Dry Needling on the Treatment of Chronic Somatosensory Tinnitus: An Open Pilot Study

TinnitusTrigger Point Pain2 more

Self paring study, double blind placebo controlled with chronic tinnitus patients attended at the Tinnitus Research Group HC- FMUSP, complaining of neck and/or cervical pain and with myofascial trigger point in the head, neck and/or shoulder. They were submitted to a complete otolaryngologist evaluation which included history, physical examination and myofascial trigger point checkup. Patients also performed blood tests, tonal and vocal audiometry, and psychoacoustic tinnitus measures. Self paring study, double blind placebo controlled. Each patient will be subjected to the dry needling placebo, 4 sessions, 1 per week, with placebo stretching, followed by washout period of two weeks, and 4 more dry needling therapeutic sessions and active stretching. On the first day of the study will be conducted the following evaluation: questionnaires THI and NDI, quantification of cervical pain and tinnitus through the Visual analogue scale (VAS), search and confirmation of the presence of PGM and cervical pain, psychoacoustic measures and somatic tests. This evaluation will be repeated at the end of the four placebo sessions, at the beginning of therapeutic needling sessions and at the end of the same.

Cardiovascular Autonomic Function and Endogenous Pain Modulation

FibromyalgiaExercise3 more

The study has three aims: To investigate the influence of cardiovascular autonomic function on pain sensitivity at rest in patients with fibromyalgia and age- and sex-matched controls To investigate the influence of cardiovascular autonomic function at baseline and during exercise on the pain response following submaximal isometric exercise To study the relation between the pain response following physical and cognitive tasks (exercise and mental math, respectively).

Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS) in the Treatment of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia

To the investigators knowledge there are no studies of Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS) for fibromyalgia. TNS may modify overlapping mood and fibromyalgia pain regulation circuitry. The investigators hypothesized that patients with fibromyalgia might experience a clinically significant reduction in daily pain if investigators were to administer TNS in a manner similar to experimental antidepressant protocols.

Massage of the Low Back Muscles Assessed With Ultrasound Scanning

Myofascial Pain Syndrome

The aim of the study is to use diagnostic ultrasound to compare the thickness of soft tissues in the low back in a group of patients with chronic low back pain treated with massage to a control group of non-treated patients. It is hypothesized that on average, soft tissue thickness in the lumbar region will change in the group receiving massage compared to the control group.
