Cervical Laminoplasty Versus Laminectomy and Fusion: the Long-term Results Comparison

Myelopathy Cervical

The objective of this study is to retrospectively analyze and compare the long-term clinical and radiographic results of multi-level laminoplasty to multi-level laminectomy and fusion for the treatment of patients with cervical myelopathy or myeloradiculopathy.

Interventional Cooperative Agreement Program - Vocational Intervention Demonstration

Spinal Cord InjuriesBrain Injuries2 more

For many people with spinal cord injury or brain injury, seeking employment after injury is an important goal. There are services available to help people with disabilities. However, the best ways to coordinate and deliver these services are not yet known. This project will compare two ways of coordinating and delivering services that are designed to help people with spinal cord injury or brain injury obtain employment.

Multi-speed Ergonomic Wheelchair

Spinal Cord DiseasesSpinal Cord Injuries

Over one million Americans rely on their upper extremities for manual wheelchair propulsion. Shoulder overuse injuries are prevalent among manual wheelchair users and these injuries often result in shoulder pain. Severe shoulder pain can lead some wheelchair users to transition from manual to powered mobility, complicating transportation, and reducing independence in activities of daily living. This project will expand the understanding of a new wheelchair design that allows better positioning of the hand rims and allows for different gearing. The investigators will study steady-state propulsion efficiency with different gear ratios and develop a new system with multiple gear ratios. The advanced gearing will allow for a low gear when initiating movement, going uphill, or when moving over carpet, and then a higher gear option for movements on hard flat level terrain. This system has the potential to dramatically improve shoulder ergonomics and reduce pain in many future manual wheelchair users.

An Investigation of the Metal Concentration in Patients Implanted With the PRESTIGE LP™ Cervical...

Cervical Degenerative Disc DiseaseRadiculopathy1 more

This clinical study will assess the metal concentrations present in the blood serum of patients who receive surgical treatment with the PRESTIGE LP™ Cervical Disc at two contiguous cervical levels from C3-C7. The information obtained from this clinical investigation will be used to support the post market surveillance for a PMA supplement for the PRESTIGE LP™ Cervical Disc implanted at two contiguous levels.

Progressive Resistance Training in Acute Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord InjuriesQuadriplegia4 more

Muscle weakness is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms following a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Strength training is recommended as an effective means to increase muscular strength and improve function for individuals with long term SCI. In contrast, the strength training guidance for those with a recent (<1 year) SCI is lacking. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the feasibility of a method of upper limb strengthening - Progressive Resistance Training (PRT) and its impact upon muscle strength and function.

Diffusion MRI in Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy (CSM)

Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy

Patients who have been diagnosed with Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy will be asked to undergo an MRI using diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI) technology. The patients will have this MRI preoperatively and at 24 months postop. The investigators believe that with this imaging, biomarkers will be able to be seen to assist in prediction of long term outcomes in patients with spinal cord compression. These patients will be compared to healthy cohorts who will also undergo an MRI using the DBSI technology.
