Exploration of the Social Cognition in Adolescents With a Dissociative Disorder or Autism Spectrum...

SchizophreniaAutistic Disorder

The schizophrenic disorders and pervasive developmental disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders distinct origin who share common challenges to engage and maintain social relationships and mutual disturbances of affective contact. An important issue of research is to determine the cognitive and brain mechanisms underlying social disability in these two pathologies. Several lines of social cognition have been systematically explored: the perception of emotions, the ability to attribute intentionality and mental states to others (theory of mind), the understanding of social situations in different contexts. We made the observation today that research findings clearly in the field of autism and schizophrenic disorders that converge on common patterns neurocognitive abnormalities. Consequently, many programs support published today use the same therapeutic targets and the same tools in both pathologies. This raises two questions of science: (1) whether the disorders of social cognition reported in the field of autism and schizophrenia are "specific deficit" and not "specific condition", that is to say they are inherent social disadvantage whatever condition or (2) if these disorders of social cognition is a pattern common to autism and schizophrenia but are the result of specific neurocognitive mechanisms and different in each these pathologies. Systematic exploration of these issues is a current issue for understanding the pathophysiological borders between the two neurodevelopmental disorders but also to better define the potential targets of therapeutic strategies, psycho-educational and remediation of disorders of social cognition in autism and schizophrenia. Main objective: To compare clinical cognitive profiles in adolescents with a schizophrenic disorder, autistic or healthy in the three areas of social cognition: perception of emotions, attribution of intentions to others (theory of mind) and style attribution. We shall constitute three population groups of patients, a group of patients meeting the diagnosis of schizophrenia, a group of patients with autism and a control group (healthy subjects).

SchizophreniaSchizotypal Disorder3 more

The aim of the COPUS study is to investigate, whether it is possible to recruit and retain young people with first-episode psychosis, to an 8 week supervised High-Intensity Functional Training intervention (HIFT) (i.e. COPUS Intervention) and to investigate if oxygen uptake, body composition and physical function improves following participation in the intervention.

Magnesium Variations and Cardiometabolic Risk in Patients With Antipsychotic Drugs

SchizophreniaSchizoaffective Disorder1 more

Background: Antipsychotics can induce metabolic disorders such as obesity, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia or metabolic syndrome. It has been observed that treatment with antipsychotic could be accompanied by a decrease in the concentration of serum magnesium. Low serum concentrations of magnesium are potentially a risk factor of cardiac sudden death (Peacock, 2010). Hypotheses linking magnesium and pathogenesis of cardiovacuscular diseases are multiple. Also, it seems to exist a close relationship between magnesium and carbohydrate metabolism. Most studies on the subject have generally studied plasmatic magnesium. Objective : Describe the relationship between changes in serum and intra-erythrocyte magnesium and cardiometabolic risk in patients innitiating an antipsychotic treatment. A secondary objective is to specify the frequency, magnitude and time to onset of changes in plasma of magnesium levels under antipsychotic treatment. Methods : This is a pilot single-center prospective cohort. After inclusion, patients status (including magnesium levels) will be evaluated (1 and 3 months of treatment) and that status will define the exposure criterion. Included patients will be followed for 1 year during which cardiometabolic markers will be measured. Population : patients who are more than 18 years old with schizophrenia schizoaffective disorder or bipolar disorder, naive to antipsychotic treatment or off for more than 3 months and requiring the introduction of antipsychotic drug therapy. Patients will be recruited during consultations and stays in care units of Adult Psychiatry Unit of Montpellier University Hospital. Factor studied: serum and intra-erythrocytic magnesium levels at beginning and during the antipsychotic treatment measured by a unique analyzer center. Changes in levels of hypomagnesemia expected during the treatment will determine exposure groups. Outcome: cardiometabolic risk markers measured at the beginning and during the treatment will be fasting blood glucose, fasting plasma insulin, HOMA-IR [Ins (uU / mL) x Gly (mmol / L) / 22.5], lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL), BMI, waist circumference and ECG (QTc). Cofactors: age, sex, personal and family medical history, blood pressure, smoking, diet, physical activity, psychiatric disease, Global Impressions, anti-psychotic treatment and comedications. Perspectives : to show that decreased in magnesium levels observed among patients starting antipsychotic treatment is associated with deterioration of cardiometabolic risk markers. The demonstration of this association could explain at least part the increased cardiovascular risk observed in this population. In the longer term, the results of this study would argue the implementation of an intervention research project studying magnesium supplementation to minimize the metabolic effects of antipsychotic medications.

Music to Reduce Use of Smoking in Patients With Schizophrenia

SchizophreniaNicotine Dependence2 more

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of self-selected music listening which targets disrupting the reward process maintaining smoking and additionally attenuating the reward processing deficits associated with schizophrenia. Five participants with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder who smoke/nicotine will participate in an individual session of self-selected music listening for a half an hour.

The Impact of a Helplessness and Recovery of an Empowerment Intervention on People Diagnosed With...

Psychotic Disorders

A randomized controlled trial was conducted from November 2015 and May 2016 with 112 participants of people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Participants aged 18 years or older with Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-V) schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder from outpatient mental health clinics in Jordan, were randomly assigned participants either to receive 6 weeks of a booklet form of intervention with face to face discussion, and treatment as usual (TAU) (intervention, n = 56), or TAU (control, n = 56). Participants were assessed at baseline, immediately post-intervention (post-treatment1) and at three months follow-up. The primary outcome measure was change in helplessness score . Secondary outcomes for PDwS were psychiatric symptoms, recovery rate and quality of life.

Multi-component Intervention for Diabetes in Adults With Serious Mental Illness

SchizophreniaObesity3 more

Persons with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses have a high risk for type 2 diabetes and an increased risk of premature mortality compared to the general population. The goals of the proposed study are to implement a multimodal lifestyle intervention to reduce that risk in these individuals living in residential care facilities, a common housing modality for people with serious mental illnesses. If successful, this intervention will lead to reduction in excess medical comorbidity and mortality in persons with serious mental illnesses.

Validation of a Scale to Evaluate the Perception of Oral Health in Patients With Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia

Apart from objective criteria for the evaluation of oral health (CAO, CPI…), there are no scales to evaluate the oral health of patients with schizophrenia. The only scales that do exist are for the population at large, children or the elderly. Given the severely deteriorated oral health in these schizophrenic populations, it is important to have a tool to evaluate their perception of the quality of their oral health so as to better orientate prevention programmes. The aim of this study is to validate a tool to measure the perception of oral health in patients with schizophrenia. To do this, patients will be invited to complete a series of self-questionnaires relative to the concept of oral health.
