Analysis of Retinochoroidal Vasculature in Underweight Women Using Optical Coherence Tomography...

CachexiaUnderweight

Cachectic patients and controls undergoing a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination. The imaging of all subjects is undertaken using a commercial OCTA device with a scan rate of 70,000 A-scans/s, scan beam wavelength of 840 ± 10 nm and bandwidth of 45 nm. All measurements are performed between 10:00 and 12:00 on the same day. The OCTA images are independently graded and assessed by two retinal specialists. The software automatically segmented these full-thickness retinal scans into the superficial and deep inner retinal vascular plexuses, outer retina, and choriocapillaris (CC). The vascular density in the superficial and deep retinal vascular zones is calculated automatically by the software, and the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and foveal density (FD) are also automatically determined. Choroidal thickness is calculated manually by two retinal specialists, and the average value was used.

Genome Study in Constitutional Thinness

ThinnessLeanness

Constitutional thinness (CT) is a recently defined entity as a differential diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN), considered to be the most frequent cause of low body mass index (BMI) in young women. CT subjects present no AN psychiatric traits, preserved menses, no biological signs of undernutrition and balanced energy metabolism despite a Body Mass Index (BMI) <17 kg / m². CT familial aggregation, low body mass without a hormonal explanation, and specific appetite regulation profile suggest a specific genetic profile in these subjects. Objective: A family linkage study in order to identify genes involved in the constitutional thinness phenotype by using genome wide scan (GWAS) techniques Studied population: Fifty families including at least one well phenotyped CT index case (grade 2 or 3 of thinness according WHO classification). Blood or saliva is sampled for DNA extraction. Perspectives: Revealing eventual abnormalities could lead to a more precise diagnosis of constitutional thinness and new hypothesis in understanding extreme bodyweight mechanisms.

Mental Health in Fitness Instructors

Mental Health Wellness 1Depression15 more

The aim of this project is to improve the evidence-base regarding lifestyle and mental health symptoms among fitness instructors. A national cohort of fitness instructors will be invited to participate in this study by responding to an online questionnaire. The questionnaire will consist of items regarding exercise, nutrition, eating disorders, the menstrual cycle, depression, anxiety, body dissatisfaction and satisfaction, drive for muscularity and leanness, and experiences of sexual harassment. Findings from this study will provide an evidence-base for initiatives to improve/optimize mental health among fitness instructors, and also in the process of developing fitness centres to a core partner in public health and health promotion work.

Adaptation of Lipid and Energy Metabolism During a Lipid Overnutrition in Constitutional Thinness...

Lipid OvernutritionConstitutional Thinness

For a given food intake, fat and energy metabolism in adipose tissue and muscle adapt to nutrient intakes. This adaptation to nutrition may be impaired in susceptible individuals or in obese patients by promoting weight gain, either in constitutional thinness (MC) by blocking it. The MC is a little known entity. These patients wish to grow for her and others. Can they? We have demonstrated abnormalities of hormones regulating appetite (ghrelin, PYY, GLP1 and leptin) that may participate in thinness. Furthermore, this thinness is associated with osteoporosis in 25% of true MC who is 25 years old.

Nutritional Therapy on Underweight Critically Ill Patients: an Observational Study

UnderweightCritical Illness

Critically ill patients with body mass index (BMI) inferior to 20 kg/m2 have worse outcomes compared to normal and overweight patients. The impact nutrition therapy in this population is not yet stablished. There is a concern that too low caloric intake might worse their malnutrition; on the other hand, overfeeding is always a risk with serious consequences. The hypothesis of this study is that nutritional support, especially caloric and protein intake, can influence the outcome of underweight critically ill patients.
