Use of Wearable Devices to Assess the Impact of Stress in Workers' Life Quality

Stress DisorderBurnout4 more

Introduction: Work stress has become more and more important in the last years as it affects both health and productivity of workers. In the last years, different wearables devices have started to be used to monitor stress at work to understand their consequences on daily life activity and sleep quality. Objective: to establish whether wearable wristbands are devices capable of determining the work stress level of workers from a research center in Galicia, for which different variables related to the work stress level and quality of life of these workers will be evaluated. Methods and analysis: The only inclusion criterion is to be a worker from a research center from Galicia. As for exclusion criteria, will not be allowed to participate those workers who are close to retirement ( <5 years), have health issues that hinder participation in the study, or present skin hypersensitivity or allergic reactions due to the materials the wristbands are made. This is a pilot study to determine the viability, sample size, cost, and duration of the study. This is an observational, analytic, and longitudinal study. In other words, in this study different variables from the population of interest will be observed and recorded without any direct intervention, so as to establish causality associations between these variables. It is considered as longitudinal since a six-months tracking of the variables will be performed. As for the statistical analysis, different tests will be performed to analyse the distribution, correlation, and association of the different features, as well as the significant differences between them at different points of the study (detailed below).

Investigating the Neurobiology of Tinnitus

TinnitusTraumatic Brain Injury1 more

The investigators hypothesize that individual differences exist in resting-state cortical attention, control, sensory, and emotion networks prior to noise exposure and these differences predispose some to the development of bothersome tinnitus. Furthermore, the investigators hypothesize that these changes in functional connectivity of these vulnerable systems after noise exposure are responsible for tinnitus. The proposed study will use a case-control cohort study design. Cases will be those soldiers who develop tinnitus and controls will be those who do not. This will be the first prospective study of tinnitus and will provide important information about the neurobiology of tinnitus. If a cortical neural network etiology for bothersome tinnitus is confirmed, it will be an astounding, powerful, paradigm shifting model for the diagnosis, prevention and, most importantly, treatment of tinnitus. Furthermore, if a battery of neurocognitive tests can identify soldiers at risk for the development of tinnitus then appropriate primary prevention strategies can be introduced. There are three Specific Aims to this project. Specific Aim 1. To determine if soldiers who develop tinnitus display pre-deployment differences in a set of physical, functional, cognitive, vulnerability, perpetuating factors, pre-deployment neurocognitive scores, or neuroimaging features compared to soldiers who do not develop tinnitus ("control group"). Specific Aim 2. To determine if particular scores on neurocognitive tests or neuroimaging features of functional/structural connectivity networks are associated with the development of tinnitus. Specific Aim 3. To identify a set of pre-deployment physical, functional, cognitive, vulnerability, and perpetuating factors, neurocognitive responses, and neuroimaging features that are associated with the development of tinnitus. The investigators plan to recruit 200 soldiers, between the ages of 18 and 30 years who do not have hearing loss or tinnitus and have never been deployed to military theater. The soldier participants will undergo a variety of tests before and after deployment, which will include a hearing test, neurocognitive tests (i.e., brain function tests), and a variety of novel radiologic imaging studies of the brain. One of these novel radiologic imaging studies is functional connectivity Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a proven methodology that monitors changes in brain activity and connections based on blood flow between different brain areas and levels of consumption of oxygen. This information is used to describe the condition of important neural networks responsible for such things as attention, mood, sensation, vision, hearing, and introspection or self-contemplation.

The Effect of Oxytocin on Fear Memory Consolidation Novel Intervention to Prevent Posttraumatic...

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

The purpose of the study is to learn how differences in learning under mildly-stressful circumstances may be changed by taking oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone made naturally in the body. The investigators will also examine the impact of any anxiety, depression, and stress related symptoms on learning processes.

Forgiveness-Based Writing to Prevent Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Operation Enduring...

Stress DisordersTraumatic2 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a forgiveness-based writing intervention in an open trial with 20 Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans who have recently experienced combat-related trauma to: Determine the feasibility of delivering the intervention. Evaluate the acceptability of the intervention. Collect preliminary outcome data on PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, anger, and forgiveness.

Posttraumatic Symptoms Among Toddlers and Their Parents Following Exposure to Terrorism

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

The project utilize experience and knowledge gained from previous early childhood projects in NYC post 9/11 and Sderot. The overall goals are: Identifying young children (under 6 years old) and their parents who are suffering from posttraumatic distress in the aftermath of the continuing conflict on Gaza border, Israel. Increasing the capacity of local institutions to treat toddlers and families at risk. Providing resilience -building services that strengthen the coping abilities of families and caregivers in response to continual terrorism.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Among VA Ambulatory Care Patients

PTSD

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in response to an extreme traumatic stressor. It is estimated that as many as 1 million VA patients who were exposed to combat may have PTSD. VA patients with PTSD recently have been designated as a Special Emphasis population for which health care resources are allocated at approximately 14 times those allocated to patients without such chronic, complex, and intensive health care needs (i.e., Basic Care groups). Despite recognition of its substantial impact upon VA resources, the extent and means by which PTSD affects health and health care use remain unclear. This study seeks to enhance understanding of both the extent and means by which PTSD affects the health and the health care use of patients in VA ambulatory care. To meet this goal, we build on an ongoing HSR&D project, the Veterans Health Study (VHS), a prospective longitudinal study of 2,425 VA ambulatory care patients.

Implementation of CPT for PTSD in Diverse Communities

Stress DisordersPost-Traumatic

Aim: To identify, assess, and address organizational context and provider-level barriers and facilitators of implementation of Evidence-based treatments (EBTs) using a mixed-methods approach in a diverse community mental health center (CMHC), Massachusetts General Hospital Chelsea Health Clinic (MGH Chelsea). Hypothesis: Anticipated barriers may include, but are not limited to, organizational climate, heavy case-loads, community mental health workers (CMHW) beliefs about EBTs, and provider motivation to learn EBT.

A Study of Brain Aging in Vietnam War Veterans

Traumatic Brain InjuryPost Traumatic Stress Disorder2 more

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common combat related problems and may be associated with a greater risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The purpose of this study is to examine the possible connections between TBI and PTSD, and the signs and symptoms of AD on Veterans as they age. The information collected will help to learn more about how these injuries may affect Veterans of the Vietnam War as they grow older, as well as Veterans of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, who also have these types of combat related injuries.
