A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-Blind, Double-Dummy Study Of Azithromycin SR Versus Amoxicillin...

Tonsillitis

The objective was to determine if a single 60 mg/kg dose of azithromycin SR was as safe and effective as a 10-day regimen of amoxicillin (45 mg/kg/day, given in divided doses every 12 hours) when used to treat children with strep throat.

Recurrent Throat Infections and Tonsillectomy

TonsillitisPharyngitis

The purpose of this study is to find out if tonsillectomy reduces the short-term risk of having an objectively confirmed (sequential changes in serum crp and procalcitonin levels) delayed pharyngitis episode among patients suffering from recurrent pharyngitis episodes. Other aims are to find out the effect of tonsillectomy to reduce the number of pharyngitis episodes or symptoms. Still, the possible disadvantages of tonsillectomy and changes in the quality of life after tonsillectomy among these patients are examined.

Efficacy Study of Pristinamycin Versus Amoxicillin to Treat Tonsillitis Induced by Streptococcus...

Tonsillitis

The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate the non-inferiority, at the assessment visit (V3 (D10/D14)), in terms of bacteriological efficacy of pristinamycin (PRI) administered for 4 days versus amoxicillin (AMX) administered for 6 days in the treatment of tonsillitis caused by GAS, in subjects aged between 6 and 25 in the per protocol (PP) group.

Battlefield Auricular Acupuncture During Adult Tonsillectomies and Effect of Post op Pain and Nausea...

Tonsillitis

The purpose of this study is to determine if auricular acupuncture significantly reduces post-operative pain in comparison to the standard of care. Post-operative pain score will be collected by subject self-report of pain according to the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) (0= no pain, 10 = worst imaginable pain) up to 10 days post-operation.

Improving the Diagnosis of Tonsillitis in Emergency Rooms

Tonsillitis

A point-of-care laboratory (POC) was set at North Hospital, Marseille, France for the diagnosis in less than two hours of tonsillitis caused by known pathogens, close to the reception of Emergency service. In this instance 30% of patients have no etiological diagnosis after the POC tonsillitis tests . This lab has discovered over 200 new species of bacteria in humans, including vector bacteria and opened the field of large Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA ) viruses. Also, the laboratory of emerging viruses discovered many Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) viruses transmitted by arthropods. Based on this collection of new pathogens described in POC laboratory, this study proposes to expand the etiological diagnosis strategy of tonsillitis after POC tests. The objective of this study is to implement a new diagnosis strategy relying on the hypothesis that a second pharyngeal swab would improve the etiological diagnosis of tonsillitis of at least 5%.

Acupuncture for Tonsillectomy Pain

ChildrenPostoperative Pain3 more

Pain after tonsillectomy can be severe and last ten days. Various new surgical instruments have been developed over the years in an attempt to reduce postoperative pain with mixed results and increased costs; no single tonsillectomy technique is superior to the rest. Patients are discharged to home usually on the day of surgery and often suffer significant pain and nausea. Pain medication is often prescribed which can cause nausea, vomiting and constipation. Children in pain are reluctant to take in fluids and may require intravenous hydration at an emergency department. "Battlefield acupuncture " has been recently developed by the US Air Force and is now being used in Iraq and Afghanistan on wounded warriors suffering severe acute pain from trauma. This protocol consists of five acupuncture points on the outer ear. A recent study has demonstrated decreased pain and agitation in children undergoing ear tube insertion. Ear tube patients have mild discomfort compared to tonsillectomy patients and are able to attend school the next day. The investigators have been encouraged by the benefits of acupuncture during surgery for ear tube patients and also wounded warriors recovering from their injuries. These findings motivated us to see if acupuncture during tonsillectomy surgery would result in less pain and nausea.
