Tobacco Approach Avoidance Training for Adolescent Smokers-2
Tobacco Use DisorderThis is a two part study. In Study 2, smokers who want to quit smoking will participate in a 4 week smoking cessation program combining weekly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with weekly regular-AAT or placebo-AAT training. We hypothesize that adolescent smokers will exhibit stronger approach tendencies towards smoking-related stimuli in the tobacco Approach Avoidance Training (AAT) task when compared with nonsmokers and that adolescent smokers who are trained to avoid smoking related stimuli using the AAT will avoid tobacco approach tendencies in the AAT test trials and the Implicit Association Task, when compared to adolescent smokers who are not exposed to AAT training. We also hypothesize that adolescent smokers who are trained to avoid tobacco in a training AAT in combination with CBT will have better abstinence rates compared to those who receive placebo AAT training with CBT.

Vigorous Exercise for Depressed Smokers
Nicotine DependenceDepressionIn this project the investigators will develop and pilot test a supervised, vigorous intensity exercise intervention for depressed female smokers. If the pilot intervention is successful the investigators will have a blueprint for a large randomized controlled trial. The long term objective is to develop interventions for depressed women that will ultimately reduce their risk of tobacco-caused disease and mortality.

Smoking cessation interventions for cancer patients thus far have had limited success. This is a pilot randomized controlled trial designed to determine if a new comprehensive, evidence-based smoking cessation intervention can improve quit rates for cancer patients who smoke.

Self-activation in Individuals With and Without Nicotine Dependence
Addiction NicotineThe purpose of this study is to see if a non-medication intervention can increase motivation and reward processing to non-drug reward cues (for example, a picture of one's favorite food) in individuals with and without nicotine dependence by observing brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG) and/or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The investigators hypothesize that learning to increase brain activity to non-drug cues may improve reward responses and motivation to non-drug cues, and for individuals who smoke, may eventually result in improved smoking cessation outcomes.
Glucocorticoid Antagonist Treatment for Tobacco Use Disorder
Nicotine DependenceThe purpose of this protocol is to examine whether mifepristone, a medication with glucocorticoid receptor antagonist activity, may be a potential treatment for Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD). Mifepristone has already shown promise as a potential treatment for PTSD (1) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) (2), but no previous studies have examined the therapeutic potential of mifepristone for TUD. This will be a double-blind, placebo-controlled study on the effects of a 7-day treatment with 600 mg mifepristone, or placebo, on cognitive function, tobacco withdrawal severity, and smoking behavior.
Incentives to Promote Smoking Cessation in Low SES Women
Nicotine DependenceThe purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of a mobile-phone based contingency management (CM) intervention for smoking in low-SES women. The CM intervention will be combined with a Brief Motivational Interviewing (BMI) counseling component. This study will examine the following research aims: Primary Aim: To compare the effects of a Brief Motivational Intervention (BMI) + mobile phone-based CM on tobacco use when compared to BMI with a non-contingent control condition in a small feasibility trial. Hypothesis: The investigators expect women in the BMI + CM condition to have more smoke free days than women in the BMI + NC condition. Secondary Aim: To examine alcohol use as a moderator of cessation outcomes.

Tobacco Use DisorderSmoking CessationIdentifying new medication options is critical for curbing the health burdens of cigarette smoking. Currently approved smoking cessation medications act on nicotinic receptors, and additional work is needed to identify medications with alternate pharmacological targets. Based on evidence that the serotonin system plays a role in nicotine consumption and relapse, this study will examine whether a selective serotonin medication alters smoking-related behaviors and responses to cigarette smoking under controlled conditions, informing its potential utility for smoking cessation.

Heroin DependenceNicotine DependenceThe goal of the proposed research is to improve the effectiveness of treatments for opioid and for nicotine dependence by testing a novel pharmacological strategy. Specifically, pioglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated gamma receptor (PPARγ) agonist, will be used as an adjunct to agonist-based treatment.
