Defining and Treating Depression-related Asthma

AsthmaDepression1 more

Depression is seen more often in people with asthma, and may lead to increased development and severity of asthma. This study will investigate whether children with depression and asthma have less allergic disease and less inflammation than children with asthma who do not have symptoms of depression. The study will also investigate whether the lungs of children with depression and asthma respond to an anticholinergic inhaler called ipratropium more than the lungs of non-depressed asthmatic children.

SSIPP vs. PST vs. WLC

Major Depressive DisorderLate Life Depression

The COVID-19 pandemic and continued lockdown measures have led to social isolation that is likely disproportionately affecting community-dwelling seniors. This social isolation of seniors is expected to cause detrimental health effects especially in those who have an ongoing or new onset late life depressive episode. The COVID-19 pandemic has also made accessing formal psychotherapy services increasingly difficult due to an increased demand for these services and a limited number of trained professionals available to deliver these interventions. We plan to conduct an open label, pilot, randomized controlled trial (RCT), comparing a virtually delivered (telephone) student led mental health supportive initiative, Student Senior Isolation Prevention Partnership (SSIPP) (n=15) compared to a telephone delivered standard psychotherapy intervention, problem-solving therapy (PST) (n=15) versus a wait list control (n=15) in community-dwelling seniors suffering from late life depression. Participants in this study will be blinded to the hypothesis, while those performing data analysis will be blinded to treatment allocation. Both SSIPP and PST will be delivered via telephone as a weekly session for 12-weeks. Feasibility measures of recruitment, retention and costs will be collected as primary outcome measures. Self-rated measures of depression, anxiety, isolation and resilience will comprise secondary exploratory outcomes. We anticipate that it will be feasible to conduct an RCT of these telephone interventions, SSIPP and PST, in socially isolated community-dwelling seniors. Data from this study will be critical to plan a subsequent confirmatory large-scale RCT. It could be that telephone delivered medical student led supportive intervention, SSIPP and/or a telephone delivered psychotherapy initiative, PST, can be feasibly applied in the current pandemic to a high-risk population, isolated seniors suffering from depression.

Creatine Augmentation in Veterans With SSRI-Resistant Major Depression

Major Depressive Disorder

The purpose of this study is to determine whether creatine will be helpful as an adjunctive treatment for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD) in female and male Veterans. We hypothesize that Veterans receiving creatine will show decreased depressive symptoms as measured by the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). We will also use 31-Phosphorus Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (31-P MRS) brain scans to compare levels of neurochemicals related to energy metabolism in the brain, before-and-after treatment with creatine, and between healthy controls and MDD participants.

Effect of a Telephone-based Intervention on Postnatal Depression

Postnatal Depression

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of a telephone-based intervention using cognitive-behavioral approach in preventing postnatal depression and improving quality of life in first-time Chinese mothers. Hypothesis: Women who receive the telephone-based cognitive-behavioral intervention will have a lower level of depressive symptoms (primary outcome) and a higher level of quality of life at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum than those who receive the usual postpartum care. Design and subjects: Randomized controlled trial is used. A sample of postpartum women with high risk of postnatal depression (EPDS > 9, n = 498) will be randomly assigned to either the experimental (n = 249) or the control groups (n = 249). The experimental group receives the intervention and the control group receives usual postpartum care. Study instruments: EPDS and Medical Outcomes Study Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). Interventions: The intervention is based on the cognitive-behavioral approach. It consists of five, 30-minutes sessions delivered weekly from postpartum week one to week five via telephone. Main outcome measures and analysis: Outcomes on postnatal depression and quality of life will be measured by EPDS and SF-12, respectively, at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. A repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance will be used to compare differences between two groups.

Serotonin Transporter Density in Late-life Depression With and Without Dementia

Melancholia

This study will recruit a total of 40 evaluable subjects (20 cognitively depressive, and 20 AD depressive); each evaluable subject involved in this study must fulfill all the inclusion and exclusion criteria according the subject grouping. Safety measurement will be evaluated by medical history, vital signs, physical examinations, laboratory examinations and collecting of adverse events. This study is expected to be completed in a period of 3 years.

The Effect of Fish Oil in Major Depressive Disorder

Major Depressive Disorder

The whole study was divided into two major parts: (A) the 12-week, double-blind, randomized controlled, parallel omega-3 fatty acid monotherapy study in 60 patients with mild to moderate major depressive disorder. (B) The double-blind, randomized controlled, parallel omega-3 fatty acid add-on prevention study in 60 patients with major depressive disorder in recovery status. The goals of this study were to examine the therapeutic and recurrence prevention effects of omega-3 fatty acids on major depressive disorder.
