Comparison of Outcomes After Laparoscopic Versus Open Appendectomy in Acute Appendicitis
AppendectomyPain2 moreA comparison study was performed between laparoscopic appendectomy and open appendectomy in acute setting in tertiary hospital to access the outcome of postoperative pain and hospital stay. As the popularity of laparoscopic appendectomy has failed in major tertiary hospital due to huge amount of patient load in which open appendectomy was performed. This study was performed to prove that outcome of laparoscopic appendectomy are far better than open appendectomy and to increase the use of laparoscopic surgery in acute settings

Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) Versus Laparoscopic Appendectomy
AppendicitisThis is a prospective trial of single incision versus standard 3-port laparoscopic appendectomy. The hypothesis is that there may a difference in wound infection rates, operative time, doses of analgesics post-operatively, and patient/parent perception of scars.
Wound Infection Alexis Wound Retractor
AppendicitisThe purpose of this study is to determine whether the incidence of surgical site wound infection will be reduced in open appendectomy patients through the use of the Alexis® wound retractor.
Intravenous Versus Intravenous/Oral Antibiotics for Perforated Appendicitis
Perforated AppendicitisThe objective of this study is to scientifically evaluate two different management strategies for perforated appendicitis. The hypothesis is that early discharge with oral antibiotic therapy may result in a dramatic decrease in medical care expenses for the patient. The primary outcome variable between the two strategies is abscess rate.
Laparoscopic Management of Periappendicular Abscess
AppendicitisAbdominal AbscessAccording to retrospective studies the conservative management of periappendicular abscess is associated with decreased complication and re-operation rate compared with open appendectomy. Large abscesses require percutaneous drainage. Sometimes percutaneous drainage is not possible because of anatomical position of the abscess and surgical treatment is needed. The purpose of this study is evaluate whether laparoscopic appendectomy is suitable for the first-line treatment in patients with periappendicular abscess. The hypothesis of the study is that laparoscopic management of periappendicular abscess is suitable for the first-line treatment and it does not increase time of hospitalization or complication rate compared with conservative management.
Single Incision Versus Conventional Laparoscopic Appendectomy
Acute AppendicitisThis is a randomized prospective study comparing single incision versus conventional laparoscopic appendectomy for management of acute appendicitis.
Emergency Department CT Scanning for Appendicitis
AppendicitisThe purpose of this study is to compare IV contrast only vs. IV and oral contrast Computed Tomography (CT) for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in adult patients in our emergency department. A secondary purpose will be to design a specific CT for appendicitis protocol at our institution at the conclusion of this study.
Comparative Study of Laparoscopic Versus Open Appendectomy in Children
AppendicitisThe study intends to compare the results of two surgical methods to remove the appendix in children with appendicitis. Specifically, up to 500 children over 3 years will be placed in two groups where the only difference in treatment is open or laparoscopic (scope) operation. Each group will be tracked for their baseline characteristics, events during operation and recovery, pain medication requirements, duration of hospital stay, and patient/family satisfaction. The investigators hypothesize that their will be no difference in the parameters measured between the techniques of appendix removal.
