Trying Activity in Kidney Cancer Survivors (TRACKS) Trial
Supervised Physical Activity Plus Exercise CounselingSupervised Physical Activity Plus Behavioural CounselingObjectives: The purpose of this study is to find out if a new program can help kidney cancer survivors (KCS) increase their physical activity (PA) and improve their quality of life (QoL). Methods: Fifty KCS will be recruited from a previous study using the Alberta Cancer Registry. Participants will undergo submaximal exercise testing, a physical function test and measures of height and weight, which will be completed at baseline and the end of the physical activity program (at 12 weeks). Participants will also complete questionnaires on PA and QoL at the baseline, after the supervised portion of the program (at 4 weeks), and at the end of the entire program (at 12 weeks). Following baseline assessments, participants will be randomly assigned to either: (1) supervised physical activity plus traditional exercise counseling or (2) supervised physical activity plus behavioural counseling. Participants will be asked to attend six individual supervised exercise and counseling sessions over a 4-week period with a PA specialist that eventually tapers to a home-based program by the end of the program. Implications: The investigators hope that this PA intervention for KCS is feasible and results in meaningful improvements in health outcomes that can be translated to public health practice.

The Phase 1 study part of this study is to confirm the safety/tolerability and to evaluate the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) in subjects with suspected renal cell carcinoma (RCC) including clear cell renal cell carcinoma. The Phase 2 component of the study is to to evaluate the sensitivity/specificity of using 89Zr-TLX250 PET/CT images to detect RCC and ccRCC in patients with suspected RCC.

Metastatic Renal Cell CancerThis pilot study is an open-label interventional study, prospective, non-comparative, sequential (two stages), national, multicenter study. Patients starting therapy with sunitinib or pazopanib as standard first line treatment for advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma will enter the study in one of the two cohorts (115 patients will be treated by sunitinib and 99 patients will be treated by pazopanib). The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of sunitinib and pazopanib dose individualisation based on therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) and to assess the benefit of this approach in terms of tolerance and efficacy compared with the current empirical method based only on tolerance observation.
Biobehavioral Effects of Emotional Expression in Cancer
Kidney CancerThe proposed study will assess the psychological and physiological benefits of an emotional expression intervention in patients with renal cancer. Patients will be randomly assigned to an emotional expression writing group or to a neutral writing group. This study will also evaluate the extent to which psychosocial factors mediate the intervention program and predict patients' recovery and adjustment to treatment. Potential mediators include level of cognitive processing, social networks/interactions, and sense of coherence and ability to find meaning in the illness experience. Specific objectives of the proposed research are: To evaluate an emotional expression intervention in patients with renal cancer. Researchers will determine the extent to which an emotional expression writing-based intervention enhances adjustment during the first 12 months following diagnosis and treatment. Dimensions of adjustment will be assessed by examining indices of QOL, mental health, and stress (subjective symptoms of distress, perceived stress, and mood). To determine the effects of an emotional expression writing-based intervention on immune function. The immune measures assessed in this study will include both general and autologous tumor-specific immune responses including cytotoxicity to K562 target cells; cytotoxicity to autologous tumor target cells; and functional assessment of type-1 and type-2 cytokines using autologous tumor and polyclonal stimulants.
