Iraq- Afghanistan War Lung Injury Using 19F MRI (DIAL1001006)

Constrictive BronchiolitisIraq-Afganistan War Lung Injury Syndrome

The goal of this study is to evaluate the utilization of conventional 'thermally' polarized perfluorinated gases mixed with oxygen as an exogenous inert contrast agent to image the airway spaces in subjects with suspected lung disease, post deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is an open label proof of concept study expanding on work here at Duke.

Anesthetics to Prevent Lung Injury in Cardiac Surgery

Inflammatory Lung InjuryIschemia-Reperfusion Lung Injury1 more

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the use of inhaled anesthetics, compared to intravenous anesthetics, can affect the amount of lung inflammation and postoperative respiratory complications seen after cardiac surgery.

Effects of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) in Treatment of Non-healing Sternum Wound After Open-heart...

Sternal Wound Repair

Sternal wound and there complication such as infection, Bruising and scar formation are known as major complication cardiac surgery with a high mortality rate up to 50%. Several approaches have been proposed for treatment of chronic sternal wounds in these patients. however, Underlying confounding factors such as old ages, diabetes mellitus, systemic hypoxia, atherosclerosis and malnutrition have main role against wound repairing. In this study investigators aimed to treatment of patients with open heart surgery and need to strict monitoring of sternal wound repair by Platelet Rich Fibrin.

Utility of Whole-body MRI in the Detection of Traumatic Injuries of Undetermined Origin in Children...

Traumatic Injuries

The diagnosis of abuse in children relies heavily on the presence of skeletal and extraskeletal injuries. However, some lesions are not seen by initial skeletal survey. And the investigators have to complete the skeletal survey with either bone-scan or CT scan or whole-body MRI. whole-body MRI has proved its worth in the pediatric population for the evaluation of skeletal and extraskeletal lesions in children with cancer or infectious diseases. Thus, whole-body MRI would allowed to have total picture of children without ionising radiation exposure.

Prevention of Acute Kidney Injury Through Biomarker-guided Nephrological Intervention

Acute Kidney Injury

This study examines the clinical relevance of early biomarkers to detect and prevent acute kidney injury. High-risk patients for developing acute kidney injury will be screened at initial presentation (emergency department and intensive care unit) for TIMP2xIGFBP7. In case of elevated readings patients will be randomized in two arms: The control group will be treated with standard care, the intervention group will receive an early nephrologic consultation.

Physical Therapy for Women With Obstetric Trauma and Anal Incontinence

Sphincter Ani IncontinenceObstetric Trauma

Our primary objective is to determine if physical therapy (PT) and behavioral therapy (BT) in the post-partum period after a vaginal delivery complicated by genital trauma help to improve a woman's quality of life, specifically in regard to anal incontinence. To be able to study this, the investigators need to know how well the muscles of a woman's pelvic floor function after a vaginal delivery and this requires measuring their strength during a pelvic exam. At present, there are no studies that have looked at whether the intervention of PT/BT improves a woman's anal incontinence quality of life after sustaining genital trauma during vaginal deliveries

Laryngeal Injuries After Anesthesia Induction With Three Different Sevoflurane Concentrations (Without...

Other Specified Injuries of Vocal CordSequela

Anesthesia induction and tracheal intubation can be performed with and without neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs). Tracheal intubation can be performed with sevoflurane instead of NMBAs; intubating conditions are similar and the incidence of vocal cord injuries are similar, too.

FAST Learning Methods

Trauma

Training paramedics in new skills via classroom-based teaching has inherent costs and time constraints. The investigators sought to evaluate whether web-based didactics result in similar knowledge improvement and retention of FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) compared with the traditional method.
