Evaluation of Cognitive Function in a Suicidal Crisis

Suicide

The aftermath of suicide is devastating, being the cause of 800 000 deaths every year worldwide. In France, suicide still causes about 10 000 deaths per year and the number of suicide attempts (SA) is estimated between 170 000 and 200 000 per year (InVS). It is often thought that a suicidal crisis is only related to depression, as it actually is a far more complex phenomenon. A suicidal crisis can occur on various grounds like psychiatric disorders but also contextual events or somatic diseases and it has been hypothesized that suicidal ideas or inclinations could have a common and independent cognitive origin

Case Control Psychological Autopsy of Suicide

SuicideFatal Suicide1 more

Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, and identifying risk factors has been considered as the key initiative of suicide prevention. Considering that, the study aimed to explore the factors leading towards suicide in Pakistan through Case-Control Psychological Autopsy of Suicide. Also, the study aimed to Translate, Adapt and Validate American Association of Suicidology (AAS) Semi-Structured Interview for Psychological Autopsy (Generic Version, 2018).

Evaluation of the Links Between Sleep Disorders and the Risk of Suicide Attempt

Attempted Suicide

Several studies have demonstrated an association between sleep disorders such as insomnia and nightmares to suicidal ideations and behaviors. Nevertheless, some of these studies are methodologically questionable especially in the exploration of sleep disorders. Furthermore, confounding factors such as depressive symptomatology are not controlled and the measurement of suicidal behavior has often been taken into account as a historical measure, not as a current event, which introduces uncertainties and a lack of precision regarding the temporality of the phenomena. Today, while the links between sleep disorders and suicidal risk are well known, we have a lack of information on the importance and the role of sleep disorders as a precipitating factor. Indeed, few studies have evaluated the temporal link between sleep disorders and suicidal acts. The objective of this study is to evaluate the links between acute and chronic sleep disorders and the risk of suicide attempt

Attempted Suicide With Acetaminophen Among 8-18 Year-old Children / Adolescents in Denmark

Hepatic Injury

A: Early predictors of hepatic injury after suicide attempt with acetaminophen: To explore the following in a pediatric population with acetaminophen overdose due to suicide attempt: 1) the prevalence of episodes of pre- and in-hospital vomiting and the relationship between the total number of vomiting episodes and hepatic injury, 2) the relevance of the early initiation of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) treatment to hepatic injury, and 3) the presence/absence of illness prior to the suicide attempt and hepatic injury. B: Characteristics, social behaviour, trends and risk factors: 1. To explore the relationship between children admitted to a paediatric department as a result of suicide attempts with acetaminophen and their parents and friends. 2. To determine the extent to which the children had attempted to speak to their parents or other adults about their problems before their suicide attempts. 3. To determine the prevalence of self-mutilation among children with suicidal behaviour. 4. To examine the reasons for these suicide attempts. C: Establishment of the expression of cytochrome P450 in a pediatric including the age-adjusted activities. Urine samples will be analyzed using an HPLC tandem mass spectrometric method, which we have already established in our lab. There will be categorized three groups for comparison: An age-appropriate background population (approximately 200 patients) Paediatric patients that have been admitted to Rigshospitalet, due to severe hepatic injury (approximately 50 patients) Other pediatric patients admitted to their local hospital because of acetaminophen poisoning (approximately 200 patients) A control urine sample will be analyzed three months after the suicide attempt.

REACH VET Program Evaluation

Suicide

The VA's Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention is implementing an new program to increase suicide prevention outreach for Veterans at highest risk for suicide. Using a statistical model, REACH VET, short for Recovery Engagement and Coordination for Health - Veterans Enhanced Treatment, uses information from Veterans' health records to identify those who are at a higher risk for suicide, hospitalization, illness, or other negative outcomes. Once a Veteran is identified, his or her VA mental health or primary care provider reaches out to check on the Veteran's well-being and review their treatment plan to determine if enhanced care is needed. The goal of the proposed study is to evaluate the implementation of this program in collaboration with the Partnered Evidence-based Policy Resource Center (PEPReC). The objectives of this evaluation are to evaluate how well this program is put into place using a strategy called virtual external facilitation, and to collect data about the cost of the program and the strategy.

Paternal Involvement in Psychiatric Care of Adolescents Managed for Depression or Suicide Attempt...

Psychiatric DisorderDepression3 more

Parental involvement, both quantitative and qualitative, is fundamental for a good psycho-emotional development of the child. The lack of parental involvement and especially paternal involvement significantly promotes the occurrence of behavioral disorders in children and later, in adolescence, the onset of depressive symptomatology. On the other hand, parental involvement has a protective role in the occurrence of behavioral disorders and decreases the risk of suicide attempts in adolescence. The authors of these cohort studies agree on the need for research on the identification of factors determining paternal involvement in order to organize specific prevention actions and targeted interventions to promote the involvement of fathers in psychiatric care of their adolescents. The prevention of adolescent suicide attempts appears to be a real public health issue in Reunion Island with a suicide rate among under-35s twice as high as in Reunion than in metropolitan France. This work is a continuation of the guidelines of good practice of the High Authority of Health (HAS) which insist on the importance of "supporting the parental function by health and public action".

Social Media Markers of Adolescents' Suicide Hazard

Adolescent Suicidality

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for teenage youth in Canada, and every year tens of thousands of young people engage in suicidal behaviors. Many young people manifest red-flag behaviors in the digital realm before these incidents occur. The faceless nature of online communication often emboldens youth to reveal details about their mental state: leaving tell-tale signs or "bread crumbs" of their suicidal intentions or behaviors. This research will examine the content of adolescents social media entries to find red flags and detect patterns in social media interactions of adolescents that could be predictive of subsequent suicide risk. The study participants will be patients admitted to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Emergency unit at BCCH, subdivided into two groups: those admitted due to suicidal behaviors, and those admitted for non-suicidal behaviors. The text of social media activity for the month prior to emergency admission of the two groups will be collected, anonymized, and analyzed using text-analytic algorithms. The objective of the study is to find patterns and indicators of social media entries, prior to admission, that would have been predictive of suicidality. The implications of successful outcome of this project for mental health care of children and adolescents reaches well beyond the scope of this study. An objective method to predict risk of suicidal behaviors in youth has application in almost all pediatric clinical settings. The outcomes of this project will also serve as the foundation for further utilization of social sensing technology to identify, predict, and prevent many other mental health crises in children and adolescents.

The Meaning of Suicidality for Older Persons With Suicidal Tendencies and Their Families

SuicideAged1 more

The purpose of the proposed study is to examine the phenomenon of suicidality in old age and its unique characteristics. This will be performed through observing the multigenerational aging family from the life-course perspective, which enables the researchers to address life transitions, including crises leading to suicidal tendencies.
