Evaluation of a Web Application That Supports Behavior Change in Work Related Stress
Psychologic StressOccupation-Related Stress Disorder1 moreA randomized controlled trial is needed to strengthen the evidence in the area of web-based self-management programs for stress-reduction. Aim The aim for the study is to compare the effects of the web-application that supports behavior change in stress-management to a waiting list group in persons with perceived stress. Method This study will have the design of a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The CONSORT guidelines will be used for reporting the study. Sample: Different sectors in the region will be included. Three different high-schools in Västerås City, social services authority in Västerås municipality, a large private company in the region, three different clinics within the county council and the municipality of Köping have signed the attestation of participation. Intervention: The intervention is the program for web-based stress self-management My Stress Control. Procedure: After informed consent the participants will, during approximately 2-4 months by their own go through the web-based program for stress self-management. The waiting-list group will also get access to My Stress Control after post-measurements. Data-analysis: Descriptive statistics will be used for demographic data. Missing data will be replaced as recommended for the different measurements included, commonly by using the mean for responded items within the sub scale. Inferential analyses will be conducted by using multivariate statistical analysis. Drop-out analysis will be conducted by comparing pre-interventions measures for those who completed the program with those who did not.

Chronic PainDepressive Symptoms3 moreThis study is a randomized controlled trial studying the efficacy of an iCBT treatment for patients with chronic pain and comorbid psychiatric distress. Half the participants will receive treatment at first, while the other half serve as a control group. After the first group has received treatment, the same program will be offered to participants in the control group. Treatment will be tailored on the level of individual participants, enabling individuals suffering a wide range of problems to be recruited. The treatment will consist of a 10-week guided self-help program, followed by a booster program and follow-up one year later. During the curse of the treatment the participants will be guided via text communication by a licensed psychologist or a candidate psychologist on their last year of studies. The primary hypothesis is that an individually tailored CBT-treatment administered through the internet can be beneficial for patients suffering from chronic pain and comorbid psychiatric distress. The investigators expect that patients in the treatment group will show reduced levels of disability, depression and anxiety, while improving on scales measuring coping and quality of life.

StressPsychological2 moreThe purpose of the current study is to test the efficacy of two brief, behavioral interventions intended to improve burnout among doctoral-level graduate students (n = 102). Specifically, individuals will be randomly assigned to one of three intervention conditions: 1) Reward: a brief intervention to help participants increase engagement in healthy and rewarding values-driven behaviors, 2) Approach: a brief intervention to help participants identify and decrease emotion-driven avoidance of important goals, or 3) Control: a control condition that involves monitoring only. Multilevel modeling will be used to assess changes in burnout, mood, and stress, following the interventions, controlling for participants' individual baseline levels of these variables.
Investigation of Different Relaxation Techniques in Eliciting a Relaxation Response
StressPsychologicalWhile the stress response, characterised by an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol, has evolved to ensure the survival of the organism in face of danger, chronic stress due to psychological stressors can be harmful. The opposite of the stress response is the "relaxation response". Mind-body techniques such as meditation, guided imagery and music therapy are thought to induce this response. The relaxation response is characterized as a wakeful hypometabolic state, where a decrease in central nervous system arousal is observed. Some studies reported a reduction in stress hormones, and in symptoms of anxiety and depression following the use of mind-body relaxation techniques. Other studies noted a reduction in stress measured using physiological measurements such as heart rate and blood pressure. Light therapy is another technique that is suggested to induce physiological changes similar to those seen in the relaxation response. Some studies have shown a reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production following exposure to blue light. These relaxation therapies can be useful for the general population and for vulnerable groups where alternative therapies, such as medication and psychotherapy, are difficult. Limited amount of studies have quantified the decrease in stress in physiological measurements such as heart rate and blood pressure. The aim of this study is to investigate which relaxation technique among five different interventions (and one control) is the most effective in improving relaxation and reducing stress in adult women of reproductive age (18-45 years). The results of this study will be used to inform the intervention of a study testing the impact of relaxation therapy on breastfeeding outcomes in mothers of late preterm infants.

It has the capability of reducing the risk of short term and long term problems for the infant, such as gastroenteritis, respiratory infections, type II diabetes and obesity, and of providing benefits for neurodevelopment. Breast milk offers even greater benefits for preterm infants. Some of the advantages of breastfeeding are related to the constituents of breast milk such as the macronutrients and bioactive factors, the hormones associated with breastfeeding such as oxytocin, and the behavioural aspects of breastfeeding (maternal sensitivity to infant cues). Despite these advantages, breastfeeding rates are below target levels mainly due to the challenges that women face that hinder breastfeeding success. Interventions aimed at improving policies, practices, and maternal support have been developed. However, other interventions that target specific modifiable barriers to breastfeeding can be useful. The aim of this study is to investigate a simple support intervention for breastfeeding mothers of late preterm and early term infants on maternal stress reduction and infant weight gain. The investigators also aim to study the potential mechanisms by which this effect could be achieved (breast milk composition and volume, mother and infant behaviour).

Online Wellness Intervention in Medical Students
StressPsychological2 moreMedical students are at high risk of stress. This project will test how well a 12-week stress reduction program works to reduce stress, anxiety and depression and improve well-being. The program is delivered online and each week is made of an introduction video, 7-8 minutes of yoga, 5-7 minutes of meditation and nutrition tips. At the beginning and the end of the 12-week research study, we will be using surveys to ask students about their stress, anxiety, depression, sense of control over their own life, quality of life, and pain levels. After the program, the research team will conduct interviews with the medical student to allow them to share their other feedback about the program. The researchers will also send surveys to the medical students one month after the program ends to asses their continued satisfaction with and adherence to the program.
