Bipolar Disorder

The purpose of this study is to determine if sleep deprivation and sleep phase advancement is effective treatment of bipolar patients in a depressive phase.

Social Determinants of Sleep and Obesity

Insufficient SleepPhysical Inactivity2 more

African American adults sleep less and obtain worse quality sleep compared to the national average, and emerging evidence links inadequate sleep with greater morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer. To address this public health concern, the proposed research seeks to use a multi-method approach to adapt a sleep intervention for African American adults with overweight/obesity not meeting national sleep duration or physical activity recommendations. The overall goal of the project is to reduce cancer and obesity-related health disparities among African Americans.

Effect of Sleep Deprivation on Sensory Integration of Balance, Fall Risk and Postural Stability...

Sleep Deprivation

Sleepiness caused by sleep deprivation may increase the risk of injuries and damages during physical activity. Individual data so far indicates worsening of postural stability and control with females exhibiting better static postural stability regardless of sleeping conditions in comparison to men. However, the literature is deficient in terms of postural stability conditions with eyes open and eyes closed states, as well as fall risk and sensory integration of balance.

Sleep Disruption in Post-operative Patients in the Neurocritical Care Unit

Sleep Fragmentation

The role of sleep in patients admitted to the intensive care unit is an emerging field of research. There have been studies that show patients in the ICU have poor sleep including sleep fragmentation, multiple arousals, decreased stage 3 sleep and reduced REM sleep (1, 2, 3). Causes of poor sleep in the ICU include severity of illness, abnormal light exposure, and frequent arousals for medical care. Not only does poor sleep contribute to reduced cognitive function and delirium, but there are also implications for the immune system function and wound healing (4). Polysomnography is regarded as the gold standard for sleep studies, however it has limited utility in the ICU population (5) and alternative methods of sleep analysis need to be investigated to better understand the underlying physiologic mechanisms and subsequent cognitive effects.

Effect of Lithium Carbonate on Postoperative Sleep in Patients Undergoing Videoassisted Thoracic...

Sleep Deprivation

It has been proved that lithium carbonate can prolong slow wave sleep with few or no side-effects. The aim of the present study is to evaluate postoperative sleep quality of patients undergoing video assisted thoracic surgery taken 250mg lithium carbonate 6 hours after surgery.

Effects of Exercise Training in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Sleep Apnea: A Pilot Study...

Sleep Deprivation

Background: There are still many gaps in research concerning the effect of different physical training modalities on sleep deprivation in the population with different types of sleep apnea. Aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of moderate-intensity interval training (MITT) on patients with different types of sleep apnea.

Sleep Self-Regulation Using Mental Imagery

Sleep DeprivationInsomnia

This randomised controlled trial assessed the efficacy of four mental imagery techniques for improving sleep and its related behaviour: (1) imagery focused on reducing arousal levels; (2) imagery incorporating implementation intentions (a strategy designed to link specified behaviour with the anticipated context) for sleep-related behaviour; (3) a combination of imagery using arousal reduction and implementation intention strategies; or (4) a condition where participants were asked to imagine their typical post work activities.

Improving the Sleep and Circadian Rhythms of Mechanically Ventilated Patients

Critical IllnessSleep Deprivation3 more

The goal of this project is to determine whether the sleep and circadian rhythms of critically ill patients undergoing mechanical ventilation can be improved through practical strategies that can be employed at the bedside.

Direct Noise Reduction in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) Using Earplugs and Noise Canceling Headphones...

DeliriumSleep Fragmentation

This study seeks to examine the effects of overnight noise reduction in critically ill patients who are receiving mechanical ventilation. The investigators will randomly place subjects into one of three groups: 1) usual care 2) overnight earplugs 3) overnight earplugs and noise-canceling headphones. The investigators will monitor for safety, and will measure the amount of delirium experienced by subjects, record the amount of sedating and painkilling medicines required, and measure sleep quality during the study, among other information. The investigators will also measure noise levels experienced by patients in each group. The investigators predict that the use of overnight noise reduction will be safe and will reduce the amount of delirium by improving the quality of sleep in critically ill patients.
