Impedance Spectroscopy in Detection of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries
Obstetric Anal Sphincter InjuryDelivery1 moreThe main purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the impedance spectroscopy device prototype in detection of anal sphincter injuries in women in the early postpartum period. The study is prospective. The study group comprises 24 patients; included in it 6-8 weeks after natural delivery. The planned participation of each patient in the study is up to 4 weeks and three visits will take place at that time. After obtaining written consent, at the screening visit (V0) each patient will undergo a physical examination, blood samples for laboratory tests and stool samples for calprotectin concentration assessment will be collected. On the second visit (V1), after the final verification of inclusion/exclusion criteria, impedance spectroscopy using tested device will be performed in each patient, the electrical impedance of pelvic floor muscles will be measured and the degree of anal sphincter damage will be evaluated. Full gynecological and proctological examination (including a gynecological speculum, two-handed examination, rectal examination and anoscopy) will be carried out. On the third visit (V2), two reference diagnostic tests (with evidenced effectiveness and safety), transanal ultrasonography and anorectal manometry, will be conducted. The collected data will be used to select the optimal therapeutic method for each participant individually.
Preventing Injury in Elite Orienteerers
Lower Extremity InjuryThe aim of this study is to investigate the effect a specific exercise program on the incidence of injuries in the lower extremity. 72 elite orienteerers, aged 18-40 years, are allocated to an intervention or control group. The intervention group performs four specific exercises, four times a week (10 minutes per session) in conjunction with normal training. Injury data are collected every second week using valid injury questionnaire distributed by text messages over 14 weeks. Primary outcome is number of substantial injuries in the lower extremity. Secondary outcomes are incidence of ankle sprains and the average substantial injury prevalence across the 10 weeks.

Participation in physical conditioning increases the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, and our 10-year retrospective analysis shows that 5% of soldiers sustain a sports injury during physical conditioning each year, and that ankle and knee injuries have the highest incidence rates of 25% and 20%, respectively. The primary objective of our study is to decrease the rate of ankle and knee injuries by implementing a preventive training program. The study is designed as a prospective randomized controlled trial with two arms (experimental and control).

Although donor site heals with primary intention causing less scar tissue, in some different harvesting procedures primary flap closure may not be achieved due to nature of thick palatal tissues. Some potential complications may occur at donor site such as: necrosis of graft and palatal site, pain, excessive hemorrhage, protracted discomfort, donor site infection and in some cases donor site paresthesia. Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is a platelet concentrate obtained by a simple procedure that does not require biochemical blood involvement.Based on the known biological effects of PRF, the aim of this study is to evaluate the PRF in the management of soft tissue donor sites in term of bleeding and pain sensation, and to observe the changes in tissue healing after a subepithelial connective tissue graft procedure at palatal donor site.

Scarring from CS potentially causes discomfort and psychological distress. Emerging evidence indicates that epidermal growth factor (EGF) plays crucial roles in wound healing with the potential of minimizing scar formation. This study aims to investigate the effect of microencapsulated recombinant human EGF (Me-EGF) in scar prevention. Silicone gel was incorporated as part of the routine scar treatment. Healthy women scheduled for cesarean delivery will be enrolled and randomized to three groups: (1) no scar treatment, (2) silicone gel only, or (3) silicone gel plus Me-EGF. Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) will be used for scar assessment at the 6th month and 9th month after CS.
