Attention Control Treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ׂ(PTSD)

The purpose of this study is to explore the efficacy of Attention Control Training for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). ACT was found to be effective in decreasing attention bias variability and PTSD symptoms in combat veterans (Badura-Brack, et al., 2015). It is now important to continue the examination of ACT's efficacy in additional populations of patients with PTSD. Such extension of treatment to other traumatic experiences raises the question of whether the threatening content of the training material could be personalized for each patient.

Acupuncture for PTSD

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Current treatments for Veterans with PTSD include medications and therapy where the patient talks about traumatic events in order to desensitize to them. While these treatments work for many, a large minority of Veterans do not want medications or exposure therapy. The investigators developed an acupuncture (ACU) treatment for PTSD in order to broaden treatment options. The investigators' first study showed that it helped most people. However, the investigators need better scientific evidence that it works by comparing ACU to a placebo, such as "sham" acupuncture (fewer needles in non-important sites) and determining if ACU alters abnormal physiology in PTSD. In this study 90 Veterans will be randomly assigned (like a coin flip) to receive either ACU or sham. The investigators expect to find that the ACU treated patients have more improvement in PTSD and in physiology (less startle reaction - assessed non-invasively using skin sensors) than the patients in the sham group. This study will provide information to support the use of acupuncture for PTSD at the VA, which will expand treatment options.

Phase II Study of BNC210 in PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, evaluating the effects of BNC210 versus placebo on the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, as measured by the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5). The secondary objectives of the study are to evaluate the effects of BNC210 on anxiety, depression, global functioning and patient reported outcomes in patients with PTSD. Safety and tolerability of BNC210 will also be assessed. Study participants will receive 12 weeks of blinded treatment followed by a 3 week follow-up period.

Cognitive Remediation for Alcohol Use Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

The project will examine whether a computerized neuroscience-based cognitive training program can improve cognitive functioning and recovery outcomes among Veterans with Alcohol Use Disorder and co-occurring PTSD. Information from this study will help determine the malleability of cognitive dysfunction, an established risk factor for poor recovery outcomes in this population. Improved functional outcomes can decrease risk of chronic impairment and ultimately help affected individuals live richer, more productive lives. Web-based treatment technologies may increase the reach and impact of treatment, and foster patient recovery in cases where staffing, space, acceptability of counseling, and transportation are barriers. Findings may also support expanding use of existing, highly-accessible cognitive remediation technologies to other vulnerable clinical populations.

Firefighters Accessing Care for Trauma: A Clinical Case Series of Distance NET for PTSD/I Symptoms...

Repeated exposure to trauma is an unavoidable part of the job for firefighters. Because of this, many Canadian firefighters screen positive for posttraumatic stress disorder/injury (PTSD/I). Unfortunately, like the general population, firefighters face many barriers to accessing mental health care. As a result, additional efforts are needed to increase timely access to effective PTSD/I services that are delivered in a way that reduces confidentiality and stigma risk. This research study will test the preliminary efficacy and feasibility of distance-delivered Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) delivered by a paraprofessional for firefighters with PTSD/I. NET is an evidence-based intervention approach developed specifically for PTSD/I resulting from repeated and continuous trauma. The intervention will be conducted via videoconference with a trained paraprofessional supervised by a clinical psychologist. The NET intervention will consist of 12 weekly 90-minute videoconference sessions. Approximately 25 firefighters will be recruited to participate in the study. To test the efficacy of the intervention, participants will complete self-report questionnaires about PTSD/I and other mental health symptoms pre- and post-intervention as well as two- and six-months following intervention completion. Participants will also complete an open-ended interview at the end of the intervention to assess feasibility and participant satisfaction.

PTSD

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition that increases suicide risk and affects up to 20% of military veterans and 8% of the general population. Prolonged Exposure (PE) is a highly effective behavioral (talk therapy) intervention for PTSD. However, dropout rates are high (25-30%) and an estimated one-third of patients who complete PE still report symptoms of PTSD at the end of treatment. This study directly addresses these limitations by using a clinical trial to evaluate the ability of an innovative technology system to improve PE therapy for veterans with PTSD.

Simple Cognitive Task After Trauma EKUT RCT

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

This research study is designed to investigate the effects of a simple cognitive task (a memory cue following by playing the computer game "Tetris") on intrusive memories ("flashbacks") and other symptoms after a traumatic event. Patients presenting to a hospital emergency department soon after a traumatic event will be randomly allocated to either the simple cognitive task intervention or control. Participants will be followed up at one week and one month, and where possible 3 and 6 months. It is predicted that participants given the simple cognitive task intervention will develop fewer intrusive memories and less severe related clinical symptoms than those who are not. This will inform the future development of a simple technique to prevent distressing psychological symptoms after a traumatic event. Implementation and training aspects in a hospital context will also be explored. Patients use their smartphone for part of the intervention in the study.

Program for Alleviating and Resolving Trauma and Stress 1

This single-arm pilot study (Phase 1) will test the preliminary efficacy of a virtually delivered, live-online 16-week group model of Internal Family Systems (IFS) for individuals with PTSD, called the PARTS program, on PTSD symptoms measured by Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS-5). In addition, feasibility, acceptability, and effects on self-report PTSD and disturbances of self-organization (DSO) will be secondary outcomes.
