fMRI Study of Treatment Changes in Major Depression

Major DepressionTreatment

The overall purposes of this research are to determine if Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has the same healing effect on the brain for people with depression as traditional antidepressants do, and in comparison to healthy controls with no history of depression, to find out more about the causes of depression including differences in the extent of problems caused by depression. We hypothesize that CBT will have the same healing effect on the brain as antidepressants; that differences in brain activations created by the various tasks and genetic differences will help us understand differences in the type and severity of symptoms among the depressed subjects.

Teen Depression Awareness Project (TDAP)

Depression

The main objective of this research project is to describe the impact of depression on adolescent and family functioning compared to that of healthy adolescents and to understand the impact of Feedback and Patient Activation (FPA) on teen and family decision-making regarding seeking care for depressive disorders.

The Effect of an Exercise Program in Reducing the Severity of Postpartum Depression in Women

DepressionPostpartum

Aim: This study aims to identify the effectiveness of an exercise program in reducing the severity of postnatal depression in women who had a spontaneous vaginal delivery. Methods: This randomized control trial was conducted with 65 postpartum women residing in a city located in the south-eastern Turkey. In the first postpartum month, following random assignment of subjects, the experimental group (n=40) performed exercises for four weeks, and the control group (n=40) received standard cares. The participating women were administered the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale.

CHS Nurses Clinical Competence in Detecting Signs of PPD in Non-Native Speaking Immigrant Mothers'...

DepressionPostpartum

The aim is to develop, test and evaluate an educational intervention with the purpose to strengthen Child Health Services (CHS) Nurses clinical competence in detecting signs of postpartum depression in non-native-speaking immigrant mothers. The pilot study has a pre-post experimental design. Data are collected before and after the intervention. The differences in the values of the collected data are used to estimate the effect of the intervention.

Augmentation of Depression Treatment by Gamified Network Retraining

Depression MildCognitive Impairment3 more

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent and debilitating mental disorder with a high lifetime prevalence of 16-20%. Particularly for people with low socio-economic status, the existing and effective treatment options are hard to reach and show weaker effectivities. There is a potential to ameliorate depressive symptoms and improve quality of life in persons with mild-to-moderate depression by providing access to stimulating computerized trainings. Single computerized trainings that target depressive symptoms have been tested in laboratory and clinical settings so far. To date, innovative market access and confirmatory studies are missing for a large-scale implementation of such trainings. Thereby, the present work will foster a digitalized training paradigm (Paced-Auditory Serial Addition Task; PASAT) which was previously shown to reduce depressive symptoms, but in a novel innovative and gamified form on a tablet-PC handed out to participants. Different versions of the same training paradigm that comprise additional game elements will be compared. The feasibility study will gather data on effect size estimates of symptom severity reduction, user experience and usage in an ecological valid setting.

Virtual Reality Effect in Geriatric Individuals

PainDepression

This study aimed to determine the effect of a virtual reality experience on pain, depression and functional adequacy in geriatric individuals living in a nursing home. A virtual reality video with dance moves has been applied to the experimental group participants. Each video takes 3 minutes, and the elderly person has been put into practice at least 30 minutes after having breakfast in 3-minute periods and at least 30 minutes after dinner. In the morning and evening, 15 minutes, 2 times a day, a total of 9 days were applied for 3 weeks. The application lasted a total of 3 weeks. Scales were applied 1 week after the virtual reality application was completed and 1 month after the experimental group. The scales were filled in the control group at the same time.

Gut Feeling: Understanding the Mechanisms Underlying the Antidepressant Properties of Probiotics...

Major Depressive Disorder

Previous research has suggested that probiotics can improve depressive symptoms in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), particularly when used in addition to antidepressants. The aim of this exploratory pilot study is to improve the investigator's understanding of the mechanisms underlying these effects. This study will assess the effects of an 8-week double-blind placebo-controlled probiotic intervention on the gut microbiome, inflammatory marker levels, brain activity and neurotransmitter levels in patients with MDD and their relationship to changes in mood. This study will also recruit a group of demographically-matched healthy controls for gut microbiome comparison with the MDD group (non-interventional).

Theta Burst Stimulation in Young Adults With Depression

Depression

For the proposed 2-year study, the investigators will conduct a within-subject, counterbalanced investigation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to examine the acute effects of theta-burst stimulation (TBS) on function in dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) in 35 young adults with depression (18-25 years, 50% female).
