Improving Mind/Body Health and Functioning With Integrative Exercise

Stress DisordersPost-Traumatic

There is evidence demonstrating that aerobic exercise improves many symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) including; anxiety, depression, insomnia, and cognition. With the goal of using exercise as a rehabilitation therapy for Veterans with PTSD, a team of scientists and doctors developed a 12-week exercise program, combining aerobic and strength training with concentration training and mindful breathing techniques. The initial pilot study suggested that Integrative Exercise may improve overall quality of life, sleep quality, cardiovascular fitness, and PTSD symptoms. This new study will help determine the effectiveness of Integrative Exercise compared to health education classes. The overall goal is to determine if integrative exercise is an effective rehabilitation intervention for combat Veterans with PTSD.

Child Characteristics, Neuromarkers, and Intervention Components Impacting Treatment Outcome: CCT,...

Stress DisordersPost-Traumatic

This study is designed to examine three treatment conditions for traumatized youth: Cue-Centered Treatment (CCT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Treatment as Usual (TAU) to determine which treatment works most effectively for which youth. The investigators would like to determine feasibility of training on the treatment interventions. In addition, this study aims to inform development of systems of care for chronically traumatized youth. The investigators hope to determine whether 1) TF-CBT and CCT will have better outcomes than TAU, 2) Child characteristics predict better outcome in either TF-CBT or CCT and to identify which phases of treatment are most effective, and 3) Imaging findings will be predictors of improved outcome. This research is important because while there are many existing trauma interventions for youth, little is known about what is most essential in those interventions. This study will shed light on what components of treatment are most effective. Furthermore, there are minimal guidelines on how to select the most appropriate intervention for a particular child. This study will contribute to that knowledge by informing which interventions are suited best for which youth.

Cognitive-behavioral Therapy for Treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Related Problems...

PTSD

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in a population of individuals with PTSD and common related problems (depression, anxiety or sleep disorders, pain, psychosocial stressors, low social support, substance use disorder). Half of the participants will receive a cognitive behavioral therapy with specific modules for the treatment of related problems (CBT-E) and the other half of participants will receive therapy without specific modules (CBT-C). The main assumption is that participants treated in the CBT-E condition will present a lower level of symptom intensity of PTSD and a higher remission rate than those in the CBT-C condition during the post-treatment assessment. As a secondary objective, an analysis of the different parameters of effectiveness of the two forms of CBT (e.g., average number of sessions required to reach remission, treatment strategies used) will be performed.

Efficacy of Prazosin in Preventing Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Acute Stress Disorder

After a traumatic event such as an accident or an assault, victims may experience intense stress symptoms that may evolve into "post-traumatic stress disorder" (PTSD). It is a frequent and serious pathology, which can be complicated by depression, addiction or suicide. Few means are available to prevent PTSD in people who have just undergone trauma. Prazosin is an antihypertensive drug that blocks α1 adrenaline receptors which could help to stop the vicious circle of stress and prevent the development of the disease. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of prazosin to prevent PTSD in patients who visit an emergency department after trauma.

Online Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in WTC Responders and Survivors

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

If you worked or volunteered as a WTC rescue, recovery or clean-up worker after the 9/11 attacks, or are a survivor of the WTC 9/11 attacks, and you are still experiencing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to your WTC experience, you might be eligible to participate in this clinical trial of therapist-assisted, Internet-based (online) writing therapy for WTC responders and survivors with persistent PTSD symptoms. This study is for WTC responders and survivors who are not currently receiving psychotherapy/counseling. In this study, the researchers aim to find out if Internet-based therapy can help WTC responders and survivors who are still experiencing PTSD symptoms.

IRT and CBT in Sexual Assault Victims With PTSD

Stress DisordersPost-Traumatic

Sexual assault victims (SAV) have an elevated risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma-focused cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective first-line treatment for this pathology. However, although sleep disturbances are a common complaint in SAV with PTSD, trauma-focused CBT does not directly address this symptom. Posttraumatic nightmares are widespread among SAV. Trauma-related sleep disturbances are associated with significant impairment in general functioning and quality of life (mental and physical health), and contribute to the maintenance of PTSD symptoms. This study evaluates the efficacy of sequential nightmare therapy (imagery rehearsal therapy; IRT) and trauma-focused CBT, in comparison to CBT alone. Forty-two SAV suffering from PTSD and sleep difficulties were recruited and randomly assigned to the experimental (IRT+CBT) or control condition (waiting period followed by CBT alone). Participants were administered a clinical interview and a series of questionnaires assessing PTSD symptoms, general functioning and quality of life.

Accelerated TMS to a Novel Brain Target in MDD and PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress DisorderMajor Depressive Disorder

This is a Clinical Trial designed to evaluate novel transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) methods for treating depression/PTSD. TMS is an FDA-approved procedure for treatment-resistant depression. The use of the stimulation in this current study is considered experimental. The purpose of this research study is to compare the effects of TMS at two different brain regions. This information will help the investigators to determine which treatment strategies provide the greatest clinical benefit to patients. Results of the study will provide brain and behavior measures for future work, which may be critical to developing effective disease markers and novel treatments for psychiatric conditions.

Cognitive Training Program for Individuals With Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Major Depressive DisorderPost-traumatic Stress Disorder

Individuals with affective disorders (including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD)) often experience declines in cognitive abilities such as memory and attention. Such difficulties can reduce functioning in important aspects of life, including at work or school. Little research has been conducted to investigate if cognitive dysfunction can be reduced in individuals with PTSD or MDD following a specific treatment. Thus, the investigators plan to determine the utility of a cognitive training program called goal management training (GMT) in reducing cognitive dysfunction in MDD/PTSD. GMT aims to assist participants in building skills in performing specific behaviours that rely on basic cognitive processes, allowing them to achieve an identified goal. 64 individuals with PTSD and 64 with MDD will be divided into two groups of 32, one GMT group, and one wait-list group that will receive GMT after study completion. The investigators predict that in comparison to the wait-list group, the GMT group will show greater improvements in cognitive functioning and everyday functioning following treatment and that these improvements will remain long-term.
