Tinnitus is defined as a perception of sound without any external sound source. Chronic tinnitus is a frequent condition that can affect the quality of life. The questionnaire "Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI)" promises to be the new gold standard in tinnitus evaluation. Due to the forward and backward translation of this questionnaire, there are two different German versions of TFI for Switzerland and Germany. Both German versions were validated. The aim of this study is to compare the two German versions of the TFI with each other and to recommend the better one for the further use in tinnitus evaluation for the German speaking population.

EMA-Defined Tinnitus Subgroups

Tinnitus

The purpose of this research study is to test a new way of measuring the severity of tinnitus using a tool called Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) of Tinnitus. We will compare the relationship with this tool with another widely used questionnaire. Previous studies we have done suggest there are different patterns of tinnitus bother; we plan to explore how often these patterns occur, and how many patterns of tinnitus bother there are. And lastly we want to test how reliable this type of testing is for measuring the amount of bother people experience from their tinnitus. Hypothesis 1: We will be able to identify 6 or more distinctive patterns of tinnitus. Hypothesis 2: EMA will provide a reliable method for more accurately capturing the amount of bother individuals have from tinnitus.

Exploring Voluntary Control of Tinnitus

This pilot study aims to increase the understanding of tinnitus through the identification of potentially altered brain networks in patients who are able to voluntarily control or alter their tinnitus. Upon completion of this study, new knowledge will be gained about the changes in brain activity in people who are able to modify their tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the acoustic perception of sound without any physical source. It is estimated that 15-21% of adults develop a Tinnitus, which can cause serious distress and debilitation in all aspects of daily life of the affected. There is currently no evidence for a successful treatment of tinnitus. While one treatment approach involves sound-based therapies, e.g. tinnitus retraining therapy. The treatment aspect in our setting involved cognitive behavioural therapy.

Evaluation of the Elimination of Tinnitus and Hyperacusis by the ØREBLUE® Method

Tinnitus and hyperacusis are two hearing disorders that can severely impact the patient and their quality of life, as they may induce sleeping disorders, concentration troubles, social life disturbances. Mayfair Developments has created and developed the innovating ØREBLUE® method in order to relieve, possibly completely, tinnitus and hyperacusis symptoms. The ØREBLUE® method relies on a medical device, CE marked, that consists of an auditory stimulation box associated with five softwares. This medical device diffuses thanks to a headphone a specific and personalized sound therapy treatment for the patient. This retrospective, observational study aims at collecting data about the ØREBLUE® method used in routine care and describing its efficacy on tinnitus and hyperacusis.

Task-Based Functional MRI (fMRI) in Patients With Severely Bothersome Tinnitus

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a poorly understood symptom that is often described either as ringing, clicking, ocean sounds, or nature sounds. There is no cure for tinnitus. Approximately 50 million Americans are affected with a small minority being severely affected. This study targets patients with tinnitus who are severely bothered. Through MRI the investigators plan to evaluate the cortical networks of the brain in hopes to better understand this complex process.

Tinnitus in Patients With and Without Sensorineural Hearing Loss

The aim of this study is to evaluate hearing characteristics in patients with and without tinnitus using DPOAE and specific tinnitus severity index (TSI) and tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) questionnaires in both groups. Purpose of the research: Demonstrate that the characteristics of tinnitus depend on the presence and magnitude of hearing loss. Research participants: 150 patients coming for further audiological treatment due to tinnitus. Data will be collected from an electronic database that is filled in during diagnostic processing. During the diagnostic processing, TSI and THI questionnaires will be filled in, a tone audiogram (TA) and DPOAE will be performed.
