Non-pharmacological Pain Care During Complex Wound Care Procedures
Wound SurgicalWounds and Injuries3 moreThe main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect on pain and both Virtual Reality and Music Therapy as add-on therapy during wound care at the surgical wards in adults.
Erector Spinae Plane Block: For Pain Control in Patients Undergoing Flank Incision
NephrectomyPartial Nephrectomy1 moreUsing a randomized double-blinded study design, the study goal is to evaluate the superiority of Erector Spinae Plane block (ESPB) in the peri-operative pain management of patients undergoing surgery through a flank incision as compared to the standard of care of using IV and oral opiates.
Wet-to-dry vs Petrolatum & Non-stick Dressings After Hidradenitis Suppurativa Surgery
Hidradenitis SuppurativaSurgical WoundHidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, severe, inflammatory skin disease associated with pain, drainage, odor, and disability characterized by recurring abscesses, nodules, and tunneling sinuses in intertriginous locations such as the groin, buttocks, and axillae. HS has more negative impact on patients' quality of life than all other common dermatologic diseases and is common, affecting ~1% of the general population, with higher risk for females (3:1) and Black patients. The onset is often in adolescence. As HS has been under-studied historically, there is an unmet medical need to develop more effective treatment for this disease. While many patients are managed with medications and lifestyle modifications alone, a subset of HS patients benefit from surgical intervention. Proper wound care following HS surgery is paramount, as facilitating proper healing and minimizing infection can prevent post-operative complications, morbidity and the need for future procedures. While many physicians continue to use wet-to-dry dressings as the standard of care for HS patients post-operatively, it is likely that the drawbacks of this dressing technique outweigh the benefits. This study hopes to answer the question of whether or not wet-to-dry dressings should truly be standard of care or whether an alternate form of wound dressings, such as petrolatum with non-stick bandaging, is at least equitable if not superior in effect, and associated with fewer drawbacks such as associated pain and time dedicated to dressing changes. This study will be a randomized, single-blind trial of two postoperative bandaging techniques: wet-to-dry dressings vs. petrolatum with non-stick bandaging. Primary outcomes will be tracked using the photographic wound assessment tool (PWAT), pressure ulcer scale of healing (PUSH) tool, and Wound Quality of Life (QOL) Survey. There is potential for this study to apply to surgical interventions outside of HS, as the study addresses the bandaging technique (wet-to-dry) that is standard of care after many surgical procedures.
EO2 Oxygen Delivery To Study Success Rate of Surgically Closed Wounds
Surgical WoundDiabetes5 moreThe investigators will test the efficacy of the novel oxygen diffusion dressing allows delivery tissue oxygenation via TransCu O2® Oxygen Delivery System for use in caring for patients with surgically closed wounds. The investigators hypothesize that using this novel oxygen diffusion dressing will reduce the likelihood of necrotic tissue as well as severe incisional scar post-surgical closure by improving transcutaneous oxygen levels during wound healing process. TransCu O2 Oxygen Delivery System is a novel wound healing therapy that promises to enhance tissue hydration, which in turn may lead to quick epithelialization essential to reduce the likelihood of formation of necrotic tissue and excessive scars.
Evaluation of Post-discharge Surveillance Mobile Application for Surgical Site Infection
Surgical Wound InfectionObjective: evaluate the effectiveness and usability of a mobile application for post-discharge surveillance of surgical site infection as a support system for clinical decision.
Influence of Sun Protection and Linear Repair of Cutaneous Surgical Defects
Surgical WoundWound Heal2 moreThe purpose of this study is to determine the potential influence of sun protection on the aesthetic outcome of post-surgical scars following the reconstruction of Mohs micrographic surgery defects via linear repair. This study will be performed as a randomized split-wound study. Half of the wound will be treated with zinc containing sunscreen and the other half of the wound would not be treated. Three-months post-surgery, the scar will be evaluated via the patient observer scar assessment scale (POSAS), a validated scar instrument, as well as a colorimeter to measure the amount of vascularity, and hyperpigmentation between the treated and the non-treated area compared to the 'surrounding skin' defined as skin in the proximity but not adjacent to the wound. Any adverse events will also be recorded.
LiquiBand® Exceed™ and LiquiBand® Rapid™ for General Surgery Procedures
Surgical WoundThe purpose of this post market study is to evaluate the performance and safety of LiquiBand® Exceed™ and LiquiBand® Rapid™ for closure of surgical incisions associated with abdominal surgery.
Continuous Diffusion of Oxygen Treatment for Incision Wounds
Surgical WoundBreast Surgery2 moreThis is an exploratory randomized controlled trial study to test feasibility, acceptability, and proof of concept efficacy of Continuous Diffusion of Oxygen (CDO) adjunct therapy for decreasing healing time and reducing tissue necrosis post breast reconstruction. The investigator will assess the benefit of this novel adjunct therapy on successful closure, tissue oxygenation, scar appearance, and patients centered outcomes including perception of benefit, pain, sleep quality, and quality of life. Eligible subjects will be randomly (ratio 1:1) assigned to either intervention group (IG) or control group (CG) and will be followed for four weeks. Both groups will receive standard of care for wound treatment. IG will also receive CDO adjunct therapy using a novel dressing, which facilitates continuously supplies oxygen to the wound inside the wound dressing using a portable device named TransCu O2. The study device TransCu O2® is a Class II medical device which has US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance, CE-Mark approval and a Health Canada license for the treatment of wounds. Outcomes will be assessed on weekly-basis up to 4 weeks.
Hydrogen Peroxide to the Wound Following Surgical Incision Affecting Cultures in Primary Shoulder...
Primary Anatomic or Reverse Total Shoulder ArthroplastyCutibacterium acnes has been the focus of much recent shoulder literature, as it has been found to be both a common cause of periprosthetic joint infection as well as a common contaminant in shoulder surgery. Standard skin preparations have been found to be ineffective at eradicating C. acnes colonization on the skin and deep dermis of patients undergoing surgery. Recent literature has shown that skin preparation with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution is effective for decreasing the rate of cultures positive for C. acnes in both dermal and deep cultures; however, a positive rate of 10%-17% has still been reported despite this skin preparations. The current theory is that standard skin preparation does not remove C. acnes from the deep dermis which subsequently contaminates the deep tissue. We hypothesize that application of 3% hydrogen peroxide to the deep dermal layer immediately following the skin incision will even further decrease the rate of C. acnes contamination during surgery.
