Study of Taste Deficits
Taste DisorderHealthyThis study will explore the genetics of taste and taste deficits. The sense of taste plays a crucial role in food choices, allowing people to identify beneficial foods (those with high caloric value, which are typically sweet) and foods likely to be toxic (usually bitter substances). The loss of sense of taste in older people plays a role in decreased appetite and poor nutrition. Taste deficits may adversely affect people in ways that are not well understood. This study will examine why some people (about one-fourth of all people in the United States) cannot taste a substance called phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). The inability to taste PTC is due to inherited factors that are not yet clear. Individuals age 18 and older who can taste PTC and individuals who cannot taste PTC may be eligible for this study. Participants will taste a number of liquid solutions until they find one with a clear taste. Then they will taste another group of solutions and decide which ones have that taste and which have no taste. Finally, they will taste a third group of solutions until they find one with a different taste. About 2 tablespoons of blood will be drawn from participants for genetic tests related to the sense of taste.

The Change of the Structure and Function of Taste Buds After the Otosclerosis Surgery
Chorda Tympani DisorderTaste Disorders1 morePatients admitted for the otosclerosis operation are included in the study. The Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) of their taste buds is performed before the operation. The sensory function of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue is tested with the two point discrimination discs, the taste is tested with taste strips and the SF-36 questionnaire is applied. During the operation in local anesthesia the threshold for the tongue sensation (by the stimulation of the chorda tympani nerve) of the first 2/3 of the tongue at the beginning of the operation (when we first encounter the chorda tympani nerve) and at the end of the operation is measured.One month and six months after the operation the tests are being repeated (NBI, two-point discrimination and SF-36 questionnaire). The study has the National Ethical Committee approval.

The aim of this study is to first identify patients with a primary burning mouth disorder by excluding other possible causes for oral burning. By means of qualitative and quantitative sensory testing and a gustatory examination in the individual patient the investigators want to find out whether neurosensory differences exist between patients with a primary BMD and controls and whether gustatory and neurosensory deficits always coexist in BMD-patients.

COVID-19 by SARS-CoV-2 InfectionA novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 HAS arose in 2019 in Wuhan, China. Beside the classical semiology of this infection, numerous patients described olfactory and teste disorders. These symptoms are not described in this coronavirus, neurotropism of coronaviridae has been documented before. The aim of the study is to evaluate prevalence of anosmia and dysgeusia (olfactory and taste disorders) in coronavirus diagnosed patients and compare with different clinical conditions. The second endpoint is to evaluate the duration of these symptoms in order to better understand the semiology of this infection.
