Using Implementation Intentions to Reduce Self-harm
Self-HarmThe aim of the present research is to explore whether a brief intervention based on psychological theory can help people to avoid self-harming. The intervention is the Volitional Help Sheet (VHS), or "IF-THEN" plans, which will be tested in the context of trying to reduce self-harm. Each participant will be randomly allocated to one of two conditions. The two conditions are: (1) a control condition, and (2) intervention (form multiple implementation intentions from a drop-down menu). Effectiveness will be inferred via pre-post changes in state mindfulness, state stress, and state well-being.
Randomized Trial to Improve Safe Firearm Storage
Firearm InjuryPediatric Emergency Medicine2 moreThe goal of this clinical trial is to test the effect of providing gun locks to caregivers of children presenting to the emergency department for mental health concerns. The main question it aims to answer is: • Does the provision of gun locks result in higher rates of securement of all household firearms? Participants will be randomized to receive either lethal means counseling (including summary handout) by study team with the provision of 2 cable-style gun locks or lethal means counseling by study team alone (without provision of gun locks). Researchers will compare the lethal means counseling with 2 gun locks group to the lethal means counseling alone group to see if it affects self-reported securement of all household firearms, 4 weeks post emergency department encounter.

Self-Esteem: A Protective Mechanism for Adolescent Mental Health
Self EsteemSuicide and Self-harmThis study will explore the effects of the Injeti Self-Love Model intervention on adolescents challenged with low-self-esteem leading to self-harming, suicidal thoughts and suicidal attempts. This study will examine the promotion of self-esteem through the Injeti Self-Love Model as a safety measure against "poor behavioral habits" such as intentional self-harming, substance abuse, suicidal thinking and suicide attempt as means to cope. Study participation will include initial screening, self-assessment, occupational therapy self-esteem intervention of one session, with an individual follow-up, along with an interview, and finishing up with a one-month follow-up interview. The qualitative research is a methodology for investigating and considering the meaning individuals attribute to a significant human experience. The qualitative approach will be structured around a semi-structured interview initiated at the end of the second follow-up session and after 1-month follow-up.

Addressing Nonsuicidal Self-injury in Schools
Nonsuicidal Self-injurySuicidal Ideation4 moreThe aim of this study is to study the effectiveness of a whole-school approach that addresses non-suicidal self-injury and targets adolescents, parents and teachers. Whether training and interventions can influence NSSI will be examined. Furthermore, investigations will be conducted to examine whether this whole-school approach can reduce symptoms of mental health problems in adolescents, reduce stigma och increase help-seeking and perception of social support. Using a clustered waitlist control design, six lower secondary schools were randomized to either intervention or waitlist during four months (control groups were then given the intervention). Measures of NSSI, suicidality, mental well-being, stigma, attitudes, help-seeking and perceived social support were administered at baseline, after the intervention and at 6, 12 and 18-months follow-up. Two hundred and sixty-seven adolescents in seventh and eight grade participated in the study (135 active group and 132 control group). The interventions were delivered during four months. For adolescents, interventions were delivered in the class room and consisted of five sessions of the Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) program and one additional session focusing specifically on knowledge, stigma and attitudes toward NSSI (KRAS). Parents were offered an online psychoeducation on NSSI, as were all school staff during this time period. School health care personnel, nurses, psychologist and counsellors and other school staff, such as teachers' aids, support staff and mentors took part in a 2-day workshop on NSSI and suicidality.
