As such, the majority of treatment options are directed at attempting to control the chronic inflammation and prolonging remission of clinical symptoms. Several studies have proven that curcumin has well-established anti-inflammatory properties. However, curcumin has poor bioavailability and prior studies have needed to use high concentrations in order to study the efficacy of the product. The investigators propose that a bio-enhanced preparation of curcumin will require a lower dosage to reach and affect its target tissue and will subsequently produce less adverse side effects.

Monitoring Physiologic Data in the Development of Pressure Ulcers
Pressure UlcerSigns and SymptomsHospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs) are a well-established serious complication of hospitalization that have serious consequences on patient morbidity and mortality as well as the cost of care. At the core of the problem for patient-centered targeted prevention of HAPUs is the lack of knowledge surrounding the magnitude and duration of pressure necessary to cause pressure ulcers, and the lack of immediate feedback on whether these interventions do anything to substantially offload at risk areas. Previous studies have been inconsistent in their findings of an association between duration of time and HAPU occurrence. While retrospectively this has been investigated, there is currently no substantial prospective, randomized study. This study seeks to better understand the interface pressures between the patient and his or her support surface and how this relates to the development of pressure ulcers. The effect of patient characteristics and the relationship between total length of time on the operating table and pressure ulcer development will also be assessed. The findings from this study will significantly add to strengthening the body of evidence regarding pressure ulcer development, specifically the relationship between the magnitude of interface pressure between the patient and the support surface for what duration of time leads to the development of a pressure ulcer. The results will provide critical insight into the physiologic targets healthcare providers should use to develop better pressure ulcer prevention programs, which could ultimately lead to a reduction in the incidence of pressure ulcers.
Fecal Microbiota Transplant in the Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative ColitisActive ModerateThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) for treating patients with mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Even with the expanding choices of medication for UC, physicians and patients are still in search of highly effective and safe medications with minimal side effects. FMT has been approved for the treatment of a bacterial infection called Clostridium difficile. In this setting, FMT has been proven to be an effective and safe alternative therapy with zero reported serious adverse events from patients that have had this treatment. The providers that are conducting this study hypothesize that delivering microbes from a healthy human gut can help treat the damages caused by UC. This is done by "transplanting" fecal material, which contains a highly complex and dense community of healthy microbes, including bacteria, fungi and viruses. This collection of microbes is referred to as a microbiome. Preliminary studies suggest that alteration of the microbiome can help treat UC.

Ulcerative ColitisUnspecifiedThe research aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of that mesalazine with hydrocortisone sodium succinate for the induction of clinical remission during a 4-week double-blind treatment period in active UC (define as total Mayo score of greater than or equal to 4 and less than or equal to 10). A total of 528 patients will be randomly divided into three group, one will receive mesalazine 4g with hydrocortisone sodium succinate 100mg enema, and the other two group will respectively to receive mesalazine 4g and hydrocortisone sodium 100mg one times daily for 4 weeks. The end of the study for every patient is the improvement of main symptoms.The primary endpoint is the clinical remission after 2 and 4 weeks double-blind treatment, defined on the basis of a total Mayo score ≤ 2 points, with no subscore > 1 point. The secondary endpoint are endoscopic mucosal healing at week 2 and 4 of double-blind period, defined as an absolute subscore for endoscopy portion of the Mayo score of 0 point and the change from baseline in Quality of Life at week 4 of double-blind period based on the IBDQ.
