Lanugo Hair Loss as a Marker for Peri-ocular Malignancy
Skin Cancer FaceSkin cancers around the eye are common, but so are other lid lumps. It is useful to be able to tell which lumps are likely to be cancer. This study looks at whether the loss of fine hairs (lanugo hairs) on the skin are a good indicator of whether a lump is a skin cancer or not. The investigators are recruiting patients who have lid lumps who haven't had a biopsy before, who would be having a biopsy as part of their treatment, and seeing whether those who have loss of the fine skin hairs are the same as those who have skin cancer confirmed on their biopsy. The study doesn't involve any extra examinations or treatments for participants. The investigators look at the patients before the biopsy as part of their usual care, and take a note of whether or not they have lost the fine hairs at this stage. The main benefit of participating is that the medical community has better evidence about which lid lumps are likely to represent skin cancer, helping future diagnosis. There are no additional risks to participating. The risks of biopsy are unchanged whether patients participate in the study or not. The study is run from the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh, in conjunction with Moorfields Eye Hospital, London The investigators aim to start the study in Spring 2018, and will most likely recruit for 6 months depending on the number of participants recruited. There is no additional funding from any source at present - the work will be undertaken by doctors in their research time.
Electronic Brachytherapy (eBx)-Mohs Matched Pair - Cohort Study A Multi-Center Retrospective-Prospective...
Nonmelanoma Skin CancerThis is a retrospective-prospective study design. Patients who completed treatment approximately 3 years (range of 2-4 years) at time of IRB approval of this study will be identified and any existing data in the patient's record will be collected in addition to conducting office visits for long-term follow-up.
Early Diagnosis of Malignant Transformation of Pigmentary Skin Lesions
Malignant MelanomaPigmented Nevi1 moreMalignant Melanoma is a deadly skin cancer that can be cured if diagnosed early. To date atypical pigmented skin lesions are diagnosed by appearance alone and many moles and lesions are excised unnecessarily and on the other hand malignant lesions are missed and diagnosed too late. In this study a protein conjugated to a florescent dye is spread on a suspicious pigmented lesion, the hypothesis is that this protein binds to malignant cells only and thus with a special camera that picks up the dye we can find pigmented lesions with early malignant transformation.
Investigate the Diagnostic Value and Possibilities of OCT in Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer.
Skin NeoplasmsWe will do systematic and functional assessment of non-melanoma skin cancer including precancerous lesions by OCT imaging and other diagnostic methods. The systematic assessment will be comparison of clinical diagnosis, histopathology, OCT images, spectrophotometry and high frequency ultrasound of non-melanoma skin cancer Functional exploration of non-melanoma skin cancer is done with Doppler-OCT and polarization-sensitive-OCT.
Clinical Usefulness of Optical Skin Biopsy
Skin NeoplasmsTraditional biopsy requires the removal, fixation, and staining of tissues from the human body. Its procedure is invasive and painful. Non-invasive in vivo optical biopsy is thus required, which should provide non-invasive, highly penetrative, three-dimensional (3D) imaging with sub-micron spatial resolution. Optical biopsy based on scanning two-photon fluorescence microscopy (TPFM) is a good method for biopsy of skin due to its high lateral resolution, low out-of-focus damage, and intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) section capability. However current technology still presents several limitations including low penetration depth, in-focus cell damages, and multi-photon phototoxicity due to high optical intensity in the 800 nm wavelength region, and toxicity if exogenous fluorescence markers were required. We study the harmonics optical biopsy of a human skin sample using a femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser centered at 1230 nm. Higher harmonics generation is known to leave no energy deposition to the interacted matters due to their energy-conservation characteristic. This energy-conservation characteristic provides the "noninvasive" nature desirable for clinical imaging. In our study, we will evaluate the clinical applications of optical skin biopsy using harmonic generation microscopy.
Molecular Characterization of Cutaneous Tumors
Squamous Cell CarcinomaBasal Cell CarcinomaThe objective is to find genes which are responsible for the appearance of skin tumors (sCC, BCC) and it will be the basis for prediction of the disease and response to the treatment
The Molecular Predisposition to Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC)
Bladder CancerColorectal Cancer4 moreThe goal of this study is to understand factors which may influence risk for colorectal and other cancers in families. These factors include genetic variability, in combination with diet and lifestyle. In order to achieve these goals, we need to contact as many eligible participants as possible.
ACCEPTABILITY AND WRITING FREQUENCY OF ADVANCED DIRECTIVES IN ONCO-DERMATOLOGY PATIENTS
Advance DirectivesOncology5 moreThe law about advance directives is evolving but, in France, few people write it. Te main endpoint of this research is to estimate the proportion of patients who have written their advance directives or considering doing so in onco-dermatologic population. If this rate remains low, some insights on the reasons will be able to be advanced looking at the point of view and opinion of patients about this topic. Seconds endpoints are : For patients against or not planning to write it, understand their reasons Estimate the proportion of patients requesting information and understand how they would like to receive it. Investigate a possible association between the stage of the oncological disease and the positioning of the patient concerning advance directives.
Follow-up of Elderly Patients in Ambulatory Surgery
Breast CancerSkin Cancer2 moreThe number of surgical procedures performed in ambulatory hospitalization for cancers of the skin or breast is increasing for medical and economic reasons. But the protocols of care and the clinical pathways are poorly adapted for elderly patients with physical or cognitive impairment. The goal of this study is to test the impact of an oncology ambulatory surgical care in patients aged 75 years or older, with breast or skin cancer and treated in Henri Mondor hospital on the increase in the proportion of patients operated on an outpatient basis
