The subjects in the treatment group follows a 12 week standard PFMT program, while the control group is not given specific treatment of their LUTS but like the treatment group follows the standard rehabilitation program for stroke patient. Extension of the MIME Robotic System for Stroke Rehabilitation
StrokeImpaired Upper Extremity FunctionThe goal of this project is to develop and test a new robotic system to accommodate practice of tasks requiring reach, grasp and release of objects. Our previous work has shown that the MIME robot is safe and effective for improving reach in stroke subjects. But adequate control of hand movements is critical to a functional upper limb, and is often resistant to conventional therapeutic interventions. Many stroke survivors have residual ability to flex the fingers, but extension is often limited and impeded by increased passive stiffness in flexors, abnormal levels of increased tone in flexors and weakness in extensors. In a recent study, 38% of stroke survivors reported that impaired hand function was the most disabling motor impairment they faced.

Arm Rehabilitation Study After Stroke

The investigators are testing an experimental arm therapy called Accelerated Skill Acquisition Program (ASAP) which combines challenging, intensive and meaningful practice of tasks of the participant's choice compared to two standard types of therapy (usual and customary arm therapy totaling 30 hours and usual and customary arm therapy for a duration indicated on the therapy prescription). A second objective is to characterize current outpatient arm therapy (dosage & content) following stroke for individuals who are eligible for ICARE. Eligible candidates must have had a stroke affecting an arm within the last 106 days.

tDCS and Physical Therapy in Stroke
Cerebrovascular AccidentThe purpose of this study is to determine whether a painless and noninvasive procedure called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with a method of physical therapy called constraint-induced movement therapy improves motor function in patients with chronic stroke. Research in healthy subjects has shown that when tDCS is combined with motor learning tasks, there is an increase in learning as compared to motor learning tasks only. The tDCS procedure sessions will be compared to sham (fake) procedure sessions, which is also called placebo stimulation. This study is double blind, which means neither the subjects nor researchers analyzing motor function will know if participants are receiving real tDCS stimulation or placebo. Only the person performing the procedure will know which one participants are receiving. Only by comparing the tDCS procedure to a sham (placebo) procedure can we understand if the tDCS actually improves motor function. We hypothesize that tDCS will enhance the effects of constraint-induced movement therapy on motor recovery in chronic stroke patients.
