Mobile Support to Improve Recovery and Treatment Court Outcomes
Substance UseThis study will fully develop and implement an interactive text messaging intervention system for individuals sentenced to DTC. Upon completion of programming and testing of messages the investigators will enroll 40 participants and randomize participant to a control condition (TAU Group) or the intervention condition (TXS Group). Assessments will occur at enrollment, and day 30 follow up.
Assessment of Severity and Outcome of Addicted Cases.
AddictionSubstanceAddiction to drugs and alcohol is increasingly becoming a worldwide trend that is prevalent in both rich and poor countries . Substance abuse shows a significant warming to the health, social and economic build of families, communities and nations. Extent of worldwide psychoactive substance use is estimated at 2 billion alcohol users and 185 million drug users . Substance abuse (including alcohol and drugs) is an important risk factor for poor health globally due to their intoxicating effects or their toxic effects on organs and tissues that lead to the development of diseases, injuries and other health conditions Drug abuse is associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. A study on the need for hospitalization in approximately 4800 drug users found that 223 of these were admitted to hospital due to cardiovascular diseases . The majority of abused substances or their metabolites are excreted through the kidneys and renal complications of drug abuse are very common .The involvement of the kidney due to drug abuse is either attributed to their elimination through the kidney, or a direct nephrotoxic effect. The damage may be acute and reversible, or chronic and can leads to end stage renal failure . Addiction is responsible for different types of liver diseases including fatty liver, hepatitis and liver failure. . Intravenous drug addiction by sharing of contaminated needle is very important risk factor for the development of liver diseases, particularly hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Globally, 90% of new hepatitis C infections are attributed to drug injection . In the long run, substance abuse has negative effects on sexual functions and leads to the onset of sexual disorders. . Long term use of alcohol was reported to inhibit of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and reduces the release of gonadotropins from the pituitary . Morphine administration suppresses LH release and reduces the levels of testosterone, which affects testicular function.
Brain Imaging in Early Psychosis
Mental Health Issue (E.G.Depression3 moreThis study assesses brain connectivity and function of individuals ages 13-25 at a prodromal or early stage of a psychotic disorder. Participation involves approximately 3 hours of MRI scanning and up to 6 hours of behavioral testing at Washington University School of Medicine's campus.
Reverse Innovation and Patient Engagement to Improve Quality of Care and Patient Outcomes
DiabetesCardiovascular Disease2 moreProject CONNECT ("Community-based Organizations Neighborhood Network: Enhancing Capacity Together") is a randomized controlled trial that involves 22 community-based organizations (CBOs) located in Baltimore, MD. Half of these organizations were randomly assigned to the intervention group using a constrained cluster randomization process. The remaining 11 are a part of the control intervention group. The intervention is a co-developed set of IT tools hypothesized to improve the connections among intervention CBOs, Johns Hopkins health care facilities and CBO clients.
Brain Imaging Studies of the Effects of Cocaine Abstinence
Substance Abuse DisorderThis study evaluates theories regarding cocaine abstinence which propose that increased presynaptic and postsynaptic dopamine activity and increased serotonin activity are associated with abstinence in cocaine dependent subjects at the beginning and three to six months after a treatment program. We are using positron emission tomography (PET), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in cortical and subcortical areas in a series of brain imaging studies testing these theories of abnormalities in the dopamine and serotonin system for cocaine addiction by examining the distribution of 18F-fallypride, 18F-altanserin, and FDG. We are evaluating genetic theories associated with cocaine addiction through the examination of genetic markers and functional genomics.
Ambulance Calls for Substance Use and Alcohol in a Pandemic (ASAP)
Alcohol UseUnspecified5 moreThe Primary objective is to explore ambulance service attendance at incidents involving alcohol and/or substance use over the period of the pandemic lockdown, and the following months. This will be to determine prevalence and explore factors such as patient gender, age, ethnicity or location. Analysis will examine the calls over the course of the year prior to the lockdown, and then compare this to the period of lockdown and following months.
Surveillance Monitoring of Opioid Abuse in Poison and Drug Treatment Centers
Opioid-related DisordersOpioid Addiction2 moreTo conduct surveillance for abuse, misuse, overdose, addiction, and death and to evaluate if the REMS meets its surveillance goals, and if it does not, to modify it appropriately based on the metrics. Briefly, therefore, the overall surveillance objective is to evaluate for trends before and after the shared REMS is implemented to collectively assess for changes in abuse, misuse, overdose, addiction, and death for different risk groups and settings.
Recovery - a Collaborative Project
Mental Health ImpairmentSubstance AbuseIn Norway, official guidelines and policies state that recovery oriented services in the field of mental health and substance abuse services is a desirable goal. This collaborative research project aims to provide in-depth knowledge of how recovery oriented practices and collaboration in the mental health and substance abuse services in the municipality of New Drammen develop over a three-year period. Using qualitative methods, the main aim of the study is to explore what recovery orientation of services in mental health and substance abuse presupposes and involves related to roles, collaboration and knowledge. To explore these issues, service users will be interviewed together with their primary mental health professional. The study will also apply observational fieldwork in order to observe recovery oriented practices between service users and professionals and between professionals. An advisory group consisting of people with background as service users, mental health clinicians and service leaders will contribute throughout the project. .
Massive Mental Health Screening Using Smartphones in 24 Pre-graduate Education Centers in Mexico...
Suicidal IdeationSocial Behavior5 moreThe objective of this study is to make a massive suicide risk and social behavior assessment in 24 pre-graduate education centers in Mexico City (approximately 30,000 students aged between 15 and 22 years), taking also into account other outcomes such as depression, anxiety, alcohol and drugs. For this, an app for Smartphone (MeMind) or a web platform (www.MeMind.net) will be used in which the participants will take a self-administered questionnaire, composed of several psychometric instruments. Our main hypothesis is that identification of suicide risk in the Mexico City's student community is feasible using their own smartphones and can serve as both a population screening tool for early specialist referral, as well as a tool for evaluating social behavior strategies and their relation to suicide behavior.
Monitoring Patterns of Prescribing to Identify Changes in Access to ER/LA Opioid Analgesics
Opioid Related DisordersOpiate Addiction2 moreChanges in prescribing will be compared in prescribers from specialties whose prescribing is hypothesized to be relatively unaffected by the REMS (such as oncologists and hospice providers) versus those for whom the REMS could have greater impact on prescribing (e.g., dentists). Trends and changes in monthly prescription volume and average monthly prescription volume will be evaluated by prescriber specialty.
