The worldwide prevalence of anxiety and depression increased massively during the pandemic, with a 25% rise in the number of patients suffering from psychological distress. Psychiatrists, and even more so general practitioners, need measurement tools that enable them to remotely monitor their patients' psychological state of health, and to be automatically alerted in the event of a break in behavior. In this study, the investigators propose to collect clinical data along with longitudinal measurement of patients' emotions. Emobot proposes to analyze the evolution of mood disorders over time by passively studying people's emotional behavior. The aim of EMOACQ-1 is to acquire knowledge and produce a quantitative link between emotional expression and mood disorders, ultimately facilitating the understanding and management of these disorders. Through this study, could be developed a technological solution to support healthcare professionals and patients in psychiatry, a field known as the "poor relation of medicine" and lacking in resources. Such a solution would enable better understanding, disorders remote & continuous monitoring and, ultimately, better treatment of these disorders. The investigators will process the data by carrying out a number of analyses, including descriptive, comparative and correlation studies of the data from the self-questionnaire results and the emotional signals captured by the devices. Finally, the aim will be to predict questionnaire scores from the emotional signals produced.

Blending Two Worlds: Traditional Aboriginal Healing Strategies for Depression and Anxiety

Purpose Provide a culturally sensitive and supportive treatment environment for children, youth and families in the aboriginal community experiencing stress, anxiety and depression. Gain insight into understanding of the role of Traditional Healing options provided by Aboriginal Healers and Helpers in the management of stress, anxiety and depression. Encourage Aboriginal and First Nation clients to seek treatment earlier from a culturally supportive system. Hypothesis This will be a descriptive hypothesis generating research project, however it is anticipated that members of the Aboriginal community experiencing stress, anxiety and depression may experience improved care and outcomes if their treatment includes traditional healing methods. A number of measures of subject and treatment characteristics, stress, anxiety and depression will provide the foundation for triangulation of outcomes in order to describe the impact of the various treatment options (standard care, Traditional Healing, combined standard care and Traditional Healing).

A Health Intervention to Prevent Depression Hepatitis C Patients

Interferon-alpha (IFN-α) is an efficacious treatment for Hepatitis C (HPC); however, IFN-α treatment results in a significant increase in depressive symptoms. The aim of this project is to compare two health interventions (exercise vs. health education) to prevent depression in HPC patients receiving IFN-α. Participants will be recruited from the Clinical Center for Liver Diseases at UT-Southwestern and randomized to 26 weeks of either: aerobic exercise or a health education control group.

Characterizing Dopamine Receptor Binding in Treatment Resistant Depression

Treatment Resistant Depression

It is estimated that 30% of individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) fail to respond to conventional antidepressant medication which accounts for over 1 million Canadians in their lifetime. Treatment resistant depression (TRD) patients also have greater psychiatric and medical comorbidity, poorer quality of life and increased suicidal ideation. Yet, there are few treatment strategies available to target TRD and there is a significant lack of evidence about how TRD differs from treatment-responsive depression. This proposal represents the first study to elucidate the neurobiology of TRD with a focus on dopamine receptor function throughout the brain, in order to inform treatment development and clinical characterization of TRD.The ultimate goal of this unique study is to characterize striatal and extrastriatal dopamine D2 and D3 receptor binding potential in patients with TRD, non-resistant MDD and healthy controls. The primary hypothesis is that TRD patients will exhibit greater D2/D3 receptor binding potential compared to non-TRD patients in the following regions of interest: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, and ventral striatum. Secondarily, non-TRD patients will also demonstrate increased binding potential compared to healthy controls in the same brain regions. Whole brain analyses will allow us to take an exploratory approach to other brain regions that may differentiate TRD from non-TRD patients. Participants will be assessed at St. Michael's Hospital (SMH) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), which are within a 10 minute driving distance of each other. There will be 3 study visits following written informed consent. Eligibility will be confirmed at a screening visit at SMH where demographic information, including age, sex, education, and medication history will be obtained, as well as the administration of a structured Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) Axis I diagnoses (Sheehan et al, 2015), and an HRSD-17. Within two weeks of the screening visit, participants will undergo a structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan at SMH prior to the positron-emission tomography (PET) scan at CAMH. The order of the PHNO scans will be counterbalanced.

Most psychiatric research is based on the nosographic classifications used in current practice. At present, there is no diagnostic or prognostic biomarker for psychiatric pathologies commonly used in clinical practice. The study hypothesis is that peripheral inflammatory biomarkers could be common to several psychiatric disorders, in particular psychotic disorders (bipolar disorder, schizophreniform disorder, schizophrenia, depressive episode with psychotic features). The aim of this project is to set up a bio-collection of biological samples (peripheral blood samples) with associated phenotypic data (assessment of various symptoms using standardized scales in patients whose blood is sampled). The setting up of this cohort follows on from work carried out on a PsyCourse cohort also using a transdiagnostic approach in psychiatry, in order to be able to collaborate within a European research project.

Depressive disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders. However, this disorder is multifaceted, as are its etiological factors, and is not yet fully understood. Within the framework of the P4D study, 1000 patients with depression will be comprehensively examined. In addition to the recording of psychological factors by means of questionnaires and third-party assessments, imaging and electrophysiological procedures (functional and structural MRI, EEG) are used to assess brain structure and function. In addition, blood is drawn from the subjects to analyze these samples for various biological markers (e.g., genetics). Drug level measurements are also performed. The goal is to perform an in-depth characterization (phenotyping) of individuals with a depressive disorder. These findings could be used to individualize and improve therapy for depressive disorders.
