Surgical Outcomes Using Variable Rod Diameters in the Treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis

There are two rod sizes routinely used for the correction of juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, 5.5mm and 6.35mm, typically stainless steel. Currently there is no scientific evidence supporting the superiority of one size rod relative to the other. This study will evaluate the amount of radiographic correction obtained using the 5.5mm versus the 6.35mm spinal instrumentation rods.

Safety and Efficacy of Posture Correction Girdle for Adolescent With Early Scoliosis

For AIS, the caring of patients with spinal deformities has a long and varied history. Severe spinal deformities can greatly reduce pulmonary and cardiac functions, which may lead to death from cardiopulmonary failure. Therefore, surgery is generally suggested when the curvature of the spine is greater than 45-50 degrees. The adverse psychological impact of orthoses treatment on patients and its poor compliance has been a well-recognised problem. Some orthotic research studies indicate that early intervention of spinal deformities is particularly desirable. Taking into consideration current clinical practices, if the curve is less than 20 degrees, even if the child is at a high risk of progressive spinal deformity during the age of 10-16 at puberty, treatment is nothing more than just observation. This project aims to combine clinical experience with textile and materials sciences to research and develop a posture correction girdle for adolescents with early scoliosis. As a result, this will reduce the future likelihood of brace wear or surgery. In this study, the eligible subjects will be given tailor-made posture correction girdles to wear it 8 hours daily. Monitoring and observation will be provided during the six months girdling period. Data will be collected before and after the girdling by X-ray radiograph for analysis, in order to comparison the spine curvature condition. Locomotion of the subject with and without wearing the posture correction girdle will also be reference.

Thromboelastography Transfusion Protocol for Pediatric Neuromuscular Scoliosis Surgery

The long-term goal of this study is to optimize the perioperative care of pediatric spinal deformity patients, minimizing perioperative complications and increasing cost-effectiveness of perioperative hematologic management. The objective of the proposed study, which is the initial step in pursuit of this goal, is to evaluate the effectiveness of thromboelastography (TEG) to monitor coagulation pathways and direct blood product replacement in pediatric neuromuscular spinal deformity surgery. The central hypothesis of this study is that TEG will decrease exposure to allogeneic packed red blood cells (PRBC). The rationale is that proven effectiveness of TEG in neuromuscular deformity may change the standard of care for hematologic management in neuromuscular spinal deformity cases and additionally set the stage for a multicenter trial in idiopathic pediatric deformity.

PMS Evaluation of Safety and Efficacy of the MID-C System 5 Years Post-implantation in AIS

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

The ApiFix MID-C System is a unidirectional expandable rod, designed to be connected unilaterally to the spine via 2 anchor points on the concave side of a scoliotic deformity above and below the apex of the major curvature to treat adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The MID-C System is designed to act as an internal brace. A total of 10 patients, who are planned to undrego the MID-C System implantation procedure will be enrolled for the study. A 5 years follow-up post surgery will be performed for these patients in order to evaluate the long term safety and efficacy of the MID-C System.

Neuromuscular Scoliosis

In the initial evaluation, the degree of spine is measured quantitatively using Cobb's angle and Muscular Dystrophy Spine Questionnaire (MDSQ). The patients who had Cobbs angle of 20-45 'by spinal plain radiography were evaluated for the effects of flexpine brace wearing and rehabilitation for 6 months. After 12 months, whole spine X-ray was taken for the followed up the patient's status.
