It is not yet known whether lung rehabilitation is more effective than standard therapy in improving lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who are undergoing surgery for lung cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying lung rehabilitation to see how well it works compared to standard therapy in treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who are undergoing surgery for lung cancer.
Human Laboratory Study Of Varenicline in Smokers
Nicotine DependenceThe purpose of this study is to test the ways that a drug called varenicline helps smokers to quit smoking. Varenicline is also called Chantix® and is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help people quit smoking. We will test how varenicline works by having you quit smoking and complete tasks that assess how you think and feel. We predict that varenicline help reduce anxiety, improve attention and concentration, and reduce how satisfying cigarettes are.
A Pilot Study of the Neural Correlates of Treatment Effect on Nicotine Craving
Tobacco Use DisorderThe purpose of this study is to gather pilot data to determine feasibility of and guide the development of a larger clinical trial investigating the effects of topiramate as an adjunct to nicotine replacement therapy and behavioral counseling in smoking cessation treatment. It is hypothesized that topiramate will decrease nicotine craving and result in improved outcomes for smoking cessation.
Use of Pharmacotherapy to Reduce Cue-responsiveness in Smokers

Previous studies have indicated that bupropion may be able to achieve these outcomes. Therefore, we predict that smokers treated with bupropion for several weeks will show reduced reactivity to cigarette cues and craving.
Comparative Abuse Liability Among African American and White Smokers

The core design is a three-group mixed repeated measures design, in which participants are randomized into one of three conditions (control [CTL], dyadic target [DT] FIT or single target [ST] FIT) and tracked across 3 months. The FIT involves monetary incentives for online psychoeducation completion and smoking abstinence at follow-up.

Brain Imaging in Tobacco Smokers During a Quit Attempt
Tobacco Use DisorderTobacco SmokingThe proposed study will help fill gaps in existing research by determining if nicotine-dependent cigarette smokers show changes in α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) availability when compared to matched historical controls using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and the radioactive ligand [18F]-ASEM (3-(1,4-diazabicyclo[3.2.2]nonan-4-yl)-6 [18F]fluorodibenzo[b,d]thiophene 5,5-dioxide), an α7 nAChR antagonist. The study will also explore whether α7 nAChR availability influences clinically relevant measures of tobacco abstinence (e.g., withdrawal and craving, cognitive impairment), self-reported cigarettes per day, and time to relapse during an 8-day quit attempt during which smokers can receive escalating payments contingent upon providing objective evidence (breath CO and urinary cotinine) of smoking abstinence.
