Brief Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Victims of Mass Violence

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

The objective of this randomized control trial is to compare the effectiveness of Stress Inoculation Training (SIT), a well researched psychological treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), to that of the non-specific standard care provided in primary care settings, called Supportive Counseling (SC), on individuals who were exposed to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, or the immediate aftermath of this attack. Both SIT and SC interventions will each be provided in one 2-hour session with eight weeks of daily systematic web-based follow up to promote self-help. The primary hypothesis of this study is that SIT will reduce the level of PTSD in participants relative to SCand to the pre-treatment levels.

Videomusic and Psychic Trauma

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

This project is interested in the flow of consciousness and its modalizations during psychological trauma (post-traumatic stress disorder) and its resolution. It is based on the premise that in PTSD, consciousness becomes more rigid, less fluid, due to the memory always imposing itself on the consciousness. The resolution of the trauma and the subsequent reduction of anxiety might improve the fluidity of consciousness and thus lead to an overall improvement in the psychological state of PTSD patients. In cases of PTSD, music has been shown to reduce anxiety from the very first session and has a very positive effect on all PTSD symptoms. In this project the following elements will be evaluated : on one hand, the changes in consciousness and its fluidity and, on the other hand, the evolution of anxiety following the listening of a new kind of work, videomusic (which associates a video scenario with music) exemplifying (metaphorizing) the trauma and its resolution.

Mindful Attention Training Workshop for Firefighters

Post Traumatic Stress DisorderMindfulness3 more

The overarching goal of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of Mindful Attention Training (MAT), a novel mindfulness-based intervention that is specifically developed for firefighters. This project is designed to improve the health of firefighters, an integral, essential component of our national and international communities. Moreover, the study aims to promote health service psychologists by enhancing our contributions to the mental healthcare of firefighters, an understudied and underserved segment of the population by virtue of their service to our communities. This study therefore has significant potential to identify, develop, and promote an effective model of quality, evidence-based mental health promotion and illness prevention by integrating health service psychology into the fire service.

The Efficacy of a Herbal Supplement in the Prevention of PTSD

PTSDPost Traumatic Stress Disorder3 more

Psycho-traumatic disorders are a disabling condition whose epidemiological data vary according to the country but also the populations studied and the measuring instruments used. The estimated prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) appeared to be increasing in recent years, and this appears to be due, among other things, to the improvement of the standardized evaluation procedure. The survey "Mental Health in General Population", conducted in metropolitan France between 1999 and 2003 on more than 36,000 people estimated its instantaneous prevalence (last month) of a full PTSD was 0.7% in the SMPG overall sample, with almost equal frequency between men (45%) and women (55%). This figure is close to that reported in a European population for the ESEMeD study. A very significant psychiatric comorbidity was found in subjects with PTSD, particularly with mood disorders, other anxiety disorders and addictive behaviors. The link with the suicidal risk was clearly established, which is the gravity of this pathology. The most important publications are made by American teams who have identified and evaluated the treatment of this pathology among veterans of the various wars led by the country.

Swiss TrAumatic biRth Trial

Posttraumatic Stress DisorderAcute Stress Disorder

This randomized controlled study aims to investigate the effects of a brief computerized intervention (the computer game "Tetris") on intrusive memories and other posttraumatic stress symptoms following an emergency cesarean section (ECS). Women who have undergone an emergency cesarian section will be randomly allocated to either the brief computerized intervention plus usual care or an attention placebo control group plus usual care within the first 6 hours following the ECS. Women and their infants will be followed up at ≤ 1 week postpartum, 6 weeks postpartum, and 6 months postpartum. It is predicted that women given the brief computerized intervention will develop fewer intrusive memories and less posttraumatic stress symptoms than those who are not. This will inform the development of a simple computerized early intervention to prevent distressing psychological symptoms after a traumatic event, such as an ECS.
