Wheelchair Rugby Players With TetraplegiaPeople with Spinal cord injury with tetraplegia suffer from respiratory problem due to weakness of the muscles and because the autonomic system dysfunction. Exercise is one way of preserving and improving physical fitness and directly and indirectly reduce risk factors such as insulin resistance, weight loss and low values of HDL. subjects with spinal cord injury with tetraplegia have limited options for exercise: table tennis, gym, pool and more. Because of the nature of the injury which includes the sympathetic failure, they can not easily get the desired pulse to improve physical fitness. Wheelchair rugby in Canada was developed specifically for people with tetraplegia who could not participate in wheelchair basketball. The game combines short, quick races with different aerobic capabilities. Previous studies have shown that participants in wheelchair rugby Improve anaerobic power, oxygen consumption, physical fitness and daily functioning. Wheelchair rugby improves self-confidence and as a result it affects other areas of life. Another study examined sense of self-efficacy, saw improvement in this index for rugby players in a wheelchair at high levels. In the present study the investigators aim to examine whether regular participation in wheelchair Rugby for a season has more impact than other routine exercise (table tennis, gym, swimming).
Brain Computer Interface for Communication in ICU: a Feasibility Study
TetraplegiaGuillain-Barre SyndromeThe main objective of this study is to evaluate the usability of a system to assist verbal communication based on BCI system using the P300 wave in patients with tetraplegia who can no longer communicate because of severe engine damage (tetraplegia) and respiratory damage requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (intubation or tracheostomy) preventing verbal communication.

Sleep Disordered BreathingTetraplegiaSleep-disordered breathing (SDB) occurs in 2% to 4% of the non-disabled adult population and is characterized by periods of complete breathing cessation (apnea) or marked reductions in airflow (hypopnea) during sleep. By contrast, the diagnosis of SDB affects as many as 83% of persons with tetraplegia within one year of their injury. While some consider daytime somnolescence from poor sleep quality a 'tolerable annoyance', SDB can decrease near-term physical performance and mental alertness, decay memory and intellectual processing, invoke mood disturbances, decrease healthrelated quality of life(HRQoL), and cause vehicular or occupational injury. Recurrent sleep arousal is now strongly associated with cardiometabolic (CM) component risks including insulin resistance, obesity, inflammatory stress, and endothelial dysfunction. Despite considerable advancements in understanding and treating SDB - including favored use of positive airway pressure (PAP) - an evidence base sufficient to warrant routine evaluation and treatment of SDB and related sleep disorders remains elusive for those with spinal cord injury (SCI). To address these knowledge and treatment shortcomings the investigators will conduct a hypothesis-driven study with specific aims that will: 1) describe by stakeholder survey the clinically-relevant determinants of sleep quality in persons with chronic tetraplegia, 2) assess clinical features and co-morbid risks associated with SDB in persons with tetraplegia, and 3) determine in persons with tetraplegia having SDB whether treatment using PAP reduces health risks and improves HRQoL. Hypothesis 1 will be tested using data derived from a website survey.

It is important to identify the modes and intensities of exercise most likely to generate a reduction in these inactivity-related diseases in this population. Therefore, the main purpose of this pilot research project is to implement and test a form of a spinal cord injury-specific exercise, known as FES rowing (FES: functional electrical stimulation).

Locked-In Syndrome;Pulmonary Arteriovenous MalformationIn this case, we report a case of atresia syndrome (LIS), a serious neurological disease caused by pulmonary arteriovenous fistula (PAVM). We present a previously healthy middle-aged woman who developed atresia syndrome after severe pontine infarction due to basilar artery occlusion due to undiagnosed arteriovenous malformation. This report reviewed the medical history, post-admission examination and related literature, and concluded that PAVM should be considered as the cause of implicit stroke, especially in young patients with right-to-left shunt, and should be actively treated.
