Wakȟáŋyeža (Little Holy One)
SuicideTrauma2 moreThe overall goal of this study is to develop, adapt and evaluate an intergenerational prevention intervention, named "Wakȟáŋyeža (Little Holy One)," with Native American caregivers on a Northern Plains reservation and the caregivers' 3-to-5-year-old children. The intervention aims to: 1) reduce symptoms of historical trauma and everyday stress among parents/caregivers, 2) improve parenting, and 3) improve children's emotional and behavioral developmental outcomes to reduce future risk for suicide and substance use.
"Safety in Dementia": An Online Caregiver Intervention
CaregiversDecision Making4 moreIn an online randomized trial of Safety in Dementia with national recruitment and longitudinal follow-up, we will recruit informal caregivers of community-dwelling adults with dementia who have firearm access.
Addressing Nocturnal Sleep/Wake Effects on Risk of Suicide in Older Adults
Sleep Initiation and Maintenance DisordersSuicidal IdeationSuicide is a leading cause of death in the US, and insomnia is a risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. In older adults, suicide is associated with impaired cognitive functioning, and insomnia, which is more prevalent in older adults, is also linked to disrupted cognition. However, there is limited evidence on whether treatment of insomnia can improve suicidal ideation (with or without improving cognition), and no evidence specifically in older adults. Additionally, no studies have investigated digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) in this populations. Consequently, this study will help inform future study designs and provide preliminary data on whether dCBT-I is effective for suicidal thinking in older adults.
Mitigating Suicide Risk With Single Session 'Brief Skills for Safer Living'
Suicidal IdeationSuicide2 moreMental health concerns have been on the rise since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has worsened risk factors for suicide, including job loss, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Timely and easy access to mental health services is a dire need, and this study will test the efficacy and feasibility of a brief clinical intervention, Brief Skills for Safer Living (Brief-SfSL), at reducing suicide risk. The goal of this study is to investigate whether Brief-SfSL, delivered online, is a suitable, acceptable and effective method for reducing suicide risk and providing timely mental health services. The results from this study will provide vital insight into effective interventions for suicide risk that are accessible and can be widely distributed.
Evaluation of a Gatekeeper Training for Pharmacists
SuicideThis study aims to investigate to what extent a gatekeeper training (e-learning) for pharmacists and PTA is effective in changing the attitudes, knowledge, and self-efficacy. Moreover, it aims to examine how they evaluate the training and whether they were able to apply the learned skills in practice.
Targeting Adolescent Insomnia to Lessen Overall Risk of Suicidal Behavior
InsomniaSuicidal Ideation2 moreThis study will test the effectiveness of a sleep-related primary suicide prevention program entitled TAILOR (Targeting Adolescent Insomnia to Lessen Overall Risk of Suicidal Behavior), which includes specific behavior-change strategies for adolescents at risk of suicidal behavior who suffer from difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, and/or insufficient sleep.
Trial of a Brief Psychological Intervention for Suicidal Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder...
Borderline Personality DisorderSuicide and Self-harmWhen in crisis, people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently seek care in emergency departments (EDs) often presenting with suicide and self-harm behaviour. There is no established evidence-based brief intervention for patients with BPD in ED settings, however a 4-session psychotherapeutic intervention for people with personality disorders in ED settings was tested in Australia and showed promising results in reduced health care utilization. The proposed pilot randomized controlled trial will assess the feasibility of delivering this 4-session intervention in the ED for people with BPD who present with suicidal ideation or self-harm with the aim of reducing health care utilization.
SAFETY-A for Promoting Equity in Suicide Prevention Outcomes in Schools
Suicidal IdeationThis study will adapt Safe Alternatives For Teens and Youth - Acute (SAFETY-A) for implementation in low-resourced school districts to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in mental health service use (MHS) following identification of suicide risk in youth. SAFETY-A will be adapted to fit the organizational context of school districts and to reduce mistrust of MHS, internalized stigma, and concealment of youth emotional distress that arise in school suicide risk assessments with Asian American and Latinx students. Following a prototyping case series, a feasibility trial will assign four districts to the timing of SAFETY-A implementation to generate preliminary data on feasibility and impacts on proposed mechanisms and youth MHS utilization and clinical outcomes across racial/ethnic groups.
Cyclical Neuroactive Steroid Changes, Arousal, and Proximal Suicide Risk: An Experimental Approach...
Suicidal IdeationFemale suicide attempts occur more often in the weeks before and after menses onset, and have been linked to ovarian hormone withdrawal. The proposed project will use a two-week intervention to stabilize hormones in females with recent suicidal thoughts; this paradigm is a safe way to learn how cyclical changes in hormones and their metabolites influence short-term risk of suicide. The data acquired will contribute to our understanding of the biology of acute suicide risk and advance efforts to develop safe and effective treatments that eliminate predictable monthly worsening of suicide risk in reproductive-age females.
Nurse Suicide: Physiologic Sleep Health Promotion Trial
SuicideNurse's Role4 moreThe purpose of this study is to identify factors (sleep, psychiatric characteristics, stressful life events, and work environment characteristics) that potentiate or mitigate adverse effects of real-world stressors that predispose nurses to suicidal risk. The specific aims are: Aim 1. To investigate associations between sleep, stressful life events (life stressors, discrimination, lateral violence), psychiatric characteristics (psychiatric diagnosis, subjective mood), work environment characteristics (workload, shift type and duration, overtime, nurse work environment, and team relations) and stress (self-report and heart rate variability) in working nursing professionals while controlling for standard covariates known to influence stress. Aim 2. To determine if stress exposure (self-report and HRV) is associated with predisposing factors (sleep, stressful life events, additional psychiatric characteristics, and work environment characteristics), and to explore whether stress mediates the effect of predisposing factors on suicidal ideation in working nursing professionals. Exploratory Aim. To explore the preliminary impact of an existing sleep intervention (sleep health promotion kit) on self-reported stress, HRV, sleep, and psychiatric health outcomes including depression, burnout, and suicidal ideation.
