DBT Skills Groups for Veterans at High Risk for Suicide Attempt

Veteran suicide death is a national crisis. Risk factors include emotion dysregulation, which occurs across mental health disorders. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based suicide intervention that targets emotion dysregulation but is resource-intensive and not widely available at VHA. A more efficient evidence-based DBT Skills Group (DBT-SG) is associated with reduced suicidal ideation and emotion dysregulation and likely more feasible to implement at VHA. This is a randomized controlled trial to test whether DBT-SG in addition to VHA treatment-as-usual, compared to only VHA treatment-as-usual, reduces Veteran suicide attempt.

To address the critical need in crisis intervention for children and adolescents at suicidal risk the investigators developed an ultra-brief acute crisis intervention, based on Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). The current adaptation of IPT-A is comprised of five weekly sessions, followed by monthly follow-up caring email contacts to the patients and their parents, over a period of three months.

Study 1: Social Engage Coaching R61 Phase

The purpose of this study is to test whether an individual coaching program called Social Engage Coaching (or 'Engage Coaching' for short) helps adults age 60 and older feel more connected to other people in ways that matter to them. Procedures include participating in a Social Engage Coaching program, research assessments with surveys, and assessments completed on a cell phone. Engage Coaching involves individual sessions with a trained Engage Coach (up to 10 sessions) that are designed to help participants improve social relationships and well-being. All subjects will receive the scheduled baseline and follow-up interviews by the research team. These interviews will be conducted at study start, mid-way through the program at 8 weeks and after completing the program at 16 weeks. Interviews will be via Zoom/phone as well as surveys done online.

The goal of this 2-arm cluster randomized clinical trial is to test whether an evidence-based staff training and coaching model specifically designed as a response to legal system-involved youths' and frontline staff's mental health needs can improve the safety and suicide outcomes, mental health challenges, and wellness and facility climate for youth and staff in facilities assigned to the intervention condition. Staff in facilities assigned to the intervention are eligible to receive evidence-based programming in suicide detection and prevention (Shield of Care; SOC) and wellness skill-building (Skills for Life) through training and personalized coaching. Multiple training sessions will be offered to small groups of staff in-person in residential facilities and paired with personalized in-person and virtual coaching. Staff and youth in all facilities will be asked to complete periodic surveys assessing experiences in the facility, suicide and safety knowledge and risk, and their mental health and wellness. Researchers will compare outcomes of staff in youth in facilities assigned to the intervention compared to facilities in the training-as-usual condition.

The overall purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of an intervention designed to prevent nurse suicide. This randomized controlled trial will test the Healer Education Assessment and Referral (HEAR) program alone and the HEAR program combined with a program called MINDBODYSTRONG. The HEAR program is a method of screening to detect clinicians at moderate to high risk for suicide and referring them for treatment through an encrypted anonymous on-line platform. MINDBODYSTRONG© is an adaptation of a well-tested cognitive-behavioral skills building intervention (also known as COPE in the literature) that provides a cognitive-behavior theory-based approach to decrease depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation and improve healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviors in at-risk populations. MINDBODYSTRONG© will involve eight self-paced computerized sessions designed specifically for nurses and clinicians. Nurses will be recruited nationally through the American Nurses Association.

Developing an Intervention to Promote Lethal Means Safety in Suicidal Adolescents

Study Objective: to develop a phone-based intervention to aid parents of suicidal adolescents to adhere to lethal means safety. Lethal means counseling is the practice of educating patients and their families about limiting access to items that can be used to attempt suicide. Though lethal means counseling is standard practice in treating suicidal patients, there is little experimental literature related to its utilization across different providers and its efficacy. Further, there is a significant gap in the literature on lethal means counseling as it relates to adolescents. The proposed project will investigate a novel text message-based intervention aimed to promote lethal means safety.

Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Replication Trial

The overall goal for the proposed project is to test the effectiveness of BCBT for the prevention of suicide attempts in a sample of treatment-seeking Marines. The standard null hypothesis will involve tests conducted comparing improvement following BCBT (treatment duration of 12 weeks) to Person-Centered Therapy (PCT). The primary outcome comparisons will include direct markers of suicidality (i.e. suicide, suicide attempts). Secondary outcomes will be suicide ideation and indicators of psychiatric distress (e.g., depression, hopelessness). We also aim to assess several hypothesized psychological and neurocognitive mediators of treatment effects (e.g., wish to live, attentional bias, emotion regulation). Participants will be followed for 2 years posttreatment by independent evaluators blind to treatment condition.

Promoting Community Conversations About Research to End Native Youth Suicide in Rural Alaska

This intervention study measures the outcomes of the PC CARES (Promoting Community Conversations about Research to End Suicide) project implemented in remote rural Alaskan villages. Researchers worked with local service providers and other partners to recruit facilitators who were trained to implement the 5-session PC CARES curriculum. The study will compare pre-post data from intervention participants to non-participants, and will analyze social networks related to suicide prevention behavior in each village.
