Innovative Functional Food Based on Apulian Lens Culinaris for Contrasting Sarcopenia in Dialysis...
HemodialysisSarcopeniaThe objective of the pilot study is to validate the clinical use of a dietary supplement for contrasting sarcopenia in dialysis patients. The study aims at evaluating the effects of a nutritional supplement, consisting of flour from Lens culinaris of Altamura IGP, pea proteins and vitamins (A, B12, D, E) by achieving the following objectives: Reduction of sarcopenia conditions, through improvement of nutritional and anthropometrical levels Decrease of the serum levels of microbiota-derived uremic toxins Reduction of intestinal permeability and inflammatory markers
Physical Fitness, Body Composition and Frailty in Elderly People.Exercise Program Effecsts. EXERNET...
Frail Elderly SyndromeSarcopenia1 moreOne of the major changes occurring in developed societies is a significant ageing of the population. Nowadays, because of an enhanced life expectancy, 17% of the Spanish population is composed of people over 65 and the number is expected to rise to 33% in 2050. Aging is characterized by a gradual lifelong accumulation of molecular and cellular damage that results in a progressive and generalized impairment in several bodily functions, an increased vulnerability to environmental challenges and a growing risk of disease and risk of death. These facts led to an increase on the prevalence of diseases such as osteoporosis diabetes, sarcopenia, obesity or frailty. However, lifestyles such as physical activity could attenuated aging process, maintaining the autonomy of elders, and it has been demonstrated that even implying guided exercise programs could reverse this condition of frailty and dependence. In this way, the main aims of this research project are to analyze the effect of a multicomponent exercise program in frailty and pre-frailty people above 65 years and without cognitive impairment. Thus, it is going to be evaluated at the beginning and the end of the study; body composition, physical fitness, blood parameters including vitamin D and other health related parameters included in a questionnaire. Secondly, to study the perdurability of training-related gains over time.
Low Versus High-Intensity Aerobic Training in Community-dwelling Older Men With Post-COVID 19 (SARS-CoV-2)...
SarcopeniaSarcopenia is the major health concern and common consequence of COVID-19 in the ageing population. The objective of this study is to find and compare low and high-intensity aerobic training protocols on clinical and psychological effects in community-dwelling older men with post-COVID 19 Sarcopenia.
Potential Benefits of Expanded Hemodialysis in Prevention of Sarcopenia
Chronic Kidney Disease Requiring Chronic DialysisThe current study will investigate whether long term implementation of expanded hemodialysis (HDx) will effectively decrease serum levels of large uremic toxins and ameliorate progression of sarcopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease requiring hemodialysis.
Effect of Ishige Okamurae Extract on Musculoskeletal Biomarkers in Adults With Relative Sarcopenia...
SarcopeniaThe investigators conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of Ishige Okamurae extracts on muscle strength, muscle mass, and muscle function in adults with relative sarcopenia for 12 weeks.
Impact of Whey Protein Supplementation on Body Weight and Metabolic Parameters of Bariatric Patients...
Bariatric SurgerySarcopeniaObesity is a metabolic disorder, characterized by an increase in the body's fat mass, which will reflect an increase in total body weight. In Brazil, overweight accounts for 53.8% of the population, and of these 18.9% are obese. Surgical treatment is currently the most successful method for weight loss in patients with Grade III obesity and reduced associated morbidities. The general objective is to evaluate genetic, inflammatory, and dietary factors that would influence weight loss and the appearance of protein deficiency or sarcopenia in patients undergoing bariatric surgery and to evaluate the effects of protein supplementation for 8 weeks after the 18th postoperative month in the parameters evaluated. The study has a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked model. The patients will be selected in two bariatric surgery services accredited by the Brazilian Health Unic System (SUS) in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The project has already been approved by the Brazilian Ethics committee CONEP/UFMG by nº. 75415317.8.0000.5149. Patients of both sexes over 20 years of age will be included, attending the hospitals of the project with regular follow-up in the postoperative period. Data on anthropometry, body composition, muscle strength, energy expenditure, and inflammatory profile will be collected. The data will be correlated with the evaluation of the presence of genetic polymorphisms.
Omega-3 Supplementation and Resistance Training
SarcopeniaDynapenia1 moreThe purpose of this project is to evaluate whether omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (combined eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid [EPA/DHA] supplement) augments the effects of a 12-week resistance training program in older men. Outcome variables include inflammatory biomarkers in the systemic circulation, body composition and performance measures. The specific inflammatory markers in the blood include: C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6. Remaining parameters include: body composition (as assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry), muscle strength (as assessed by chest press and leg press one-repetition maximum strength tests), and functional ability (as assessed by timed up and go test as well as the 6-minute walking test).
Improving Rehabilitation In Sarcopenia (IRIS)
SarcopeniaThis randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled supplementation trial tested the hypothesis that nutritional supplementation with muscle-target nutritional supplementation concurrent with regular, controlled physical activity would increase the efficacy of physical rehabilitation in old adults suffering from sarcopenia
Dietary Nitrate and Muscle Power With Aging
AgingSarcopeniaThe purpose of this study is to see if drinking beetroot juice (BRJ) is beneficial for aging patients. We hope to determine the effect of BRJ on exercise performance. BRJ improves exercise performance in athletes and normal people. We are trying to determine if BRJ improves exercise performance in aging patients. We will be comparing the effects of BRJ versus the effects of a placebo (BRJ without the nitrates that are naturally occurring in beets and other similar foods). It is thought that the benefits of BRJ may come from its natural nitrate content. Although BRJ is available for purchase in grocery stores, for the purposes of this study it is considered investigational, which means that it has not been approved as a medical therapy.
Dose Range Finding Study of Bimagrumab in Sarcopenia
SarcopeniaThe purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of repeat dosing with multiple dose levels of bimagrumab on patient physical function, skeletal muscle mass and strength in older adults with sarcopenia. In addition, this study generated data on the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of bimagrumab in older adults with sarcopenia.
