Gallium-68 Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen PET in Diagnosing Patients With Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Gland Carcinoma

This pilot clinical trial studies how well Gallium-68 prostate specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography (PET) work in diagnosing patients with thyroid cancer. Diagnostic procedures, such as 68Ga-PSMA PET, may more accurately diagnose thyroid cancer and find out how far the disease has spread.

Differentiated Thyroid Cancer (DTC)

The primary purpose of this study is to compare the progression-free survival (PFS) of participants with radioiodine (131 I)-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and radiographic evidence of disease progression within the prior 12 months treated with lenvatinib 24 mg by continuous once daily (QD) oral dosing versus placebo.

Pembrolizumab, Chemotherapy, and Radiation Therapy With or Without Surgery in Treating Patients...

Thyroid Gland Undifferentiated (Anaplastic) Carcinoma

This phase II trial studies how well pembrolizumab, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy work with or without surgery in treating patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer. Monoclonal antibodies, such as pembrolizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel and doxorubicin hydrochloride, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells and shrink tumors. Giving pembrolizumab, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy with or without surgery may kill more tumor cells and work better in treating patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer.

Radiolabelled CCK-2/Gastrin Receptor Analogue for Personalized Theranostic Strategy in Advanced...

Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma

The study is a phase I multicentre randomized, open, parallel-arm clinical trial conducted to investigate the IMP, namely 111In-CP04. The study consists of preclinical (to establish a clinically useful formulation for the radiolabelled peptide CP04), and a clinical step. The main objective of the clinical part of the project is to establish the safety of i.v. administration of a high peptide amount and to assess the tracer biodistribution and dosimetry in MTC and normal tissues and to determine critical organs as well as the evaluation of the potential of CCK2 receptor scintigraphy to detect cancer lesions for both low (10ug) and high (50ug) peptide amount and the decrease of kidney dose after co-administration of gelofusine /gelaspan as a nephroprotective agent. To achieve this, the following study design has been accepted: the first 4 patients will receive 2 peptide amount of CP04: low peptide amount (for diagnostic purpose) and high peptide amount (for therapeutic purpose) of CP04. If no SAE is present, the remaining pts will be randomized for 2 arms: high peptide amount of 111In-CP04 with and without gelofusine/gelaspan infusion. It is expected that CCK-2/gastrin receptor imaging will become a valid diagnostic method for a specific non-invasive staging and follow-up of patients with MTC, and treatment of recurrent and disseminated disease will be more efficient with minimized nephro- and myelotoxicity (if 111In labelled).

Effect of Intravenous Magnesium on Postoperative Sore Throat After Thyroidectomy

Thyroid Neoplasms

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of intravenous magnesium on postoperative throat pain after thyroidectomy. The secondary purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of intravenous magnesium on total dose of fentanyl in recovery room after thyroidectomy.

Amyloid Proteins From Medullary Thyroid Cancer and Laryngeal Amyloidosis

AmyloidMedullary Thyroid Cancer2 more

Using excess tumour samples that contain amyoid, from patients with Medullary Thyroid Cancer, we aim to determine the structures of ex vivo amyloid fibrils from human tumour tissue samples and compare them with that of existing stock of in vitro formed amyloid fibrils. This will permit the analysis of the effects of gene mutation and post-translational modification on the development of amyloid from a disease state. Amyloid is known to accumulate in the brain tissue of patients with neuro-degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Dementia. Therefore solving the structure of amyloid fibrils may aid the development of future treatments for these conditions.

Validation of the Diagnostic Accuracy of the Electronic Nose in the Detection of Thyroid Cancer...

Thyroid Neoplasm

Patients with a suspected thyroid nodule face an invasive and patient unfriendly diagnostic work-up to determine the risk of malignancy. Typically, patients undergo ultrasound of the thyroid gland followed by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). FNAC has been considered as a gold standard diagnostic procedure in suspected thyroid nodules. Unfortunately, both the negative- and positive predictive value of FNAC is poor, often resulting in the need for a diagnostic hemithyroidectomy for definite diagnosis . Approximately 40-94% of the suspected thyroid nodules appear to be benign after resection and thus exposes patients to unnecessary surgery with unnecessary risks. Therefore, a quick, non-invasive assessment of the risk of malignancy of thyroid nodules is of paramount importance. Such a novel test could fasten the diagnostic process for patients with malignancies and reduce the amount of 'unnecessary' surgeries for benign conditions. A promising development in cancer detection is based on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gaseous degradation products of biochemical processes detectable in exhaled breath. During pathophysiological processes related to tumor growth, alterations in cell metabolism lead to a shift in the production of VOCs. The VOCs' patterns can be detected by the Aeonose™ through their reaction with the metal-oxide sensors in this device. A pilot study conducted at the Maastricht University Medical Center demonstrated that, by creating an artificial neural network (ANN) from the VOC patterns of numerous patients and their specific histopathological diagnosis, the Aeonose™ has a high diagnostic accuracy to discriminate benign from malignant thyroid nodules. The purpose of this study is to validate the accuracy of the Aeonose™, to prevent unnecessary surgery and to investigate the use of the Aeonose™ as a surveillance tool in the postoperative follow-up of differentiated thyroid cancer. We hypothesize that the high negative predictive value of the pilot study will be confirmed in the validation study and expect that implementation of the Aeonose™ in clinical practice will subsequently reduce the number of unnecessary surgeries below 10% for patients with Bethesda ≥ III nodules and may provide an important role in non-invasive detection of recurrent disease.

Cediranib Maleate With or Without Lenalidomide for the Treatment of Thyroid Cancer

Refractory Differentiated Thyroid Gland CarcinomaRefractory Thyroid Gland Follicular Carcinoma3 more

This partially randomized phase I/II trial studies the side effects and best dose of cediranib maleate when given together with or without lenalidomide and to see how well they work in treating patients with thyroid cancer. Cediranib maleate may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Lenalidomide may stop the growth of thyroid cancer by blocking blood flow to the tumor. It is not yet known whether cediranib maleate is more effective when given together with lenalidomide in treating thyroid cancer.

Combination of Temsirolimus and Sorafenib in the Treatment of Radioactive Iodine Refractory Thyroid...

Thyroid Cancer

The purpose of this study is to find out what effects, good and/or bad, the combination of sorafenib and temsirolimus will have on thyroid cancer. Treatment guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network include sorafenib as a treatment option for thyroid cancer. Temsirolimus is an intravenous medication that is FDA approved for other type of cancers. In laboratory studies, the addition of temsirolimus to sorafenib works better than sorafenib alone.
