The aim of this study was to determine the effects of an innovative child-friendly remind-to-move treatment (RTM) treatment by comparing it with constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) on upper extremity outcomes in children with hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy. In an evaluator-blinded randomized controlled trial, 73 children, among of whom 20 in Manual Ability Classification System level I, 38 level II, and 15 level III, were recruited from 3 special schools and randomized to receive 75-hour RTM (n=25) and CIMT (n=24) programme over 15-weekdays, and conventional treatment (n=24). The primary outcomes were Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) and Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOTMP-II) Subtest 3 for assessing the motor efficiency at baseline, posttest, and 1- and 3-month follow-up.

Equinus Deformity

This research will lead to the first evaluation of intrinsic and dynamic joint and muscle mechanics of equinus in cerebral palsy. It would provide a direct cause and effect relationship between equinus and bone deformity. Mechanical insights to the pathophysiology of the targeted muscles will lead to better understanding and, thus, to a better medical and surgical management of equinus deformity. Secondary aim will provide an important insight whether key gait parameters can be exclusively relied upon for surgical treatment planning and evaluation. In a medium-term perspective, depending upon the results of this study, dynamic MRI of the ankle joint may serve as a guiding tool for fixed equinus surgery in case of cerebral palsy.

In this study the investigators evaluate the side effect of multiple intrathecal injection of bone marrow stem cell in patients with cerebral palsy.

Functional Electrical Stimulation for Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy

Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how a functional electrical stimulation (FES) device worn on the lower leg effects how children (ages 6-17 years) with hemiplegic cerebral palsy walk and perform other functional activities. The investigators expect to find that wearing the functional electrical stimulation device will improve walking and other functional activities of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Participants will be trained in use of the device and will be required to wear it daily for 3 months. Each participant will be evaluated before beginning the intervention and after completing the intervention. This study will provide important information regarding the benefits of this treatment intervention in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

The study aims to evaluate evidence-based practice behavior in usual care physical therapy in Flanders. Secondly, it aims to compare the effectiveness of a predefined physical therapy program based on evidence-based guidelines to the effects of a period of usual care. It is hypothesized that supporting therapists by providing a predefined evidence-based intervention program, will result in an improved treatment outcome compared to the usual care physical therapy.

Cerebral Palsy (CP)

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders of the development of movement and posture but often changing motor impairment syndromes. The spastic subtypes are the most common manifestations of cerebral palsy who perform movement difficultly due to hypertonia. Decease of spinal cord pathway, hyperactivity of alpha and gamma motoneuron and reduction of presynaptic inhibition may cause tendon reflex increase and hypertonia in individuals with CP. There are many ways to improve the hypertonia. In the past studies, the fast repeated range of motion could reduce muscle's activation effectively. The polyarticular movement training might increase joint range of motion and reduce the muscle activation. But the polyarticular movement training is difficulty for some individuals with CP. The single joint movement training may achieve the same effect as the polyarticular movement training. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of continuation passive range of motion (CPM) training whether could get the improvement of soleus hypertonia in individuals with CP.
