Heart FailureSarcopenia4 moreThe goal of this cross-sectional study is to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with Heart Failure. The main question it aims to answer is: Whether there is a difference in the prevalence of sarcopenia across the spectrum of HFpEF (Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction) and HFrEF (heart failure with reduced ejection fraction). This is an observational study. The participant population involves patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Healthy volunteers will be recruited as controls in addition to adults with asymptomatic Type 2 Diabetes. Participants will undergo the following: Skeletal muscle mass, quality and body composition assessments using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) Skeletal muscle strength assessments (Dynamometer, FysioMeter, handgrip strength) Skeletal muscle energetics assessment (31p-Spectroscopy pre/post-exercise recovery) Researchers will compare Heart failure groups with healthy controls and adults with asymptomatic type 2 Diabetes to see if there are significant differences in the strength, mass and quality of skeletal muscle.
Studying Malnutrition And Sarcopenia In Older Adults With Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Acute Myeloid LeukemiaLeukemia1 moreThis study will explore how malnutrition (poor nutrition/diet) and sarcopenia (a condition that causes a loss of muscle and bone mass) affects study participants over the age of 60 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who will receive induction chemotherapy (chemotherapy given as the first treatment to help cancer go into remission) and/or cancer drugs as part of standard care for AML. By studying how these nutritional and skeletal factors, doctors leading this study hope to learn how malnutrition and sarcopenia may be able to predict certain outcomes --such as how long study participants with poor nutrition and muscle loss can live after chemotherapy- for older (age 60+) individuals with AML.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate osteoporosis by using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in the long course after esophagectomy. At least 3 years should have elapsed since operation without recurrence of esophageal cancer.

The presence of these complications portends poor prognosis. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a formal home based video strengthening program (REST) on sarcopenia and frailty. We also want to assess the impact of this exercise program on complication rates, hospitalization, on quality of life (QOL) and on survival.

SarcopeniaP31 nuclear magnetic resonance (RMN) Spectroscopy (SRM P31) has currently being poorly used in the field of sarcopenia. The aim of the CAMUS study is to investigate the feasibility a protocol of SRM P31 at rest, during and after a standardized physical task. The secondary objective is to compare the metabolism of tyhe skeletal muscle tissue assessed by SRM P31 in young and older individuals. A pilot study, cross-sectional study will be conducted. Ten healthy sedentary 70+ years males and 10 sedentary 25 to 30 years old male will be included. Level of physical activity, physical performances, will be assessed at baseline. RMN (T1; tractography and SRM P31) will be performed. SRM P31 will be performed at rest, during and after an exhausting muscle task at 70% 1-RM. Feasibility will be judged on the rate of valuable variables recorded (>90%) inorganic phosphate (iP), phosphocreatine (PCr) and isoform of adenosine triphosphate (ATP : alfa, beta, gamma).

Determining the Muscle Anabolic Properties of Phosphatidic Acid.
SarcopeniaAgeing is characterized by a loss of muscle mass that is detrimental for physical function and metabolic health and increases the risk of mortality. The loss of muscle protein mass with ageing is characterized by a blunted muscle anabolic response to nutrition and exercise. Thus, interventions to counteract muscle anabolic blunting in old age might assist in the long-term maintenance of muscle mass. Phosphatidic acid (hereafter defined as 'PA') is a novel nutrient compound that has been suggested to play an important role in muscle growth. Oral consumption of PA may amplify the signalling response to nutrition and exercise and restore muscle anabolic sensitivity in older adults. In order for PA to be 'clinically' applied as a means to mitigate muscle loss in aged populations, we must first understand the efficacy and mechanisms underlying the anabolic properties of this compound, which have yet to be defined in man. The proposed pilot study is needed to investigate the acute muscle metabolic properties of oral PA supplementation in older individuals. Sixteen healthy (non-obese, non-diabetic, non-smokers) older males aged 65-75 yrs will initially complete a lower-limb strength assessment and undergo a body composition scan. Between 4-14 days after these initial assessments, participants will be assigned to co-ingest 1.5g of either phosphatidic acid (N= 8; PA) or a non-caloric placebo (N=8; PL) after following a bout of moderate intensity, single leg resistance exercise. A stable isotope infusion will be combined with serial muscle biopsies from the thigh of each leg to determine the measure rates of muscle protein synthesis in the fasted state and in the 'early' and 'late' phase of feeding-only and exercise-plus-feeding.
