Genes Associated With Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and Retinopathy of Prematurity

Bronchopulmonary DysplasiaRetinopathy of Prematurity2 more

Background: - Some premature babies develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). BPD and ROP are long-term chronic diseases of the lungs and eyes, respectively. BPD is associated with receiving mechanical ventilation to treat respiratory distress syndrome, and causes lung inflammation and scarring. ROP is caused by poor development of blood vessels in the eyes, and may lead to blindness. Because not all premature babies develop BPD or ROP, researchers want to study the genes that could be associated with these diseases. They will look at both premature infants and their parents to see if there is a genetic component to BPD and ROP. Objectives: - To study genes that may be associated with BPD and ROP. Eligibility: Premature babies born with a weight less than or equal to 1,250 grams. Parents of the premature babies. Design: Parents will answer questions about the mother s health and pregnancy. Delivery and medical information will be collected during the baby s hospitalization for the first month after birth. Parents will provide a saliva sample from the inside of the cheek. A saliva sample will also be collected from the baby within 28 days of birth. If the baby needs tracheal aspiration (removal of fluid from the throat), tracheal fluid samples will also be collected. Parents will have followup interviews about their child s health 6 months, 12 months, and yearly for up to 6 years after birth. This is a genetic study only. Treatment will not be provided as part of this study.

Registry for Severe ROP and Treatment on Visual Outcomes

Retinopathy of Prematurity

The purpose of this study is to determine what factors influence the visual outcomes of infants with severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and to monitor the outcomes.

Ultrasound to Detect Evidence for Retinal Detachment in Retinopathy of Prematurity

Retinopathy of Prematurity

Premature infants stand a risk of danger to the layer of the eye that creates sight that, if untreated, can cause severe vision problems, leading to blindness in some cases. This research study will use ultrasound to examine the eye for retinal changes of prematurity.

Benefit of Singing in the Care of Premature Children Undergoing Screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity...

PrematurityEye Fundus

As part of the regular procedure for premature births, premature infants undergo several screening examinations, including an examination of the fundus. This examination seeks to establish whether the infant has retinopathy of prematurity. This disease affects the vessels of the retina of the eye, especially in prematurely born children, and can lead to serious complications such as blindness if it is not treated in time. The purpose of this study is to assess the discomfort caused by the screening in order to improve practices. To do this, the investigators would like to evaluate whether soft auditory stimulation, more precisely a person singing, would improve the children's level of comfort during the examination. To do this, the participating children will be divided into 2 groups: The "Singing" group will receive the usual comfort treatments (placed in a 'nest', pacifier and sugar water) and a trained professional will sing a lullaby or nursery rhyme at the same time control group will receive the usual comfort care (placed in a 'nest', pacifier and sugar water) The child's head and entire body will be filmed, which will allow an evaluator to assess the child's comfort.

Erythropoietin and Early Iron Supplement and Retinopathy of Prematurity

Retinopathy of Prematurity

To evaluate the possibility that erythropoietin with early iron supplementation may induce retinopathy of prematurity or worsen this disease. In addition risk factors for the development of ROP will be checked.

Role of Cord Blood Cytokines and Perinatal Factors in Prediction of Retinopathy of Prematurity

Retinopathy of Prematurity

Cord blood will be taken after birth for evaluation of cytokines level. At age of 4-6 weeks, we will do fundus examination for babies . Retrograde, we will study the perinatal risk factors in subjects found to have retinopathy. Follow up fundus will be done according to results of the first examination. By this study,we will be able later on to predict whom of preterm infants are more prone to develop retinopathy of prematurity.
