The DCU Running Injury Surveillance Centre Study: A Prospective Investigation of Factors Relating...

Musculoskeletal Injury

This study aims to prospectively investigate the relationship between a number of clinical and biomechanical variables and running-related injuries among a group of novice and recreational runners over a two year time period. To date, the incidence of running injuries among runners is high, with a lack of prospective research investigating the factors related to injury. It is thought that loading in excess of the tissues capabilities may be be a contributing factor to sustaining a running related injury. As such, this study hypothesizes that biomechanical factors may be related to injury. Healthy participants will perform a battery of clinical tests at baseline, as well as completing a survey that details their injury history and training habits. Kinematic and kinetic motion analysis will be used as participants perform a series of functional movements and a treadmill run. Enrolled participants will be monitored for the occurrence of running-related injuries via email for the duration of the study.

Development of a New Prognostic Assessment Tool for Postoperative Myocardial Injury

Perioperative ComplicationMyocardial Injury

Myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery (MINS) is common, silent, and strongly associated with morbi-mortality. There are some evidences in the littérature showing that troponin elevation pre and/or postoperatively and surgical Apgar score are strongly and independently associated with postoperative morbi-mortality. In this cohort study of orthopedic surgery patients (> 50years), the aim is to determine MINS incidence and to assess wich peri-operative factors are associated with the occurrence of MINS. The final objective is to create a score to better identified the patients with a MINS and a poor outcome.

Psychometric Properties of Sit-to-stand Test in Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord Injuries

Do different arm placements (including arms on armrests/devices, arms on knees, arms free, and arm crossed over chest) influence outcomes of sit-to-stand test (STST) in ambulatory individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI)? What are the factors associated with ability to perform STST in ambulatory individuals with SCI? Are the single-time sit-to-stand test (STSST) and five-time sit-to-stand test (FTSST) reliable, valid and responsive to determine functional alteration in ambulatory individuals with SCI?

Evaluation of the Bulbocavernosus Reflex After Acute Spinal Cord Injury

Bulbocavernosus ReflexSpinal Cord Injuries

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility to use electromyography in acute phase after a traumatic spinal cord injury to measure quantitatively and objectively the bulbocavernosus reflex. This study also aims to determine if there is a relationship between the bulbocavernosus reflex and neuro-functional recovery 3 months after a traumatic spinal cord injury. To do so, 20 patients admitted for acute traumatic spinal cord injury will be recruited prospectively. Within 72 hours post-trauma, the bulbocavernous reflex of all participants will be assessed according to the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) and by electromyography. Neurological improvement during the rehabilitation process and functional status at 3 months following the traumatic spinal cord injury will also be assessed.

Magnetic Resonance Elastography in Patients With Acute Closed Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health issue, and intracranial hypertension in the acute phase remains a critical scientific issue. Many patients with acute closed TBI received conservative, non-surgical treatments at first, while 5%~19% of which develops intractable intracranial hypertension that requires emergent surgery. Therefore, it is of great clinical significance to identify patients who are at high risk of deterioration in the early stage. Previous studies have found that brain compliance is a contributive factor to intracranial pressure, and might serve in the development of intracranial hypertension after TBI. We made assumption that intracranial pressure has a negative relationship with brain compliance providing that the volume of hematoma remains constant. However, few studies have applied magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) in evaluating brain compliance in patients with TBI. Therefore, this study is designed to enroll patients with acute closed traumatic brain injury who are initially treated non-surgically. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) sequences are performed to non-invasively assess patients' brain compliances, in the hope of exploring the potential value of MRE biomarkers to predict the short-term outcome in patients with acute closed TBI who are initially receive non-surgical treatments.

Strengthening Health Systems for Persons With Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in South Africa and Sweden...

Spinal Cord Injuries

A traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) often causes an unprecedented change in functioning by altering bodily structure and function. More specifically, the direct consequences of TSCI to the motor, sensory and autonomic nervous system not only challenge an individual's independency but also the ability to make a positive adjustment to life after injury. In line with this, TSCI survivors often experience threats to their livelihood and becoming integrated members of society. Health systems therefore need to be ready to respond to the myriad of challenges following a TSCI by providing access to specialized and comprehensive services. The provision of specialized care in a time-sensitive manner has shown to be crucial for survival and recovery of functioning after a traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI). However, little is known about the provision of TSCI care in different international contexts; information which is required for strengthening policy and practice.

Vancomycin-Associated Acute Kidney Injury: A Cross-Sectional Study From a Multi- Center in China...

VancomycinStaphylococcal Infections3 more

The objective of this study was to investigate the current situation of vancomycin (VAN)-associated acute kidney injury (VA-AKI) in China and identify the risk factors for VA-AKI, as well as to comprehensively examine the risk related to concurrent drug use. Further, the investigators assessed the outcomes of patients who developed VA-AKI and the risk factors for these outcomes. Finally, the investigators aimed to provide suggestions for improving the prevention and treatment of VA-AKI in China.
