Screening Brain MRI in High School Football: Does the Guardian Cap Reduce the Risk of Traumatic...

Brain ConcussionBrain Injuries5 more

Screening Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with Fluid-attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) and Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI) sequences will be performed pre and post season on high school football players. One set of players will wear the Guardian Cap on their five star rated helmets and the other will wear five star rated helmets only. The investigators will compare outcomes of ImPACT scores and MRI findings between the two groups to see if there is a statistical difference in reduction of injury and to establish what the baseline level of MRI findings related to injury from high school football is as well as what the baseline level of injury is prior to the start of the season.

Ultrasound-Assisted Lumbar Puncture

Spinal PunctureDiagnostic Imaging

Although the lumbar puncture is a common procedure and has been performed without ultrasound for decades, other research studies suggest that there may be some benefits to using ultrasound. This study intends to see whether by using ultrasound there is increased success rate, decreased need for additional procedures, and less discomfort during the procedure.

A Case Series Evaluating a Collagen Wound Dressing to Treat Wounds

Wound

Chronic wounds are a source of significant morbidity and escalated healthcare costs. The wound care professional has a myriad of modern wound dressings to choose from, each of which has benefits and drawbacks. An understanding of how a given dressing performs in healing a particular wound is crucial in order to determine a clinical mapping of wound dressings to wound types; such a categorization would lead to more efficient clinical decision making and better patient outcomes. This case series will evaluate the ability of a porcine-derived collagen dressing to improve healing of chronic lower-extremity wounds.

Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the Treatment of Crush Injuries

Crush Injury

The purpose of this study is to determine whether using hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) improves wound healing for patients who have a crush injury. The comparison of the prospective intervention group to the retrospective matched cohort aims to show that HBO can improve wound healing and decrease poor outcomes for patients with crush injuries. The information gained from this small study will serve as a basis for a follow-up prospective, randomized control trial to further delineate the role of HBO in a larger patient population.

A Study of Child Injury Based on Data Mining

InjuriesChild

A comprehensive pediatric injury burden assessment is an essential foundation for formulating injury prevention strategies and improving emergency care for injured children. Although the hospital-based passive surveillance of national injury surveillance system of medical and health institutions has been well-established in China, the monitoring points of hospitals were not stratified according to children's hospital. Aim of the project is to collect epidemiological and clinical data to describe causes, clinical features and outcomes of pediatric injuries at a Children's Hospital in Shanghai, China. The project intends to establish a method for collecting and analyzing high quality data of child injury using data mining based on the hospital information system.

Musculotendinous Tissue Unit Repair and Reinforcement (MTURR) Coordinating Center

Traumatic InjuryMuscle Injury3 more

The objective of the study is to assess mechanical strength and function in subjects undergoing Musculotendinous Tissue Unit Repair and Reinforcement (MTURR) with the use of biologic scaffolds for the restoration of both mechanical strength and function in these subjects. This study will formally evaluate healing and return of function after an extracellular matrix device implantation in 40 male and female subjects participating at 4-5 military sites who suffer from injury with loss of skeletal muscle tissue. The University of Pittsburgh under the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the Coordinating Center for this multi-site study.

The Use of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) to Study Implicit Motor Learning on Patients...

Traumatic Brain InjuryStroke

The purpose of this study is to study motor learning and recovery of patients with brain damage caused by traumatic brain injury or stroke with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). It is hypothesized that anodal tDCS on the lesion side and/or cathodal tDCS on the healthy side of motor cortex could improve the recovery of motor function such as learning.

Robot-based Tele-echography II - A Comparative Study

Abdominal InjuriesThoracic Injuries1 more

The aim of this clinical trial is to evaluate the concordance of diagnosis of injuries in thoracoabdominal trauma using two different echographic methods. The first method is a robot-based tele-echography performed by radiologists in a remote location. The second is bedside echography performed by emergency physicians according to the FAST (Focussed Assessment by Sonography of Trauma) examination.

Trial of Vacuum Assisted Closure® Therapy Versus Control Therapy in Angiogenesis

Wounds

The purpose of this study is to determine: If vacuum assisted closure (VAC®) therapy results in altered proteomic expression of angiogenic markers compared to moist wound therapy. If VAC® therapy results in increased angiogenesis compared to moist wound therapy.
