To determine the magnitude and rate of bone mass deficits following initiation of glucocorticoid therapy for the treatment of pediatric leukemia, rheumatic conditions and nephrotic syndrome, we propose a 6 year, prospective study in 12 academic, tertiary care centres across Canada. The investigators hypothesize that glucocorticoid-treated children with leukemia, rheumatic conditions and nephrotic syndrome will fail to accrue bone mass at a normal rate, and that deficits in mineral accrual will occur in a glucocorticoid dose- and duration-dependent fashion. We also hypothesize that the fracture incidence will increase with concomitant reductions in bone mass.

We aimed to investigate if adiponectin facilitates diagnosis of ARF by analyzing adiponectin levels in acute and convalescent periods of the acute rheumatic fever and by comparing results with that of healthy control group; also by comparatively examining levels of adiponectin in ARF cases who had different clinical findings at presentation. In addition, we aimed to investigate its role in the pathogenesis of ARF by evaluating correlations with cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 and acute phase reactants.

The trial is a prospective, observational study aiming to identify risk factors for serious COVID-19 infection by evaluating clinical measures and biomarkers of inflammation in patients with inflammatory rheumatic disease hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with control groups.

A retrospective monocentric study with large active files of patients monitored for rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus with as main endpoint the morbimortality of Covid-19 in these patients (number of patients hospitalized in conventional units and/or in intensive care and/or deceased). This study will collect white blood cells or plasma (the liquid part of the blood), or both, from healthy volunteers and from patients with rheumatic or kidney disorders for research purposes. Rheumatic disorders involve abnormalities of the immune system, the body s defense against disease. The immune system consists of white blood cells such as lymphocytes and monocytes, which produce substances such as antibodies and cytokines. White cells and plasma will be collected through a procedure called apheresis (described below). Healthy volunteers and patients with confirmed or suspected rheumatic or kidney disease who are 18 years of age or older may be eligible for this study. Patients must be participating in a current protocol of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases or the National Institute of Digestive, Diabetes and Kidney Diseases. All candidates will be screened with a history, physical examination, and blood tests for hepatitis B and C and HIV infection. Women of childbearing age will be tested for pregnancy. Routine blood tests will be done in all volunteers, and in patients where needed. Pregnant women and people who test positive for hepatitis or HIV may not participate. Participants will undergo apheresis to collect lymphocytes, monocytes, or plasma from the blood. For this procedure, a needle is placed in a vein in the arm. Blood flows from the vein through a tube (catheter) into a machine that spins the blood, separating it into its components. The required cells or plasma are extracted, and the rest of the blood, including the red cells and platelets, is returned to the body through the same needle or through a second needle placed in the other arm. Cells collected from volunteers will be used in studies comparing the number and function of similar cells from patients with rheumatic diseases, focusing on the differences in number and function of the cells in health and disease. this observational, cross-sectional, national, comparative study, including RMD patients followed in hospital centres of the FAI²R Rare Diseases Healthcare Pathway network and specialist private practitioners caring for patients suffering from inflammatory rheumatism, systemic autoimmune diseases and auto-inflammatory diseases. The objective of the study is to compare RMD patients with COVID 19 infection (cases) to RMD patients who have not had COVID 19 infection (controls) on their mental health.

Randomized controlled trial including 100 subjects with rheumatic diseases and biological treatment with a 28 point-Disease Activity Score(DAS28)3.2 or less. The subjects will be randomized to either nurse-led clinic or rheumatologist-led clinic. The hypothesis is that there will be no difference in DAS28 between the two groups after 1 year follow-up.

A qualitative study assessing the impact of early narrative medicine practice on Medical Honors Program (MHP) students' attitudes regarding patient-centered interactions, through interviewing patients with chronic or life-limiting illnesses to obtain their illness stories. MHP students will develop a patient narrative for the patients interviewed. These narratives will be edited by the patient, and, with the permission of the patients, may be published as a collection of stories.
