Evaluation of Dorsal Visual Stream in Patients With Schizophrenia
SchizophreniaSchizophrenia patients in comparing to normal controls show decreased ability to identify objects with decreased level of fragmentation, a task that is associated with magnocellular pathway function.
Hematological Clozapine Monitoring With a Point-of-care Device (CHEMPAQ)
SchizophreniaClozapine remain the drug of choice for treatment resistant schizophrenia and up to 60% of patients not responding to other antipsychotics will respond to clozapine. However, the use of clozapine is restricted due to the risk of agranulocytosis and consequently the need for mandatory hematological monitoring. CHEMPAQ XBC is a point-of-care device that can be used in patients home and analyze WBC and granulocytes by a single capillary blood drop. This study aims to investigate whether this new procedure increases the acceptability of clozapine
Bipolar and Schizophrenia Consortium for Parsing Intermediate Phenotypes
SchizophreniaBipolarBriefly, this multisite study is designed to identify endophenotypes (i.e., heritable biomarkers) associated with either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder alone, or both together. The subsequent genetic analyses will search genomic loci and candidate genes associated with each of the independent endophenotypes. This is a five site study that is slotted for NIMH funding.

Schizophrenia and Disorders With Psychotic FeaturesAffective Disorders2 moreThe objective of this study is to explore the longitudinal course of self-disturbances (SD) in schizophrenia. The main aim of the study is to investigate, in a 6-7-year follow-up of a representative sample of patients with first-episode schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other psychoses. The current study is a seven year follow-up of this representative cohort, with baseline measures of SDs and a comprehensive clinical and neurocognitive assessment battery.
Correlation Between Clinical Deterioration in Schizophrenic Patients and Hair Cortisol Levels
SchizophreniaSchizo-Affective DisorderThe importance of stress as a possible deteriorating factor for schizophrenic patients is well documented. However, this notion is based on subjective experience and retrospective psychological analysis. A novel method of measuring cortisol using hair has a proven correlation to subjective stress in non-clinical as well as psychiatric clinical populations. This pilot study will attempt to assess the use of cortisol hair level, as a marker of stress, to predict clinical deterioration in schizophrenic patients.
