6-0 Fast Absorbing Gut Versus 5-0 Fast Absorbing Gut for Linear Wound Closure

Surgical Wound Cosmesis

Traditionally, dermatologic surgeons close wounds with stitches. Fast absorbing gut is a dissolvable stitch that is very commonly used. Some surgeons believe that using a thinner size of this stitch causes less skin reaction and improves the cosmetic outcome of the scar. Other surgeons believe that using a thicker size of this stitch reduces the tension on the scar and improves the cosmetic outcome of the scar in that manner. The investigator wishes to determine whether the thickness of the fast absorbing gut suture that is used makes a difference in the cosmetic outcome of the scar.

Early Healing of Oral Soft Tissues: a Clinical and Biomolecular Analysis. Part II

Wound HealWound Surgical2 more

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the influence of the post-surgical chlorhexidine indication in the gene expression profile and cellular behavior in the early wound healing process -24 hours after injury- of the oral soft tissues. The main hypothesis is that the post-surgical use of chlorhexidine affects the gene expression and the celular behavior in the early wound healing process of the soft oral tissues.

The Effect of Reading Story Books on Fear and Anxiety Levels

Operative Incision

The aim of this project is to determine the effect of reading the story book, which is considered within the scope of the pedagogically approved research that introduces the surgical environment before the surgical intervention in children, on the pain and anxiety of the child. The project is a randomized controlled trial. The population of the research will be children between the ages of 4 and 6 who come to Atatürk University Health Research and Application Center Pediatric Surgery Clinic between March and September 2022 for treatment. The research sample; children and parents who are hospitalized in the clinic on the dates specified by the probabilistic sampling method and meet the research criteria, willing to participate in the research. "Survey Form", "Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS)" and "Child Fear Scale" will be used in data collection.

Buddy Relationships in DermatoloGic Excisions for Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer FaceQuality of Life2 more

More than 5 million skin cancer surgeries are performed each year in the United States with 80% of tumors appearing on the head and neck. Facial skin cancer diagnosis negatively affects patient quality of life (QOL) and treatment of skin cancer creates visible scars early in the postoperative period, increases anxiety, and impairs social interactions. We believe that these negative psychosocial changes represent an unmet need for additional social support and practical guidance. A one-to-one peer support program designed for skin cancer patients could provide a focused, cost-effective, patient-centered intervention to improve quality of life and increase satisfaction. Comparable one-to-one peer support programs have demonstrated high rates of patient satisfaction and positive QOL outcomes in a wide range of conditions. This prospective peer support program would be the first of its kind for melanoma and keratinocytic skin cancers. Our pilot program was designed in consultation with leading peer mentorship program researchers and we will implement a structured system to match volunteer mentors with patients. Through qualitative and quantitative data, we will evaluate the program's effect on patient QOL at 3 separate intervals: at initial consultation, 1-2 weeks post-surgery, and 3 months post-surgery. We hope that this study will enable us to design and execute a larger multi-center clinical trial in order to establish a best practice for surgeons to usher patients through the postoperative healing process after skin cancer surgery.

Comparison of NOSE and Conventional Methods in Laparoscopic Total Colon Surgery

Surgical Incision

Laparoscopic total colectomy (LTC) is an accepted surgical procedure for several colonic pathologies. Additionally, specimen extraction through the natural orifices is an emerging method when combined with the totally laparoscopic procedures. Our observations on natural orifice surgery was promising . In our daily surgical practice, investigators prefer the intracorporeal anastomosis and this study was conducted to compare the specimen extraction sites after LTC. Here investigators aimed to compare the results of conventional and natural orifice specimen extractions (NOSE) after totally LTCs.
