Effect of Affective Content on Drug Induced Amnesia of Episodic Memory

Memory LossesAmnesia-Memory Loss

The purpose of this research is to understand how some of the drugs commonly used in anesthesia impair memory. We are particularly interested in whether the emotion associated with a memory influences how well these drugs are able to block memory. We are studying four commonly used drugs-propofol, thiopental, midazolam, and dexmedetomidine, all of which may have slightly differing effects. We will also study an inactive substance, called a placebo, that should have no effect. The results of this study will provide information that will be useful in understanding how memory works, how these drugs affect memory, and possibly why some people don't have their memory blocked as easily as others.

The Efficacy of Phosphatidylserine-Omega3 in Elderly Subjects With Memory Impairment

Memory Impairment

The primary objective of this trial is to assess the ability of Phosphatidylserine-Omega3 to improve cognitive performance in elderly subjects with memory impairment. This study is a single-center, open-label 15 weeks duration trial to assess efficacy of Phosphatidylserine-Omega3 in elderly subjects with memory impairment.

Protocol Memory Deficit in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Memory Deficit

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the evolution of memory deficit (verbal episodic memory, procedural memory, working memory, short-term memory) in Sleep Apnea Obstructive Syndrome (SAOS) patients after treatment by Continuous Positive Airway Pressure treatment (CPAP). For thus, we will compare memory tests in two separate groups of SAOS patients with "effective " versus "ineffective" ( or sham) CPAP, before and 6 weeks after the beginning of the treatment. Thus we will assess the evolution of memory deficit, the effectiveness of the treatment on the evolution of memory deficit before and 6 weeks after the beginning of the treatment by "effective " versus "ineffective" CPAP. We feel the results of the tests of memory will show greater memory disorders in patients with SAOS before beginning the treatment rather than six weeks afterwards. Thus we hypothesise that, after the treatment by "effective" CPAP, the patients with SAOS will have greater improvement of their memory disorders than those treated by "sham CPAP".

rTMS for Working Memory Deficits in Schizophrenia

SchizophreniaSchizoaffective Disorder

In this study, the investigators will be examining the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on memory deficits in individuals with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Half of the study participants will be chosen by chance to receive active rTMS stimulation while half will be chosen by chance to receive sham rTMS. Sham rTMS will feel the same as active rTMS only there will be no direct brain stimulation. This is necessary to ensure that active rTMS is efficacious in the enhancement of memory in individuals with schizophrenia. Based on results from a recently published pilot study, the investigators propose that active rTMS treatment will result in a significant improvement in working memory performance compared to sham rTMS treatment.

Omega-3 and Blueberry Supplementation in Age-Related Cognitive Decline

Age-related Memory DisordersMood Disorders

The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of 6 months' dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and whole freeze dried blueberry powder in improving cognition in older adults. The effects of each of these interventions alone will also be assessed in order to determine whether the combined treatment confers synergistic or additive benefit relative to the effect of each therapy.
