Comparison of Deviation Types Among Astigmatic Children With Or Without Amblyopia
Astigmatism of Both EyesAmblyopia1 morethe records of astigmatic children were reviewed and any deviation was investigated at near and distance. refractive errors, stereopsis, convergence insufficiency were also evaluated. children were divided into two groups according to the presence of amblyopia and ocular deviations and other parameters were compared between groups.

Development of the Eye Motor System During the First 7 Months of Life in Infants With and Without...
HealthyStrabismusLittle is known about the development of the ocular, or eye, motor system (the parts of the brain that control how the eyes move) in children. Recent technological and methodological advances now enable researchers to investigate the visual system and ocular motor system of infants, but few findings have been reported. This study hypothesizes that quantitative analysis of "at-risk" infants' eye movement systems can detect abnormalities that precede and predict the onset of strabismus, or cross-eye. We will collect data on the eye movements of a group of infants born between 36 and 44 weeks after conception. These infants will be enrolled between 4 and 24 weeks after birth and followed at 4-week (+/- 5 days) intervals until 28 weeks of age and then once a year until 3 years after birth. The infants will undergo a complete ophthalmic evaluation at each visit after they enroll. At all visits up to 28 weeks of age, they will also undergo analysis of eye movements. We also will monitor the development of ocular alignment and check to detect other visual system abnormalities. The study will provide basic knowledge about the cause of both normal and abnormal alignment of both eyes in infants in the first 28 weeks of life.
Does Anxiety in Children on the Day of Surgery Impact Compliance in the Ophthalmology Clinic?
AnxietyStrabismus1 moreThe hypothesis is that pediatric patients with increased levels of anxiety on the day of surgery, in particular at point of anesthetic induction, will demonstrate decreased compliance with assessment in ophthalmology clinic postoperatively.
Vision in Children Born to Opioid-dependent Methadone-maintained Mothers
Vision DisordersStrabismus2 moreThe investigators will re-investigate 150 children studied extensively in the past. 100 of these children were born to mothers prescribed methadone during their pregnancy because of opiate dependency, and 50 were comparison children who were not exposed to drugs. These children were investigated when they were newborn babies, and again when they were six months old, and a quarter of the drug-exposed babies had problems with their eyesight, whilst very few of the comparison children has eyesight problems. The investigators would like to see whether the eyesight problems are still present in the children now that they are older. Because they are older, more detailed testing can be undertaken which will help to understand how drug exposure in the womb may have affected their eyesight. The investigators will recruit new, comparison children to the study to match the number of comparison children with the number of drug-exposed children. The findings will be relevant and important when advising mothers on drug use - both prescribed and illicit - when they are pregnant.
Validation of the Utility of Strabismus Intelligent Diagnostic System
Ophthalmological DisorderStrabismusStrabismus affects approximately 0.8%-6.8% of the world's population and appears by the age of 3 years in 65% of affected individuals. Manual measurement of deviation is often laborious and highly dependent on the experience of the specialist and the cooperation of the patients. Current strabismus evaluation technologies are heavily dependent on model eyes. Here, the investigators use deep learning to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) platform consisting of three deep learning (DL) systems to screen strabismus, evaluate deviation and propose a surgical plan based on corneal light-reflection photos. The investigator also conduct clinical trial to validate its versatility in clinical practice.
Virtual Reality Test of Strabismus
StrabismusStrabismus, or squint, describes any misalignment of the eyes, and can affect both children and adults. As a result, the images of the outside world conveyed to the brain from the two eyes do not correspond, which can result in diplopia, or 'double vision'. As well as impacting on a patient's functionality, strabismus can have cosmetic and psychosocial ramifications. Furthermore, if left untreated in childhood, strabismus can lead to life-long visual impairment, despite best spectacle correction. Current treatment is guided by the exact nature of the strabismus and the patient's age; options include spectacle prescription to correct underlying refractive error, use of prisms to control deviation, or in certain cases, surgery. In order to investigate the size and type of strabismus present, and determine the best management, tests of ocular deviation are performed in Eye Clinics. Quantitative objective assessment of the angle of horizontal and vertical strabismus is currently performed using the prism cover test - the patient is asked to look at a fixation target, and prisms of increasing power are placed in front of one eye until the ocular deviation is neutralised (i.e. there is no movement of the eyes to take up fixation). The test can provide accurate numerical recordings to aid in monitoring and surgical planning. However, the prism cover test requires a range of different prisms, the presence of a near and distance fixation target, a trained examiner, and a patient able to fixate at an appropriate target without moving their head for the duration of the test. In this study, it will be investigated whether a virtual reality headset-based test can produce comparable measurements of ocular deviation to the traditional prism cover test, without the need for prisms, or control of head posture.
