Neuroimaging and CBD for Opiod Use Disorder

Heroin AbuseOpioid Use Disorder2 more

The investigators propose an imaging study to investigate the neurobiological effects of CBD (vs placebo) in participants with opioid use disorder who are maintained on methadone. The purpose of the study is to determine the neural circuits and transmitters associated with the effects of CBD on to reduce craving and anxiety. The neuroimaging will be conducted in participants immediately following their first administration of CBD (800mg or placebo) and one week after the last administration (3 daily doses). This CBD administration protocol was shown in previous studies by the investigators to reduce craving and anxiety in abstinent heroin users.

CRP and S&A for Inpatient Veterans

AlcoholismSubstance-related Disorders1 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how well three types of treatments work to improve the outcomes for people with substance use problems. Veterans admitted to the Charleston VA Psychiatric inpatient unit may be invited to participate. The three types of treatments that will be evaluated are: Combined Recovery Program (CRP), a six-session treatment group delivered on the inpatient unit. A Home Telehealth program, called Stable and Able (S&A), provided just prior to discharge and provides additional support for up to 3 months Treatment-as-usual (TAU), which is the treatment currently provided on the unit, consisting of various mental health topics and sessions designed to help with recovery. Participation begins on the inpatient unit, beginning with CRP and/or TAU, and may continue with S&A post discharge. Participants will be followed up at 1 and 3- months post treatment.

Exercise Training as Medicine for Substance Use Disorder Patients

Substance Use Disorders

This study compares the effects of high dose and low dose, high intensity, endurance training and strength training in substance use disorder patients. The hypothesis is that the increase in endurance (measured as maximal oxygen uptake) and strength (measured as maximal strength) will be similar in both the high dose and low dose training groups after 24 training sessions over eight weeks. The rationale for this assumption is based on the patient groups poor physical capacity, supporting that a lesser physical workload is needed to achieve a substantial increase in physical capacity. The practical implication could be higher training attendance, because it is likely easier to motivate the patient group when they only have to perform half the workload. It is paramount for this patient group to increase their physical capacity and consequently augment their physical health status since they are in a high-risk group for developing life-threatening lifestyle related diseases.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Opioid Use Disorder: A Manualized Pilot Study

Opioid Use Disorder

The goal of this pilot clinical trial is to test the feasibility of a 12-week manualized cognitive-behavioral therapy treatment for opioid use disorder in reducing or stopping illicit opioid use in a community setting. Participants will complete 12 weeks of therapy with a behavioral health counselor and will complete assessments at baseline and 12 weeks. Other outcomes include changes in mood and perceptions of recovery-related support after 12 weeks of therapy.

Targeting Drug Memories With Methylphenidate

Substance Use DisorderCocaine Use Disorder

This study aims to identify the neural, behavioral, and pharmacological mechanisms promoting diminished expression of drug-related memories in human drug addiction. In this fMRI study with a within-subjects placebo-controlled double-blind cross-over design, oral methylphenidate (20 mg) or placebo will be administered to individuals with cocaine use disorders (CUD) to peak during the retrieval of a drug-cue memory before extinction; in addition to fMRI activations, skin conductance responses (SCR, acquired simultaneously) will serve as the psychophysiological indicators of memory modification. Assessments of interference with the return of drug-cue memories via SCR and craving will be conducted the day following MRI. This pharmocologically-enhanced behavioral approach to decreasing drug memories and craving in iCUD could ultimately be used to develop effective cue-exposure therapies for drug addiction. Procedures include MRI, blood draw, questionnaires and interviews, skin conductance response measures, and behavioral tasks.

Phase Ib/2a Drug-drug Interaction Study of a Combination of 45mg Dextromethorphan With 105 mg Bupropion...

AddictionOpioid Use2 more

The overall goal of this project is to collect initial human data on the effects of novel compounds on safety (interactions with an opioid drug, e.g., buprenorphine) and early efficacy signals (subjective effects on negative affect, craving, and opioid withdrawal) in OUD subjects currently in MOUD treatment with buprenorphine.

Electronic Cigarettes as a Harm Reduction Strategy in Individuals With Substance Use Disorder

Cigarette SmokingAddiction1 more

Patients in addiction treatment have exceptionally higher rate of cigarette smoking and very low quit rates compared to the general population. The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of using e-cigarettes as a method for harm reduction and the effects of providing e-cigarettes (or placebo e-cigarettes) on smoking outcomes among patients in addiction treatment.

Smoking Reduction In Gravid Substance Use Disorders

Tobacco Smoking in Mother Complicating PregnancyTobacco Use Disorder1 more

The aim of this study is to encourage smoking cessation in women with substance use disorders by providing knowledge of expired carbon monoxide. We hypothesize that women who are provided knowledge of their expired carbon monoxide and the associated percent fetal carboxyhemoglobin will have a greater success at quitting smoking during pregnancy than women who are not provided this information. A secondary aim of the study is to correlate expired carbon monoxide throughout pregnancy with infant birth weight.
