory training program can help alleviate memory problems associated with ECT.

Safety and Efficacy Study of Ladostigil in Mild to Moderate Probable Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's DiseaseDementia2 more

For many, Alzheimer's disease is the number one medical issue facing our aging society. It is a late onset neurodegenerative disease, frequently under diagnosed, that impairs memory and cognitive performance. There are no known treatments that can either prevent or reverse its progression. Consequently, there still remains a need to evaluate treatments which can better stabilize the symptoms of this disease. These symptoms frequently include decreased functional capacity and negative psychological attributes (e,g, depression, anxiety) in association with the memory and cognition deficits. This current study is being done to assess an investigational compound that has been designed to not only improved the cognitive status of affected patients but to also better manage all symptoms. Hence, the ultimate goal is to provide patients with an improved quality of life by slowing the progression of this neurodegenerative disease
